I can't find the darned thread ... but guys were having an animated argument Mike Bell vs. Marion Barber last week. Well, the jury is in, after Sunday Night Football ran the following 2006 stat tonight:
Quote:
Whoever was arguing for Marion Barber can be forgiven - like the rest of the world - for having stars in their eyes when they see that Cowboys helmet. Always remember - as a general rule: BRONCO RB > OTHER RBs ![]() Last edited by BroncoBuff; 09-10-2007 at 03:46 AM.. |

Mike Bell has been switched to fullback and lost his backup job to an undrafted rookie.
'nuff said. |

I'd take Barber in a hot minute over Mike Bell.

Yeah but did you watch the game? I'd take Barber over Bell in a heartbeat. He''d be a TD machine on our team.

Drawing conclusions from small sample sizes is rarely a good idea. Steven Jackson was only one for seven on goal line carries from the one yard line last year.

I'll tell you this much about Dallas. The Cowboys are going to get flat out destroyed by any decent passing attack with a couple undersized linebackers like Roy Williams and Ken Hamlin playing together at the safety spots. Neither one of these guys could cover a baby with a blanket.
Wade Phillips was able to sort of get away with a Steve Atwater/Dennis Smith safety tandem during his tenure in Denver, but those guys were both All Pros and savvy veterans. Also, the rule enforcement back then allowed you to hide weak cover men a little more easily. It's not going to work like that for Wade in Dallas. They'll obviously fare better when Terence Newman returns at cornerback, but he and Anthony Henry better get used to late arriving help all season long. |

When the Broncos took Maurice Clarett over Marion Barber III, I was absolutely stunned. The kid was a perfect fit for this system, and had the potential to possibly be a franchise back here. Dallas got a steal with him.

The stats from last year ... especially with this added stat, would seem to favor Bell, AZ.
And Slap is right about small sample sizes. I think Barber was 10/20 (50%) on <2 yards 3rd & 4th downs. "Last in the League" sounds pretty bad ... but at minimum 10 attempts to qualify for the ranking, I wonder just how many backs are ranked there. |

I certainly understand the rush to make your MSJ, counsel (motion for summary judgment), but we have a bit more discovery to do before the bench rules. Ruling continued .... |

Barber played with the 4th highest scoring offense in the league and they were 5th in total offense...TO...Glenn...Witten...Bell got to play with Jake Plummer and a team with 1 1/2 receivers and no tight ends. Add to that the fact that he was a rookie, so your stat for stat comparison doesn't quite work. |

What about the FACT that Mike Bell is even lucky to be on the team and is a ST's player where Barber is going to cause a controversy in Dallas soon. How do you explain that? Obviously Shanny doesn't think as highly about Mike Bell as you do. |

As for him playing special teams, what does that prove? Shanny thinks he looks better at fullback?...he thought so about Mike Anderson and Reuben Droughns too. |

No...that was last year when we had holes in the O-line and Jake playing QB who couldn't keep defenses honest. Barber's career average is 4.4 ypc...Tatum's is 4.9. In 2004 Barber got a measley 3.9 ypc and also fumbled 3 times himself...Tatum had a 5.3 ypc. the same year. Bell was also obviously playing in a system here that didn't suit his talents. It remains to be seen whether he's better in Detroit but both these guys have been largely change of pace backs and Bell's been more productive than Barber on balance.
