Don't plan on seeing Jake Plummer in a Bucs uniform anytime soon.
The Bucs, in tandem with the Broncos, have filed a grievance against Plummer for the return of a prorated portion of his signing bonus for a breach of contract. It's a move that effectively ends any chance Plummer will play for the Bucs. Plummer was traded from Denver to Tampa Bay in March but said at the time he planned to retire from the NFL. However, the Bucs own his rights and contract and believe they have the right to recoup money paid to Plummer in a lump sum after he signed his contract because he did not fulfill the five-year commitment. The Bucs continued to hold out hope Plummer would report. Coach Jon Gruden traveled to the player’s native state of Idaho to make a face-to-face appeal over the summer but Plummer didn't budge. Once the start of training camp came and Plummer didn't show, the Bucs pretty much decided to take advantage of the remedies available to them. The teams are seeking a sum of about $7-million, but the matter will have to go through arbitration to be settled. That likely will take several months. The Broncos are believed to have joined forces with the Bucs to avoid questions as to whether the Bucs have a legal standing to pursue money that originally was paid by the Broncos. It’s possible the teams have an agreement under which the Broncos would send their portion of any recouped money to Tampa Bay. -------- http://blogs.tampabay.com/bucs/2007/...lan-on-se.html |

Jake is hunkering down and bunkering down. A sad way to end a career in the NFL.

I would not be able to walk away from all that money and not many would. I respect Jake Plummer for sticking with his decision to retire in the face of all that money.

Why not just report to camp (out o shape), not study the playbook, stink it up in practice, and get cut. Then you get to keep the money.

Okay...a little help please.
Tampa traded Denver a pick based on performance I imagine but once Plummer files for retirement, Denver loses that pick, right? So why exactly should Tampa recover any of the money Denver paid Plummer?? Emotional damages!?!?! |

How much does the Idaho Mens Handball League pay? Maybe he can cover his losses playing Handball for a living.
I am worried that if he does, he may get hooked up with shady people that gamble on Handball and he may get beatup by a priest and lose his arm in a fight, become an alkie, only to find love on a road trip, winning the Greater Idaho Handball championship with one arm. |

It's Idaho. They don't have a handball league. He might be able to find a pick-up game of Ultimate Frisbee somewhere, though.

The condition of the trade, as I remember it, was if he reported, Denver got TB's 4th round pick, if he didn't show up at all, they get the Bucs 7th round pick.

From PFT...discuss:
DID THE BUCS SCREW THE POOCH ON PLUMMER GRIEVANCE? Stephen Holder of the St. Petersburg Times tells us that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers filed their grievance against quarterback Jake Plummer on Monday, August 6. But if Plummer's initial default on his contract occurred when he failed to report for a mandatory minicamp that opened on June 19, it's possible that the Bucs filed the grievance one business day too late. The final outcome will be driven in large part by the language of Plummer's contract. Many such deals require signing bonus money to be repaid in the event of the player being "in default." The argument on Plummer's behalf would be that he was "in default" as of the date on which he failed to show up for the mandatory minicamp, and at that point the Bucs had 45 days to file a grievance. In other words, once a guy is "in default" the clock begins to tick, and a subsequent event that would put him "in default" doesn't matter, since he already was "in default." The Bucs will likely argue that the subsequent retirement was the trigger for the 45-day time period. Under the specific terms of Plummer's contract, they could be right. Still, with the Buccaneers being sufficiently prudent about ensuring that they had standing to pursue the money by getting the Broncos to join in the grievance, why wouldn't the Bucs have filed the thing on or before August 3? Article IX of the CBA couldn't be any more clear: "A grievance may be initiated by a player, a Club, the Management Council, or the NFLPA. A grievance must be initiated within forty-five (45) days from the date of the occurrence or non-occurrence upon which the grievance is based, or within forty-five (45) days from the date on which the facts of the matter became known or reasonably should have been known to the party initiating the grievance, whichever is greater." Thus, barring an agreement between the parties to extend the deadline, it's possible that the Bucs filed the thing one day late. Even if they win that argument in the end, why take the risk? |

The Broncos stepping up and filing with Tampa is basically to reassert that they did transfer Plummer's contract, and all financial responsibilities for the team and Plummer that entails, to Tampa Bay. Hopefully there was a clause in the trade that lets us get better compensation if the Plummer issue is resolved to Tampa Bay's satisfaction ($7M in cash) by next year. I'm glad its not us waiting on it though, thats dead cap money until Plummer pays up. |

Actually, its probably Tampa that will make out like a bandit. All early reports indicate that Tampa will actually be reclaiming the $7 mil because Plummer is a Buc.. That means they traded away a 7th, and get to claim thew $7 mil. That will help them finance the Gaines Adams contract (and others), although it could actually take some time to collect on the debt (once arbitrated).

I doubt Bowlen is going to cry himself to sleep over $7M that would've reduced the amount of cap we'd have this season, keeping us from signing as many key FA acquisitions and therefore made us less competative. This organization is about winning first and foremost. Tampa Bay can probably afford the dead weight for this season while they rebuild and it'll help keep them financially viable. The Broncos are always financially viable and we don't rebuild, we reload. |
