Iraq has been a tough tough situation. Little pockets are starting to show improvement though but unfortunatly that really doesn't make the big picture look all that more rosey. It is good to read though that in some areas things are getting better.

Good read... I don't doubt that there are pockets of stability. I wish more areas were like this and we could start bringing our kids home.

There was a guest on Hardball today saying this is true there are areas that are under control but he went on the say due to a shortage of troops we were now fighting to regain control over areas that we had secured in the past but due do a lack of sufficient troop numbers they were lost when the troops were needed elsewhere. he went on to say that we had 90 % of our ground troops committed in Iraq. He basically said we are in an un-winnable situation. He also made the point that while our troops are making incredible sacrifices for the Iraqi people the Iraqi government is currently on vacation.
Sooner or later we will have to get out. All we are doing is prolonging the inevitable. |

The so called surge is merely the prelude to the next world war.

Patrick Cockburn has been reporting from inside Iraq since the US invasion started in 2003. Unlike other reporters -- he does not stay in the "Green Zone." He travels around the country. Cockburn offers a more accurate read about the big picture. Check out his almost daily articles at Counterpunch.

Well, I suppose it's possible but I find it very hard to believe we could conquer and hold both Iran and Iraq simultaneously when we can't even hold Iraq. The unlikeliness of that scenario suggests that an attack on Iran is not imminent.
And I'm still waiting for the "imminent" attack on Syria that the extreme left were screaming about a few years ago. |

But if the Gulf explodes -- for example, if Israel attacks Iran to destroy its nuclear program -- all bets are off. Then we will see war across the region -- from Lebanon to Afghanistan -- possibly also involving Pakistan and the Gulf oil states. If nukes are used we will suddenly find ourselves in very different kind of world. It will be chaotic -- and extremely dangerous. |

To much of the world, absolutely. If they go off, it will be blamed on them. On the same token, someone has to take that little SOB out of the picture. I'm guessing if iran gives them a reason, they'll level Tehran and all hell breaks loose. Could get interesting over the next few years..dman

So if it happens -- we are supposed to turn the other cheek -- and accept the apologies of Israeli PM Olmert for liquidating a few million Iranians, including old men, women, children and infants? Not to mention the unborn and the devastation of the environment. "If they go off" it won't be some accident. It will be a conscious decision by Israel to engage in genocide. As Mordechai Vanunu has stated: "These are weapons of mass slaughter and have no defensive use." |

[QUOTE=mhgaffney;1657969]If they go off?
So if it happens -- we are supposed to turn the other cheek -- and accept the apologies of Israeli PM Olmert for liquidating a few million Iranians, including old men, women, children and infants? Not to mention the unborn and the devastation of the environment. It doesn't have to be nuclear...They level that place using strictly conventional weapons. That being said, we should leave them all to themselves and worry about our business at home. |
