Default Broncos' Bell stunned by move to fullback

Denver player appreciative still on team, though
By FRANK SCHWAB, THE GAZETTE

ENGLEWOOD – After carefully measuring his words and giving short answers about a move from tailback to fullback, Mike Bell admitted he didn’t know quite what to say.

“This is all new to me right now, man,” said Bell, who had 677 yards as a rookie tailback for the Denver Broncos last year. “I’m sorry I’m not like the happiest camper right now. But I’ve been pretty appreciative I’m still playing. But you have to take it one day at a time and adjust. This is a big time adjustment for me, because I’ve been playing tailback my whole life.

“So I’m not going to be jumping for joy, but then again, you got to be appreciative I’m still playing football.”

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said earlier this week that Bell probably wasn’t excited about moving to fullback.

Bell admitted he was shocked initially at the move but has tried to get used to it. He was moved to fullback before Denver’s final preseason game.

“I was shocked but I’m trying to learn you can’t be shocked with things that happen, because it’s a business,” Bell said. “You got to be aware and expect the unexpected.”

Bell said he will stay at 220 pounds, because he didn’t want to lose any speed or quickness. He said he didn’t know if he’d ever get the chance to move back to tailback, saying it was up to the coaches.

“I’m just taking it one day at a time, man,” Bell said.

Someone on the board has inside information regarding Mike's attitude and approach to the game of football before he joined the Broncos.

If that person wishes to PM me some private info, I will be glad to post it anonymously ...

He just needs to go w/it. Suck it up and play. Be happy to be able to play this great game at such a high level and get paid. Also, look at guys that have play FB/RB in recent year. Mike Anderson, Rheuben, and Cecil all have, so do you think they're mad? 2 of them had pretty good success when called apon too.

I can't blame him. I'd probably be more inclined to say he should suck it up if I felt he would be better at playing fullback, but I honestly can't see him being a very good fullback in this league. While he can probably be a fairly productive tailback, if not a featured one. But, if he learns to block well playing full back (this wasn't exactly a strength of his last year), it'll help him down the road as tailbacks have to pick up blitzes. Hopefully he's taking that approach.

He might as well be a paid fan who gets extra special locker room access. Hopefully he will get a shot somewhere else sometime in the future.

He keeps talking like that though and his next move will be out the door, regardless. The disgruntled and Shanahan do not last long together and we all know what the result is when things like this happen.

I don't understand this move by Mike. I don't see the Broncos using much 2 back formations this year and when they do , I think Sapp will be the primary FB>

Voicing displeasure with a Shanahan move....any Shanahan move....is not a very smart thing to do when you play for the Man.

That's all I said.....read into it whatever you wish.

I remember reading last year, that one of Shanny's complaits about Bell was that he needed to get his emotions under control. This would fall into line with that.

Really, I am shocked that he is the number 2 fulback.

I wonder if he was equally shocked last year at 1st and goal 4 times with two field goals as our outcome in the 49er game when we missed the play-offs. The dude is average at best, he needs to get over it and find a way to contribute to the team or go somewhere else.

This move is like moving Deltha O'Neal to WR. Wrong from the start.

Maybe playing better would have helped his position?

So what was he supposed to say? He admitted he was struggling to adjust and said he was dealing with it and appreciated playing regaurdless of the move. I don't see the problem.

How do you want him to play better? He is was the #2 rookie rusher last year, supposedly did everything they asked him to do at camp? and it appears that his only fault was getting hurt at camp this year. According to Wabbit he is well liked by his teammates, coaches and the press. So how do you want him to play better

The only thing he failed to do is live up the unrealistic expectations some on this board place on him last preseason. Which are very much like the posts praising Young this year.

All i know is mike demotes playes for poor play iam pretty sure he doesn't demote players for the fun of it, i will bet it may be a ploy to motive him to raise the stick because cutlers pass game will be based on the success of the run game.

He would only be better this year... I am still rooting for him.

However, he is like Henry (but not as powerful)

Young, is faster so as a change of pace back -- do you want a lesser clone of Henry, or do you want a guy who's different style will create problems for teh opposing defences?

Mike Bell needs to focus on longevity. You have a chance of getting on the field if you are on the team. The NFL is not a given. There are some really good players sitting at home waiting for phone calls because they deserve to be in the league.

He needs to be quiet and pay his dues.

He has a lot of great basic skills and a great sales pitch. If you want to continue wearing TD's jersey you need to put on TD's attitude. TD was a bite of a bruiser. Mike Bell won't take the pounding at RB UNLESS he bulks up FB.

Mike Bell is getting a do over. Bell needs to work on getting involved in Special Teams. He needs to build upper body strength, powerful legs and stamina. He needs to stay with the Broncos because that is what he SAID he wanted.

I'd like to see Mike Bell stick around but NFL has no shelf life. Get it done or git!

I want a guy that hits the holes and moves the chains. It isn't like we see a lot of different style of runners out of this team. It choice the hole and go down hill. See the failure of Tatum Bell and Q for different style of back and what Turner had them doing.

And if I remember correct for a past news interview, Shanahan admitted that they only use 6 to 8 run plays during game. The only the things that changes is the formation the team use to excute those plays.

Selvin Young better be all he's cracked up to be and he better not get hurt. If there's one thing I'm sure of, it's that he won't be offered the chance to move to fullback if he slips off his pedestal.

I understand what you're saying, because Shanahan believes you need to show it pratice before you show it on Sunday. And I'm sure Young is performing at practice- hopefully it because he good and not because of our rush defense suck.

I am just annoyed all the posters' whining that Mike Bell suck and isn't a team player. The kid doing nothing wrong but have a hot rookie outplay him when he was injuried. We got rid the of the Bell that was the problem.
