Broncos' Henry not thinking revenge
Tailback returns to Buffalo after 3 years By FRANK SCHWAB THE GAZETTE ENGLEWOOD - At one point Travis Henry was upset with the Buffalo Bills, shocked that he was removed as starter after consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. That was three years ago. Things change fast in the NFL. The general manager when Henry was in Buffalo, Tom Donahoe, was fired in 2006. The Bills have a different coach since Henry left, Dick Jauron. Even Willis McGahee, the running back who caused so much angst to Henry, is gone to the Baltimore Ravens. Henry has also moved on, first to Tennessee and this year to the Denver Broncos. So when Henry goes back to Buffalo on Sunday as the Broncos’ tailback, he said revenge won’t be on his mind. “Everybody’s new, so who could I grudge against if I wanted to grudge?” Henry said. In 2004, Henry was coming off two big seasons for Buffalo. He had 2,794 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2002-03. But Buffalo drafted McGahee in the first round in 2003, even though Henry was only 24 and was fifth in the NFL in rushing the previous season. In 2004, McGahee was healthy after missing his rookie year with a knee injury. Henry’s playing time dwindled as the season went on and he lost his starting job before the season was over. Henry demanded a trade, and was sent to Tennessee the following offseason. Henry had 1,211 yards with Tennessee last year, and Denver signed him this offseason. Henry hurt his knee in Denver’s second preseason game, but said he is back to full speed. He was not limited at practice or mentioned on the Broncos’ injury report Wednesday or Thursday. “I’m feeling good,” Henry said. “I’m healthy and I’m ready to go. I’m fresh. I’m just really excited.” Henry said last year he wanted to show Buffalo what it was missing, when Tennessee played at the Bills. Henry had 135 yards and the Titans won 30-29. McGahee had 95 yards. Leading up to another game at Buffalo, Henry said he has moved on. He said the events with the Bills taught him a lesson about the business of the NFL. “What has been done has been done and you’ve got to go on with your career,” Henry said. Broncos safety Nick Ferguson isn’t so convinced old feelings go away so easily. “You’ve got some guys who played in Buffalo and they can go back and say ‘You passed on me, and I have something left in the tank,’” Ferguson said. Broncos defensive tackle Sam Adams also used to play for the Bills. Henry doesn’t have to worry about anyone taking carries away from him this year. The Broncos are going to feature him as long as he’s healthy. When Henry was signed, he said he wanted to put up numbers like Terrell Davis. “It feels good to be a Bronco,” Henry said. “I’m excited about this first game.” http://www.gazette.com/sports/henry_...o_broncos.html |
