Default Moss, Crowder won't be rushed, Losman to Champ: Bring it on

By Mike Klis
Denver Post Staff Writer

It's clear, through the Broncos' acquisition of Simeon Rice, rookie defensive ends Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder aren't going to dominate right away.

Which NFL rookie does, anymore? Mario Williams was the No. 1 overall draft pick last year, and the Houston defensive end didn't get his first sack until his fourth game. Moss was the 17th overall pick this year, but a preseason knee injury set him back at least a week. Crowder was the Broncos' second-round pick, but a badly sprained ankle suffered three weeks ago still is bothering him to the point he is iffy for the opener at Buffalo.

The injuries to Moss and Crowder help explain the presence of Rice, who will play Sunday against the Bills.

"It would set anybody back, but especially for a rookie who gets held out for a week or two, it hampers their development during a learning stage," Broncos head defensive coach Jim Bates said.

There was a second element to the Rice signing, though, that wasn't half bad for Moss and Crowder. Rice's contract was limited to one year. By not giving Rice a multiyear contract, the Broncos told Moss and Crowder they remain in their future plans.

Until then, the rookie ends can be brought along without the pressure of producing immediately, which their injuries wouldn't allow.

"I'm sure that had something to do with it," Crowder said. "I think another reason they brought him in was to help me and Jarvis learn from one of the best pass rushers of all time."

What does Rice know about Moss and Crowder?

"I'm still in the learning process," Rice said. "I'm not one of those guys who pays attention to football when I'm not playing. I'm not a big fan. I don't watch 'SportsCenter.' I don't watch games."

Rice ready for work

Rice's first day with the Broncos was all business. Long after the team's workout was finished Wednesday, he stayed to run several wind sprints. Coach Mike Shanahan said Rice would be in for 15 to 20 plays against Buffalo. One more sack would jump Rice past Clyde Simmons into 12th place on the all-time sack list.

Elvis Dumervil remains the starter.

"That's the plan, unless there's a game-time decision I don't know about," Dumervil said.

Bring it on, Champ

Bills quarterback J.P. Losman was asked by the Buffalo media Wednesday how much impact he felt Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey would have on the Bills' game plan, which ordinarily features wide receiver Lee Evans.

"Not much," Losman said. "If they want to play one on one with (Evans), we are going to take our chances. It's our best receiver versus their best corner."

Modest Myers

Chris Myers has been waiting two years for his first NFL start. Now that it's here, Myers is making sure he's not getting carried away. He knows his opportunity to start at left guard Sunday occurred because of Ben Hamilton's concussion injury. And Myers has no illusions about replacing Hamilton full time.

"It's unfortunate what happened to Ben," Myers said. "I'm sure once Ben gets healthy, he'll have his spot back, and I'm trying to fill it for the time being. I think having Matt Lepsis on my left side, and Tom Nalen on my right, those are two of the best in the game, so that makes it that much more comfortable for me going into the game."

Footnotes

Nate Jackson appears to be ahead of Tony Scheffler this week at the Broncos' "receiving" tight end. Scheffler continues to heal from the broken foot he suffered in May. "Those two are in good competition," Shanahan said. ...

Sam Adams was held out of practice Wednesday, but Shanahan said the defensive tackle would be on the field today. This could be Adams' practice program throughout the season. ...

Offensive tackle Adam Meadows returned to practice for the first time since straining his calf three weeks ago in Dallas. ...

Backup "blocking" tight end Stephen Alexander practiced on a limited basis. ...

The Broncos worked out offensive linemen Ben Archibald, Brian Johnson, Norm Katnik and Brandon Torrey.

He didn't really say "Bring it on", but that was a great update. Thanks.

Funny stuff. Was Champ covering Fitzgerald or Boldin in that game? Because i believe he got one pick on a ball thrown to his guy and the other one came off a ball thrown to someone elses man. That's why i love Champ. yeah, he could totally dominate his guy and make plays when his guy is involved, but he is like a third safety who also shuts his guy down. Always scanning the field. Last year felt like such a waste to have a guy like that and a defensive line like ours. Well, if we can get the pressure this year he is going to look even more amazing. Go Champ.

JP, I would ditch the false-confidence act right now and just admit that the sight of #24 makes you want to wet yourself. Leinart is ten times the quarterback you will ever be and Fitz or Boldin >>> Lee Evans.

Burn him down Champ. Heres to a multiple pick game. Wrong thing to do. Champ needs no extra incentive. He brings it all , every sunday. I hope he shows JP the ball after he takes one back to the house.

No, maybe they shouldn't. Someone should print and post that up next to Champ's locker for him to see

Losman's posturing. He's not really dumb enough to think that his offensive gameplan won't be altered by Champ Bailey. Look for the #2 and #3 WR's for the Bills to get lots of looks, maybe even check downs to Marshawn this weekend.

In Evans' defense, the guy can flat out fly.

Well in his defense, what's he supposed to say to a leading question like that? "Yeah I'm well aware of the fact that even their #2 guy owned my favorite weapon last year so I'm expecting Evans to get punked by the best in the business...I'll be handing it off all day instead."

Evans success in that offense is completely dependent on the OL pass protection. He was unable to get into his routes consistently until they switched Jason Peters to LT in game eight last season. They added some more talent to the OL in Dockery and Langston, but will they be able to keep the pass rush at bay long enough to free Evans?

Against a complete enigma DL of DEN at this point, no one has a clue how these matchups will compare. If DEN can contain the run with 7 and keep the safeties in cover two man, then I am not worried about their offense at all. However, if the run gets going and the pass rush is as poor as the preseason, then BUF might score some points early and often.

It all depends on if the DL can execute in both phases, which no one, not even them, have a clue at this point. Remember, they failed to execute base defense in the preseason. How the hell can you expect them to execute a gameplan, when they can not play base well enough to stop someone?

According to a Dolphin fan, Bates D looked like this his first preseason down there also but did a 180 once the regular season started. I tried to verify that by going back to check preseason stats but the NFL has deleted them up to the last year or two. I'm more concerned about DJ having trouble defending the middle short zones than I am the pass rush at this point. We looked bad with backs catching the ball in his zone. One thing that will help is that their TE sucks.

Small difference in that transition though. Same terminology, same reads, and only a little technique switch. He already had the talent in place to play his scheme and implemented the same scheme that Wannstedt and Johnson already had in place. The Cowboys defense from the 90's that Jimmy brought over as head coach of MIA. Bates cut his teeth in this scheme in DAL under Wannstedt. Then, he left to join Wannstedt in MIA.

I haven't really kept up with Jason Peters since he turned pro. He was sure fun to watch at Arkansas. 300lbs of fairly nimble tight end... with soft hands. The place would go crazy when the ball went his way.

Champ shut down Chad Johnson and JP couldn't hold Carson's jock if he paid him. Give me a freaking break. I hope Loserman throws at Champ all day.

I hope he does too but in all actuality I hope its once or twice. If its repeated then it means our D-Line and LB corps are playing patty cake with the other line again and getting beat.

Here is to Loserman being on his ass more than Champ being Champ!
