Default Chiefs quarterbacks struggle

The stinker wasn’t that Croyle threw an interception in Saturday’s 16-12 preseason loss to the Cleveland Browns. It was the decision Croyle made to heave the pass that will gnaw at Chiefs coaches when they review the tape.

Croyle’s blunder occurred during the Chiefs’ second offensive series. After making a nice spin move to elude defensive end Kamerion Wimbley, Croyle hurled an off-balance floater that Captain Hook could’ve intercepted.

The Chiefs were hoping that either Croyle or Damon Huard would begin to separate themselves in the battle to become the Chiefs’ starting quarterback. But the postgame buzz Saturday centered not on which signal caller played the best.

It was about who performed the worst.

Huard failed to lead the offense to a first down in two series. He also overthrew backup tight end Keith Willis on consecutive passes, the second of which was snared by Browns defensive back Daven Holly. Cleveland took advantage with a 38-yard field goal from Dawson that made it 6-0.

Default Printers fumbles away chance to play hero

Casey Printers was 4 yards away from burying the miserable memories of his dreadful preseason last year.

He was that close to leading the Chiefs to an improbable comeback victory in the final moments.

“When I went out there for the last drive, I told the guys in the huddle, ‘This is what dreams are made of right here.’ We were going to take the ball down the field and win the game,” he said.

That was before Printers fumbled on third and goal from the Cleveland 4 with 30 seconds left. The Browns recovered, allowing them to hold on for a 16-12 win.

Printers, who was dismal in an infamous preseason loss in Houston last year, wasn’t significantly better this time. The Chiefs went three plays and punt in each of his first three possessions.

Default The Chiefs’ quarterback quandary

•First Series: 5 plays, one first down

First-team offensive line and receivers; first-team defense. Completed one of two passes, recovered his own fumble for a 10-yard loss.

•Second Series: 4 plays, one first down

First-team offensive line and receivers; first-team defense. Completed two of three passes — including a 13-yarder to Eddie Kennison — before being intercepted by Cleveland’s Leigh Bodden

•Third Series: 4 plays, one first down

First-team offensive line and receivers; first-team defense. Completed two of three passes, including an 18-yarder to Michael Allan

•First Series: 3 plays, no first downs

Second-team offensive line and receivers; second-team defense. Overthrew tight end Keith Willis on two straight pass attempts, the second of which was intercepted by Cleveland’s Daven Holly.

•Second Series: 3 plays, no first down

Second-team offensive line and receivers; second-team defense: Completed both his passes — to Kolby Smith and Keith Willis — but stymied by a costly holding call.

BRODIE CROYLE
Croyle started the game and played the entire first quarter, mainly with the first unit.

DAMON HUARD
Last year’s part-time starter entered the game in the second quarter and played mostly with the second-team line and receivers.

I would have a better understanding of your statement if Shanahan's record against the Chiefs was similar to Shanahan's record against the Raiders.

I'm sure all the Chefs' fans are saying the same thing right now. I bet they repeat it over and over, just like a mantra.

This gem of a game is replaying on NFL network in a few mins. This should be a fun watch.

Every game and I mean every game against a divisional opponent is absolutely crucial.

Croyle had little to no touch and was gunning the ball too high for that hard of a throw. His tackle sucks, but most of his throws were to check-down guys and release valves. It was not an impressive performance at all. I expected him to do much more especially after an entire season and two training camps (one as the starter) to get up to speed. He has a long way to go.

What's funny is how the Chief fans are spinning it saying he looked pretty good except for (Interception, fumble, bad throws). That's like saying Sarah Jessica Parker is hot except for her ugly horse face. I think they've lost sight of what good quarterbacking looks like. They perspective can best be summed up by one of the comments from this poster in their game thread.

Frye looking like Montana.
So there you go. When Charlie Frye looks good, you've got trouble in River City.

Thanks Clean.

Kaylore how would you compare Ramsey with Croyle and Huard just from Preseason. Ramsey seemed to be hot and cold from what I heard. Is he actually on target?

True, it's just the first preseason game. Not much should be made of it.

When the season begins, that's when the Chiefs will display their pathetic offense.

Not intended as smack. That's just the way it looks to me.

Why? How much bearing does Shanny's erstwhile record against the Chiefs have on this year?

Here is a partial list of players who have NOT played for Shanny against the
Chiefs: Cutler, Henry, Kuper, Pears (at RT), Stokley, Adams, Kennedy, Moss,
Crowder, Webster, Lewis, Green, Williams (at MLB), Bly, Shoate, Hixon.

Coaches who weren't there for the Broncos against KC: Bates, O'Brien, Johnson.

I can come up with a list of Chiefs who will no longer be playing for the
Broncos, starting at the QB and O-line, but you pretty well should know who
they are.

Nope. Methinks you should be talking about what is, not what was.

I think that's what is most troubling to me: The names change but the results are very similar. Most years, the Broncos and Chefs split the regular season games. I hope the Broncos can finally turn the corner this year and dominate the Chiefs in two games instead of one. However, I'm not going to count that chicken until it hatches. Can't give credit where credit isn't due. Not going to make predictions based on players and coaches who have never participated in a regular season Bronco game.

Good point. With such a large number of new faces on the squad, one can
wonder if they will beat anyone but themselves for a while . . .

Didn't the dolts sweep us last year. I am more concerned about them than another team in our division.

Why are you people judging KC's offense right now?

A starter has not been named at QB, LJ was not playing, we played with no FB, our best blocking TE was out, D-Bowe was not playing, and our LT was not playing.

When our entire team plays together, which will be in week 1, then judge the offense.

And congrats to Charlie Frye for looking good against our 3rd stringers. He looked bad against our first string D. 4/9 for 25 yards and was sacked by Harris. He threw 3 near INT's as well.

But hey, I guess if he's dominating third stringers late in the first half and the whole second half that must mean something right?

Kansas City is most likely our number one rival right now. Of course we will revel in bad play by them. For people to say why do we care they aren't the team to beat is pointless. You always, always, take pleasure in your rivals misgivings.

Raiders are always #1 for me. But the team to worry about this year isn't the Raiders or the Chiefs IMHO.

I'm not worried about them either, SD scares me but your missing the point. This has nothing to do with the season. This has to do with the rivalry, they are separate and unrelated. The Raiders are a huge rivalry but Shanny owning them has dulled it right now. KC has been more of a challenge and even though they are down will still be hard to beat at home. Thus, right now they bring more heated debate and ill will than the Raiders.
