Default Broncos adjusting to roster changes, Secondary grabs some Chinese Food

Broncos adjusting to roster changes
Turnover on team creates urgency to jell before opener
By Bill Williamson
Denver Post Staff Writer

Broncos defensive backs John Lynch, Nick Ferguson, Domonique Foxworth and Jeff Shoate were on their way to have Chinese food Saturday for one last meal before training camp started. As they headed to the players' parking lot at Dove Valley, cornerback Dré Bly arrived, ready to report for his first season in Denver.

His new secondary mates invited him along. Bly hurriedly went to his locker and ran back out to the parking lot. All five players piled into Bly's SUV and off they went.

"The guys quickly accepted me," Bly said. "Stuff like that happens all the time. We're already a family. We've already clicked."

There is a lot of clicking that needs to be done quickly at Dove Valley. Many faces have changed. Some players even have joked that they need a media guide to help familiarize themselves with the new people in the locker room. The Broncos led the NFL by adding 14 veterans through free agency and trades this offseason. Add the four draft picks, and there will be up to 18 new faces on the roster. That doesn't include any possible surprise additions who will likely be part of the 53-man roster.

The offseason of change was pushed by the Broncos going 9-7 in 2006 and not making the playoffs. This is not a team in the rebuilding process. Changes were made to enhance a roster full of talent that underachieved last year. That's why big-ticket players such as Bly, running back Travis Henry, tight end Daniel Graham and defensive end Jarvis Moss, the Broncos' first- round draft pick, were brought in.

So the key to this season of change is for the Broncos to grow closer on and off the field as soon as possible.

Will this team jell by Sept. 9, when it opens the regular season at Buffalo?

"We have to," Lynch said. "We have no choice."

Lynch said a major focal point of the next six weeks, particularly the two-practices-a-day training camp portion, will be dedicated to the team coming together. Lynch said there are three reasons he thinks it will work.

Every year, every team has significant turnover in the free- agency era of the NFL. The Broncos brought in quality players to mesh with the holdovers on the roster. The team had 15 practices this spring before training camp, and the players have been working out and conditioning together since early April.

"I think every team is trying to adjust to the changes this time of year," Lynch said. "The team that best does that is the team that wins. But I think we have such a strong core of guys there already and the new guys fit in. This is the reason why I want to be a Bronco. Every year, they address their needs and try to win. That makes it easier for players to come together because we all know the goal here."

Shanahan said the bottom line is the Broncos brought in talented players and, because the roster has been strengthened, the result on the field should be better.

"I could coach a high school that has all the chemistry in the world, but if you don't have enough talent, you're not going to win," Shanahan said. "You have turnover in the NFL and it is our job to make it work and it's the players' jobs to perform."

How did they get that again? Was that Front four amazing with a team leading 4 Sacks? Or was it the Cover zero Scheme they used the second half REV?

Or it could've been a career year by Bailey playing under SLOWIKS coaching and even a lucky forced fumble by Todd Sauerbrun. Don't pretend for a second Coyer is NFL Coordinator material.
