Record crowd sees UW dominate Virginia By AUSTIN WARD Star-Tribune staff writer Sunday, September 02, 2007 LARAMIE -- Call it a unanimous decision. Wyoming coach Joe Glenn compared the season opener to a boxing match -- and the Cowboys completely dominated the bout. UW smacked Virginia early and pulled away late, battering the Cavaliers 23-3 on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium. “If this was a heavyweight fight, we threw the first punch and we threw the last punch,” Glenn said. “We punched throughout the fight. “We just out-played them in every sense of the word.” It certainly helped to have an opening-day record crowd of 31,620 in their corner. Although the Cowboys didn’t seem to need much assistance. UW dominated all phases of the game, never giving the Cavaliers a chance to get up off the mat. “It was just a great effort by Wyoming’s football team, and I’m very proud,” Glenn said. “Our kids fought and fought and battled, and I thought our coaches did a great job with their schemes, offense, defense and special teams.” The defensive schemes were the most effective, as the Cowboys shut down the Virginia offense from the onset. The Cavaliers took nearly four quarters to pick up their 100th yard of offense -- that coming in garbage time with Virginia’s struggling sophomore quarterback Jameel Sewell on the bench -- as the UW defense held Virginia to 110 yards and a lone field goal that came at the end of the first half. Those three points were more a product of solid special teams work by Virginia and conservative play-calling by UW, and for all intents and purposes, the Cowboys were chalking the win up as a shutout. “The defense set the tone,” running back Devin Moore said. “They were put in a couple tough situations, and they answered. “The only thing I was surprised about is that they scored. I’m not trying to be cocky or bad-talk Virginia, but I just believe so much in our defense. It’s so dominant.” So was Moore. The elusive junior finally returned the favor for the defense midway through the fourth quarter, breaking a 49-yard touchdown run that provided more than enough breathing room for the Cowboys and sealed the outcome. “They were keeping them scoreless for a while,” Moore said. “(The touchdown) was a heartfelt moment. “It put them down at the end. We needed it. We needed one more touchdown, and I was fortunately the one to do it.” Moore was the one to close the deal, but it was victory-by-committee for the most part. He and Wynel Seldon combined for 39 carries and 199 yards rushing. Quarterback Karsten Sween completed his 25 passes to nine different receivers en route to a career-high 253 yards. UW had five different players tally tackles for a loss, and preseason All-Mountain West Conference cornerback Julius Stinson picked off Sewell twice. “This was a big, big win for us,” Glenn said. “It would have been a shutout had their punter not been so good. “The Pokes were way too much for the Cavaliers. A Cowboy is tougher than a Cavalier anyway, we all know that.” There were no dissenting votes on Saturday. Notebook DEFENSE RESTS: The Cowboys defense didn’t get much work with the offense on the field for more than 40 minutes. But they made the most of their time on Jonah Field. UW held Virginia to 110 total yards of offense -- the lowest output allowed since South Dakota managed a meager 130 in 1978 -- picking up where it left off as the nation’s ninth-ranked defense last season. The Cavaliers were held to seven yards rushing and Virginia quarterback Jameel Sewell completed 11 of 23 passes for 87 yards with two interceptions and was sacked twice. “We might have surprised some doubters,” sophomore defensive end Mitch Unrein said. “We didn’t surprise ourselves. “We knew we could do it, and we went out and proved it.” Unrein chipped in by picking up his first career sack in the fourth quarter, teaming up with fellow sophomore John Fletcher. PLAYMAKERS, INC.: Wyoming was able to produce just about everything it could have needed. The Cowboys converted 10 of their 20 third downs and generated a pair of big turnovers defensively. Virginia was effective on special teams, somewhat productive on defense -- and completely inept on offense. The Cavaliers were 3-of-13 on third down and looked lost against UW’s dominant defense. “It eventually comes down to the game of playmaking,” Virginia coach Al Groh said. “It was quite apparent that Wyoming did a real good job. “I’m very impressed with their team.” HOME COOKIN’: The fifth-largest crowd in school history -- and the biggest for a season opener -- did its part to reestablish a home field advantage at UW. UW coach Joe Glenn said the fan frenzy and sellout was an important motivator, and the Cowboys sent their supporters home happy. They’re now undefeated in two home meetings against members of the Atlantic Coast Conference -- along with a win over North Carolina State in 1961 -- and they ran their overall record to 4-1 against the league. The lone loss came last year at Virginia. “I think the crowd gave us a lot of motivation, all the support from everyone,” Unrein said. “They all knew we could do it, we knew we could do it, and we went out and did it.” BUMPS AND BRUISES: The game-time decisions both played, and the Cowboys didn’t report any injuries that appear serious. Linebacker Mike Juergens (foot) and tackle Kyle Howard (finger) played through sprains, and the Cowboys added two new sprains in the lidlifter. Tight end Chris Sundberg injured his right knee, and linebacker Weston Johnson hurt his right thumb. Senior wide receiver Hoost Marsh was treated for cramps in the second half, but he returned quickly and was held out of only one punt return. RECORD-SETTERS: Sophomore quarterback Karsten Sween threw for a career-high 253 yards Sophomore Greg Bolling hauled in his first touchdown pass Senior Julius Stinson had the second game with two interceptions of his career Senior Billy Vinnedge made his first career field goal and finished 3-for-4 Senior Hoost Marsh recorded 61 punt return yards, leaving him 201 yards short of the school record. |

I actually like Wyoming a bunch. It is a great place to watch a game. They have great crowds. I went to a game up there in the early 70's. It was about 60 and sunny at the beginning of the game, a blizzard at half time and sunny by the end of the game. The visiting team was just standing there thinking WTF.

Watch out for the MW confrence this year. Between Wyoming, TCU, and BYU beating some OOC teams, they could have some ranked teams early.
