Default US anti-war group ordered to take down Iraq demo posters

Uh, because they are supposedly are using the wrong type adhesive?

US anti-war group ordered to take down Iraq demo posters

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A US anti-war group has been warned it will be fined 10,000 dollars if it does not remove posters in Washington announcing a march in the capital next month against US involvement in Iraq, a spokeswoman said Wednesday.

"The ANSWER Coalition has received citations from the authorities in Washington threatening to fine us 10,000 dollars unless several hundred posters announcing the September 15 march on Washington DC are removed," Sarah Sloan, the staff coordinator for the anti-war group, told AFP.

"We have until Thursday to take down the posters," she said.

Several hundred yellow posters have been put up around Washington announcing the protest, which is timed to coincide with the release of a report by the US military commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, on progress in the US "surge" strategy of raising troop levels.

Washington city authorities said the posters have to come down because they were stuck on with adhesive that did not meet city regulations.

"The charge about adhesives is false," Sloan said.

"This is a definitely a calculated political move aimed at disrupting the demonstration, which has been organised on a day when the world's eyes will be on Washington for the Petraeus report," she said.

Demonstrators from at least 90 cities around the United States and Canada have already pledged to come to Washington for the march, which will be part of a week of anti-war protests led by veterans of the Iraq war, according to Sloan.

A petition calling for the impeachment of President George W. Bush, allegedly carrying one million signatures and endorsed by former US attorney general Ramsey Clark, will also be submitted to officials during the week's activities.

Forget the trial. This isn't the good ole days. Put the bastards in prison NOW!! They should feel lucky if they aren't tortured and executed, as well.

After you throw the leaders of this oufit in prison, get the list of the million people that demanded impeachment and wiretap their phones, track their internet and credit card usage before throwing them in prison too.

What do they think this is, a free country or what?

The administration now has the power to seize all the assets of any anti Iraq war protester as well.

There is no recourse if your assets are seized. It's the same black hole as getting your name removed from the "no fly" list. There simply is no process for seeking redress.

If they are breaking city code by sticking up signs in improper places, or otherwise breaking laws, then this is totally justified. That doesn't mean though that they shouldn't have a forum to assemble in peace.

In a communist state they would probably be jailed for protesting. Isn't it ironic?

In the free country of the U.S. they are allowed to protest (freedom of speech) without threat of jail.....oh wait, never mind.

Ah, okay, Tailgate, I get it: You're calling Garcia a communist because he supports suppressing free speech and dissent through legalistic nitpicking. Just like they used to do, back in the day, in the good ol' USSR.

[whew] So glad I've got that all clear now.

m.

Yep.

As a recipient of a 300+ dollar citation for stapling a flyer on a pole, I have to agree with this.

What if they tacked one up in your yard but it was a pro-war sign? Obvioulsy you would just take it down, but what if it was 100's of people. The laws are in place for a reason. As a PM for CDOT you certainly understand this.

Do you really realize the impact these marches have on the District? The citizens there have to pay for it in the form of security, law enforcement, and clean up.

First of all, no one would put anything in my yard with out my permission, PERIOD.
Second, the issue according to the article is the adhesive not the placement at particular locations. The adhesive Give me a ****ing break! This is a political stunt, if I've ever seen one. We wouldn't want the rest of the world to know the majority of americans can't stand Bush and don't support his ill conceived war!We are not allowed to see the dead soldiers returning from Iraq. We are not allowed to speak out against the war.

When are they going to send out the guys with the Tall Shiny Boots
