Default Shanny pushes WR into action

Marshall's back

Mike Shanahan told Brandon Marshall it was time to finally practice Friday morning.

Marshall reluctantly went along with the plan. After finally testing his injured quadriceps, Marshall was pleased his coach took the initiative.

"I was scared, but that's what it takes. Coach has about 30 years of experience," Marshall said after practicing in the morning session Friday. "This is my second year so of course I've got to sit back and listen and go with the process.

"Basically he just challenged me to see if I was mentally strong. I mean he knew that I was in pain and it hurts, but he also knows it's one of those things where you have to get out there, push yourself, and just be mentally tough. I challenged myself. If it was up to me I wouldn't have gone, but coach got me out there."

Marshall was taken off the physically unable to perform list Friday morning after spending the first 12 days of training camp on it. The team initially thought Marshall would practice a portion of the morning session but he made it all the way through both the morning and afternoon practices.

Marshall, set to be the No. 2 receiver if he can stay healthy, will likely play in the second preseason game, Aug. 18 at Dallas. The decision to get Marshall back on the field came after an MRI showed he simply had scar tissue and that his injury was healing well.

"I told him this morning that he had to work through it," Shanahan said. "He did it today and I think early in practice he could feel the pain, but he worked through it and I think he feels better right now and that is part of the process."

Lynch touched

Broncos safety John Lynch and tight end Nate Jackson were back Friday after attending the private memorial service of legendary former San Francisco coach Bill Walsh at Stanford University on Thursday. The two players represented the Broncos at the service. Lynch played for Walsh at Stanford and Walsh is credited for discovering Jackson at Division III school Menlo College.

"It was a special day," Lynch said. "I appreciate coach Shanahan for allowing me to go. It was an incredible day. To see all of those people out there, it shows what coach Walsh meant to be people."

Fieldwork

In the morning session, the Broncos worked on a lot of pass plays. Nate Jackson continued to be a standout at camp as he caught several passes in the middle.

In one of the more entertaining plays of the session, safety Steve Cargile wouldn't let go of receiver Javon Walker's jersey and Walker desperately tried to break free from the 5-yard line. He didn't make it.

Lynch sat out the morning session and worked in the afternoon. Defensive tackle Gerard Warren was given the day off and he will practice on alternate days.

Point after

Thursday, Walker worked on the Broncos' chain gang, moving the yardage marker after practice. Friday, during practice, Walker spontaneously went into the crowd, behind the Broncos' sideline, and greeted about 10 fans. No. 84 is clearly enjoying himself these days.

Quote of the day

"I think personally we have the best receiving corps in the league and I think if we get healthy and stay healthy, I think we won't be stopped. I mean we have Tony Scheffler, Daniel Graham, Nate Jackson at tight end. We've got the big beast in the backfield, Mike Bell, and Travis Henry, and even Cecil Sapp. I think we have a lot of weapons, and if we stay healthy I think we're going to be really good and probably be the best offense in the league."

Good news. Let's hope he can stay healthy now and catch up on what he's missed.

I don't know if we'll have the #1 offense in the league, but if all the key pieces stay healthy, I think we can be top 5 easily. We know we'll run the ball as well as anybody, and we know we have a deep vertical weapon in Cutler that can keep defenses honest and strike from anywhere on the field. Mix in the speed, size and depth at WR and TE and this O could be pretty special. The key is the O-line though. If they come together and jell, Marshall's point won't seem to far fetched.

I disagree. I dont think we have a top 5 offense. The reason why is because I dont think Cutler is going to play well that first part of the season which will hurt our offensive numbers overall. By week 5 or 6 though I think Cutler will have settled in, and by week 12 or so he should be firing on all cylinders.

This kid needs to shut up and just stay on the field. He's gotten "prima donna" over the last 6 months.

Talk is cheap kid, show it on the field. There a difeerence between being hurt and injured.

Rod Smith, Heinz Ward, hell T.O. have all played hurt. You are more of a question than a known product on the field.
