Jackson, who played 13 seasons for the Saints, owes nearly $160,000 to the mother of his child, putting him first among the 18 men on this year's edition of the Office of Family Support's most wanted list. Even though Jackson, 49, held the No. 2 spot last year, when he owed about $132,000, "this is his first year on the poster," department spokeswoman Cleo Allen said. An expanded version of the poster is on the department's Web site. Because it has more space, the site's version displays 49 people. Jackson, who is pictured wearing his Saints uniform, played with the team from 1981 through 1993. He played the next two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, earning a Super Bowl ring there, before retiring in 1995. Jackson's most recent address is in Pahokee, Fla., his birthplace. His telephone has a privacy blocker; he could not be reached for comment. In an interview with The Advocate of Baton Rouge, Robbie Endris, director of the Department of Social Services' Support Enforcement Services division, said her department tried to work with Florida authorities to get the money from Jackson. But when a petition was filed seeking Florida to enforce the Louisiana order to pay up, Jackson's attorney filed an objection, which the court granted, Endris said. Efforts to reach Jackson's child and the child's mother were unsuccessful. According to department records, about 60,000 parents are delinquent in child-support payments. The poster has been published annually since 1998. This year's poster was the first since Hurricane Katrina. The identity of the person who occupied the No.¤1 spot in 2005 was unavailable Wednesday, Allen said. Although most people behind in their payments, including everyone on this year's poster, are men, women have been there too, Allen said. Criteria for getting on the poster are: --Owing more than $5,000 in child-support payments. --Paying nothing within the previous six months. --Having an address the department can't find. --Lacking any other way to track the person down. To get these people to pay up, Allen said the department has several means at its disposal, including garnisheeing wages and lottery winnings; suspending business, hunting and driver's licenses; reporting the delinquency to credit bureaus; and seizing assets, including property. The person who has spent the most time on the department's list is Marco Machona, who has been there since 2002. He is a scientist whose last known address was in Zimbabwe, Africa. According to the department, he owes almost $32,000 in payments for one child. |
