Default 5 Pathetic Drafts

More useless draft information, and I'm sure already covered.....but this still astounds me.....

In the 5 drafts we held from 2000 through 2004, we drafted a total of 44 players.....yet only FIVE remain with the team. You could say FOUR, actually, because I counted Jeff Shoate, cause technically he's still on the roster, but won't make this year's team, most likely.

2000
Rd 1 (15) - Deltha O'Neal
Rd 2 (40) - Ian Gold
Rd 2 (45) - Kennoy Kennedy
Rd 3 (70) - Chris Cole
Rd 4 (101) - Jerry Johnson
Rd 4 (112) - Cooper Carlisle
Rd 5 (154) - Muneer Moore
Rd 6 (189) - Mike Anderson
Rd 7 (214) - Jarious Jackson
Rd 7 (246) - Leroy Fields

2001
Rd 1 (24) - Willie Middlebrooks
Rd 2 (51) - Paul Toviessi
Rd 3 (87) - Reggie Hayward
Rd 4 (113) - Ben Hamilton
Rd 4 (120) - Nick Harris
Rd 6 (190) - Kevin Kasper

2002
Rd 1 (19) - Ashley Lelie
Rd 2 (51) - Clinton Portis
Rd 3 (96) - Dorsett Davis
Rd 4 (131) - Sam Brandon
Rd 5 (144) - Herb Haygood
Rd 6 (191) - Jeb Putzier
Rd 7 (228) - Chris Young
Rd 7 (231) - Monsanto Pope

2003
Rd 1 (20) - George Foster
Rd 2 (51) - Terry Pierce
Rd 4 (108) - Quentin Griffin
Rd 4 (114) - Nick Eason
Rd 4 (128) - Bryant McNeal
Rd 5 (157) - Ben Claxton
Rd 5 (158) - Adrian Madise
Rd 6 (194) - Aaron Hunt
Rd 7 (227) - Clint Mitchell
Rd 7 (235) - Ahmaad Galloway

2004
Rd 1 (17) - D.J. Williams
Rd 2 (41) - Tatum Bell
Rd 2 (54) - Darius Watts
Rd 3 (85) - Jeremy LeSueur
Rd 5 (152) - Jeff Shoate
Rd 6 (171) - Triandos Luke
Rd 6 (190) - Josh Sewell
Rd 7 (225) - Matt Mauck
Rd 7 (247) - Brandon Miree
Rd 7 (250) - Bradlee Van Pelt

Pretty pathetic.....and nobody from the 2003 draft left.

You don't judge drafts by who is left on the team. You judge them by who is still playing in the NFL. Just because a guy isn't with the team that drafted him doesn't mean he was a bad selection; It just didn't work out.

Also take into consideration who we we have for trading some of these guys. Portis for Bailey plus Tatum who then we moved with Foster for Bly.

Plus we moved up 7 spots to get D.J. for trading Deltha.

I think you have to factor in where we draft as well. Could we draft better of course those drafts were awful and we still pick no higher then 19 without a trade up.

I understand that. So my "blanket" statement wasn't quite fair. However, take a look at the 2003 draft....besides Big George, who's left in the league from that.

And yes, I understand we now have Champ instead of Portis....etc., etc.

I guess I would just expect a LITTLE more retainage from our drafts than 4 out of 44 players.

2003 wasn't a good year for most teams......just look at the 1st round and you tell me who you'd rather have? I'd be surprised if you found more than 3 players

Who here is going to say Mike Anderson, Reggie Hayward, Clinton Portis, Kenoy Kenedy and Cooper Carlisle were bad draft picks?

2003 draft? Yeah, you're right....I was just looking at it.....not much there.

Only notables seem to be Carson Palmer, Terrell Suggs, Ty Warren, Troy Palamalu....but they were taken before we picked.....

Guys taken AFTER George Foster, that I would have rather had (hindsight is so nice)....are Willis McGahee (maybe), Dallas Clark, Larry Johnson, Anquan Boldin, Cory Redding....that's about it.

Seriously, you're right......very weak draft, now looking back.

I have to agree with you. Mike Anderson made a huge contribution to the Broncos while he was with them. 1500 yards as a Rookie. Several very solid seasons after that. Played where he was asked without making a big stink about it, a real team player. They just chose to not pay him and he moved onto the Ratbirds. This story plays over and over again throughout the NFL.

HAyward, Kenedy, Carlsile and portis are all going to be starting this year, just not for the Broncos.

Some people just have unreal expectations.

Indeed. Even the teams that normally draft well did badly in 2003.

Yes. Many of those players are starters or at least still playing on other teams. Also the '03 draft sucked across the board. It was just a terrible draft class.

7 excellent picks and a few good ones. Not great drafts but drafting has never been Shanahan's strong point anyway. FA and trading is where he's always been great and picking up street FA's such as Rod Smith, Matt Lepsis etc. We traded for 3 of the best 5 players on our team using some of those picks mentioned above.

I would love to see the percentages against the league. Like how many people draft in year x are still with the NFL, because I think some of those whole draft classes were weak.

Gotta love people's expectations for 1st round picks, especially when only 1/3 re-sign with their original team. Lelie and O'Neal are not busts.

Wade Phillips picked up Rod in 1994, not Mike (Shanny was in SanFran shattering records w/ Young and Rice).
