Bailey and Bly ready for Debut
THE GRAND OPENING: Broncos fans have been giddy with anticipation all throughout the offseason, training camp and preseason at the thought of Champ Bailey and Dre' Bly, two of the top cornerbacks in the league, taking the field together in a meaningful game.
And with Sunday's opener against the Bills looming, the waiting will soon be over.
But while the fans may be excited, Bly said that he and Bailey were collected and confident going into the season.
"Something that we've been working on all offseason is being out there together, but Champ and I have been in this league for eight years, going on our ninth. We're pretty familiar with each other. Both have made a lot of plays. It's no big deal for us, it's just another regular game for us," Bly said. "No matter if he's out there or not, I'm looking to go out there and do my best and to try to help this team win and make as many plays as I can, and I'm sure Champ is going to try to do the same regardless that I'm here. Champ, myself and the other guys that we have, we'll feed off each other. We'll raise the level of play. Hopefully we'll get off to a fast start and we'll start doing well from the beginning."
Bailey said he and Bly have not paid much attention to all the hype that has been surrounding the two corners.
"At this point, we've been doing this for a while," Bailey said. "We've got a great veteran group. We know what's expected. I'm sure we could've probably played no preseason games and went out there and did a good job."
Bly also stressed that even more important than the duo's first game together was the defense's performance as a unit.
"We're going to keep working on what we struggled with in preseason just trying to solidify things on defense, execute and do what we do. The thing for us defensively, we want to keep getting off the field on third downs, just try to make as many plays as we possibly can," Bly said. "They have a very explosive offensive unit with Lee Evans and (J.P.) Losman, guys that can make big plays for them, and we just have to buckle down and keep doing what we've been doing."
But if one of the two elite corners does come up with an interception in Sunday's game, Bailey said that the two may have a special celebration up their sleeves.
"Yeah, you never know. But you've got to be careful," Bailey said during training camp. "They'll fine you for anything. If they throw a flag, we don't need that, but we'll do something within the rules."
