Ok I was just eliminating ideas.

I searched using terms of you problem and found this discussion:

http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic22428.html

Its not exactly what happened with you but may be on the same lines. You might have a short in the USB port and that is shutting down the computer.

Smartass!
Several months ago, scientists at Europe's annual human reproduction conference suggested that the results of a recent analysis revealed the presence of female hormones in beer, and suggested that men should take a look at their beer consumption.

The theory is that drinking beer makes men turn into women.

To test the theory, 100 men were each fed six pints of beer within a one-hour period.

It was then observed that 100 per cent of the men;

- gained weight
- talked excessively without making sense
- became overly emotional
- couldn't drive
- failed to think rationally
- argued over nothing
- had to sit down while urinating
- couldn't perform sexually
- and refused to apologise when wrong.

No further testing is planned.

It's called CMP (computer Printer Blushing)

You said this occured after you downloaded the naughty pictures right?

Did your printer start smoking shortly after?

Sassy no offense, but you really shouldnt be messing with anything. You are not qualified. Call Geek Squad, have them come over and they will get it installed in about 5 minutes. Honestly, you seem like the type that would have trouble turning a computer on if it was off. Just leave it alone and get professional help or take some classes so you understand what you are doing.

I am not trying to be rude here, but installing a printer driver is not hard. Troubleshooting a bad install is not hard. You have made this hard. Call Geek Squad.

So it's the cord or the computer?

Or from what I read...maybe the printer?

I am not messing with anything. I DO KNOW how to install a freakin' printer!
I have done it several times and never had anything like this happen.
All I have to do is follow the directions and that is what I did. Why do guys treat girls as if they are idiots. All I did was ask a few questions.

Why can guys ask computer questions on here and no one ever tells them "call geek squad" "you're not qualified" "take a class" "You don't seem like you know how to turn on a pc " like they're some kind of idiot!

So, yes, Alec. I guess I am offended that I get ragged on for asking questions on here. Besides, aren't you part of the OMane Geek Squad!

Sounds like it could be a short in your USB. I don't know how you would check that without a special multimeter.Do you have a lot of USB devices plugged in?

You might want to try going into Device Manager and checking what it says in the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" drop-down menu.

Assuming you have WIN XP:

Right click on "My Computer" on your desktop and click "Properties". Then click on the "Hardware" tab. Then click on the "Device Manager" button. You'll see a list of hardware, look for "Universal Serial Bus controller". Click on the "+" sign and a list will drop down. Check each item in the list for icons. If an item has a funky icon on it, right click and select "Properties". This will bring you to a menu with several options. Try "Troubleshoot". There will be other options, such as uninstalling and re-installing the driver.

Other than that, can you hook this printer up with a standard printer cable instead?

See, now everything in life is good. Just grab the printer and throw it out the window and never think of it again.

Nah...it's Vista!
No. It does need a USB cable.
I'm going to give it one more shot and then go talk to the guys at Office Max.
My service plan is through them.

Sassy, do you have another computer to try the printer and USB cable? Maybe a friend's computer? You are obviously experiencing some type of short. In order to determine if it's the cable, printer or an issue with your system you will need to try them on a different system.

Obviously if they plug into another system okay then I would suspect an issue with your USB port or motherboard. If the same issue happens on another system then I'd try another cable etc. I've heard of this happening before and I believe it ended up being a problem with the motherboard.

I hope you got a warranty for your new PC.

I do have a printer...but it didn't need the USB cable...maybe I can take the cord in and have them check it for me?

...well, I spent the extra money for a 3 yr.

service plan.

How do I know if it shorted out the motherboard?

If it is under a service plan I would probably run that thing right down to the store and have them deal with it.

You may want to bring the printer and cable with you.

As long as they don't touch your hard drive it should all still be there....

I haven't owned a printer in 6-7 years. Why would I need one, ever? The whole point of web pages for example was so that we didn't have to use paper.

Ahhh, was wondering if you ever tried a different USB port? That one port could be bad, seen that happen before....

In which case, I'd still want it replaced though.

($400 of that the printer.)
