Fine for Spying, How about 100 Million?
If it's good enough for motor racing it's got to be good enough for the NFL.
McLaren fined $100M in spying scandal
By ROB MURRAY, AP Sports Writer
PARIS - The McLaren team was fined $100 million and stripped of its points in the constructors' standings Thursday in the spying scandal that has rocked the sport.
McLaren F1 team chief Ron Dennis is surrounded by journalists as he leaves the Automobile International Federation (FIA) headquarters, in Paris, Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007. McLaren, which leads the current drivers' and constructors' standings, was punished by the World Motor Sports Council for allegedly using leaked secret technical documents belonging to F1 rival Ferrari.
Team drivers Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, currently 1-2 in the championship standings, were not punished and can continue to compete for the season title.
"Ferrari is satisfied that the truth has now emerged," the Italian team said in a statement.
The $100 million penalty includes McLaren's expected loss of income, and McLaren still could be penalized for the 2008 championship, FIA said in a statement after a hearing.
"We have never denied that the information from Ferrari was in the personal possession of one of our employees at his home," McLaren team chief Ron Dennis said. "The issue is: was this information used by McLaren? This is not the case and has not been proven today."
McLaren escaped the harshest possible penalty, as FIA could have kicked the team and its drivers out of the 2007 and 2008 championships. In December, FIA will decide on any possible sanctions against McLaren for the 2008 season.
FIA said it did not penalize McLaren's drivers "due to exceptional circumstances" because they provided evidence in exchange for immunity.

Money means nothing to these NFL teams. I think a better punishment
would be a four game suspension of Bill Belichick with absolutely no
contact with the Patriots allowed during this time.

Well, McLaren have a 500m budget and in Vodafone and Mercedes they have sponsors with very, very deep pockets.

Just to put some things in prospective for anyone who knows nothing about F1:
The 11 F1 teams annual budget range from just over $50m to about $500m.
McLaren, which is one of the top team annual budget for 2007 is estimated (by me) at just over $400m.
The Construction championship is the 2nd most important title in F1.
First 8 drivers, in each race, receive points based on their finish (10,8,6,5,4,3,2,1) and the same amount of points is awarded towards the construction standings.
McLaren is leading both construction standing (166 to 143 over Ferrari) and driversí championship (Hamilton, McLaren 92 / Alonso, McLaren 89 / Raikkonen, Ferrari 74 / Massa, Ferrari 69).
There are only 4 races left in the 2007 season (out of 17)
Huge fines, grid position penalties, suspensions and points deduction are very common in F1, and usually we have at least one big story every season.
This year McLaren were already punished once (unrelated incident) and 15 construction points were deducted.
For most fans, we donít care, too much, about construction championship. Itís all about the driversí.

The patriots (organization, coaches & players) should be banned from any post season appearances and consideration from league performance award consideration. This should be the minimum penalty.

I think they should take away Marcia's place in the Supermodel line. Instead of being after Leonardo Dicapro Marica sould be placed after me.
