US Senators back web censorship

Think of the children

By Nick Farrell: Thursday 26 July 2007, 08:38

US senators issued a bipartisan call for filtering and monitoring technologies on the Internet.
In a meeting where civil liberties groups were not invited, Democrats and Republicans said that the web needed to be censored to protect children.

Commerce Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye and Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee Vice Chairman Ted 'The Internet is made out of tubes" Stevens argued that Internet was a dangerous place where parents alone could not protect their children.

While parents can buy filtering and monitoring technologies to screen out offensive content and to monitor their child’s online activities, the use of these technologies was far from universal and may not be fool-proof, Inouye said.

Stevens, who has also been arguing for phone companies to charge Internet customers twice for the same service, said that Congress has an important role to play to ensure that the protection available in other parts of society find their way onto the Interweb.

The committee wants the FCC to identify industry practices "that can limit the transmission of child pornography".

The FCC would have to come up with a way to identify filtering technologies and identify what could be done to improve the process and better enable parents to "proactively protect" children online.

More here. µ

Sounds like we just need to take "computers" away from children.

What ever happened to parents taking responsibility for their children and their actions? This place just keeps getting worse. I hope my passport gets approved soon.

We all hope your passport gets approved ..

May I suggest Amsterdam, that would be a good place for you until The Muslims start to enforce Shiria law. Enjoy!

You know what man I can agree that there is alot of stuff out there on the web that Kids can access despite filters and websense, but to blanket censor things online because Johnny sees a boob on the google image search when his mom is outta the room is congress's way of trying legislate morality yet again.

It is my life, my computer and my choice as to what I might allow kids to see. I will take my own measures to curb check this in my own house so you (the US congress) can just stay the hell away from my house.

Furthermore in my opinion it is the continmued attempts at legislating morality that is dictatorial and just plain wrong. Who the hell are you to tell me that I should teach creationism over the more accurate evolution? Who the hell are you to tell Bob and Steve or Linda and Beuhla they can't get married because it offends preachers? Who the hell are you to JOHN ASHCROFT, to try and cover or alter the statue of lady Justice in our nations capital (sorry i am still pissed about that, 2002 when he was AG)

This nation falls behind everyone else in the world in educating our kids because of taking reverse steps instead of forward strides and all because of our government's atempts at legislating morals. That is our job as Parents, Teachers, community leaders and citizens so stick it up your butts and stop trying to run our lives.

The internet is the last medium Average Joe has to obtain information

This isnt about censoring for the sake of kids - its an excuse to get people on board on the idea of limiting their own ability to seek information

another control tactic under the ruse of 'trust us, this will be good for you'

Very true. It's also a medium to spread lies and half truths. that's something to consider as well.

Has anyone ever actually proven that looking at Janet Jackson's saggy boob
scarred any children for life? I mean European and Japanese kids see boobies
on their TV all the time and they seem perfectly happy and well adjusted.

This all goes back to the FCC making laws and not being an elected body of government.
