Nuggets sign free-agent G Atkins
July 16, 2007

DENVER (AP) -- The Denver Nuggets signed free-agent guard Chucky Atkins on Monday, three days after point guard Steve Blake returned to Portland.

Atkins averaged 13.2 points and 4.6 assists last year with the Memphis Grizzlies, second best in his eight-year career.

"Chucky will be a great addition to our team," Nuggets vice president for basketball operations Mark Warkentien said Monday. "He is a proven veteran who can really shoot the basketball."

Atkins spent a season and a half in Memphis after stints with Orlando, Detroit, Boston, the L.A. Lakers and Washington. He has averaged 10.8 points, 3.7 assists and 1.8 rebounds in 599 games.

He shot .369 from 3-point range in 161 appearances with the Grizzlies.

"I'm very excited to be a Nugget," Atkins said. "This is a great situation for me and I'm looking forward to winning a championship here in Denver."

Blake, who signed a free-agent deal with the Trail Blazers on Friday, averaged 8.3 points and 6.6 assists in 49 games with Denver last season.

He can't be all bad:

Atkins and his wife, Monica, have two daughters, Jasmine, 8, and Jade, 4, and an infant son, Joel. They plan to move to Denver from Orlando, Fla. Atkins is already good friends with Broncos Kenard Lang, Travis Henry and Dré Bly.

It was a big mistake to let Blake get away ... he was perfect here.

I dunno about that. I liked what Blake provided, but I think he and Atkins are basically interchangeable and Atkins came much cheaper.

Is Atkins as good a ball protector, transition-game starter, and will he be okay with just 6-8 shots a game?

How's his defense?

I really did like what Blake brought to the Nuggets' game. Shame he didn't have the chance to see if they could improve their results next year......

Like I said above, to me he's basically interchangeable with Blake. Their skill sets are very similar.

As for the his D, he's no sieve but he's no Gary Payton in his prime. Anthony Carter and Atkins will be the bulk of the minutes at the 1, and sub for AI (what's that like 4 minutes a game?)

Atkins has averaged 11 points per game and just under 4 assists (averaging 26 minutes PG) 37% From 3 point range

Blake in 4 seasons has averaged 6.5 ppg just under 4 assists (22.5 mpg) and also shooting 37% from 3 point range

Don't use the defense argument. Check Blake in the playoffs it wasn't pretty. Atkins will be a better option in the long run. I think this is a good signing.

Good to see he'll fit in from the start.

He'll bring a tough brand of defense.

Atkins is a better fit because he can actually shoot. Blake was costing you guys three to four jumpers a game with his atrocious shooting.

When Iverson drives, defenders converge on him leaving open jumpshooters like Atkins. It's a good signing.

I did not follow the Nuggets closely until the playoff series against the Spurs. I did not see much out of Blake. I wanted to see some penetration and be a little more clutch from 3 point range. He did protect the ball but that is about all I saw.

He was a hell of a passer, but I cringed every time he shot the ball. I can see the reasoning behind letting him sign elsewhere.

I'm not sad we lost Blake. For th amount of money he wanted, he wasn't worth it. Listen, the guy was a solid PG and could pass pretty well but he wanted to throw up some jumpshots and all you would hear when they came down was, "CLANK!". He couldn't shoot to save his life and there was more than one or two moments against the spurs where he brought the ball down the court and just heaved em' up.

See ya Blake!

Well as a Grizz fan (well I am not a big NBA guy but watch some on tv and go to a few a year) Atkins is fair. He helped us some just dont expect much. He is a pg but to me doesnt seem to feel the plays I was never that impressed by him. he has a streaky jumper and not a guy great on penetration. He is a good back up no matter, I am still bitter cause we had to start him.
