Default Packers Eyeballing LJ

PACKERS EYEBALLING L.J.

A couple of weeks ago, former Packers linebacker George Koonce hinted on his way out of a front office job with the team that the Pack could be making a significant acquisition on offense.

The player in question could be Chiefs running back Larry Johnson.

WTMJ in Milwaukee reports that the Packers are "keeping a very close eye" on Johnson's situation. With one year remaining on his Kansas City contract, at a salary of $1.7 million, Johnson has made it clear that he wants a new contract before he endures another 400-carry season. The Chiefs discreetly dangled their Johnson (we couldn't resist) prior to the draft, but found no takers.

The problem is that anyone who wants L.J. will have to satisfy his contractual demands, and bow to the trade expectations of G.M. Carl Peterson. We think that, at a minimum, it'll take $25 million in guaranteed money to make Johnson happy, and a first-round pick and a third-round pick to get the Chiefs to bite.

If Johnson was worth that kind of a total investment, the Chiefs would be making it.

The reality here is that Johnson already has a lot of miles on the tires, and that it's still unclear whether Johnson is a truly great running back. Also, the fact that he carries the ball a lot puts him at greater risk of the kind of injury that would make the investment in his services look foolish in hindsight.

Absent a trade, there could be a nasty and protracted holdout. Johnson and Peterson have heads of solid rock, and we could envision both sides digging in, even if it's in no one's best interests to do so.

I hope the Pack offer a low third and then the Chiefs sign him to some huge contract for seven years.

It's in your best interests to see LJ out of KC.

I agree with that. I want to see him washed up as a Chief, not as a Packer.

LJ or no LJ, either way it won't matter. For this season, they'll be screwed without him but for the future, KC needs to upgrade their QB (Sorry, I don't think Mr. Croyle is the answer) and their o-line (as well as replacing LJ if they trade him) before any AFC West teams need to really worry about them. And Bowe needs to pan out. It's not too soon to start thinking of grooming someone to take over for Gonzalez as well.

How do you figure? It was our defense that was key in defeating you last year.

Not really....assuming you get a boatload of picks in return. LJ has 2-3 more prime years left and the line sucking wont help him. I'd rather suffer through LJ gashing us 5 more times or whatever then you getting 1st and a 3rd or whatever it is.

It's a moot point anyway, LJ is in a position to veto any trade because no one will trade for him unless they have already worked out an extension. Unless GB is willing to give him an absolutely massive deal, I dont think he would go there.....its too white (for him), too cold and there isnt anything to do there. LJ wants the big city nightlife, he was crowing on and on about New York when he was there in the summer.

Trading LJ would be a smart idea. KC would get a 1st round pick and either a 2nd or 3rd and that would favor us since Herm is an exceptional good in the draft. I like having LJ in KC, but wouldn't be opposed to a good trade if it meant getting better in the future...

And let's give Croyle a chance to start some games to see what he can do before calling him a bust..

Hey SoCal, wasn't Green Bay one of the teams I mentioned would make a move for LJ back when these rumors first popped up? You know, back when Bob was trying to tell us it was bull**** and my "inside source" was a joke?

Shhhh Don't tell KC that it would be a good idea to trade LJ now. I would love to see him out of the West but like Socal said might as well just deal with him for another couple years and be done with him.

If they trade him and used those picks wisely and if Croyle and Bowe work out for them then in a few years they could have some good young offensive weapons. But that's a lot of IFs and lets hope that Croyle and Bowe don't turn out to be anything special.

Chiefs would be lucky to get a 2nd rounder for LJ. A 1st and anything else is just a wild pipe dream. Shaun Alexander, coming off an MVP season, couldn't get any offers higher than what, a 4th? Anyone remember?

Sure, it's premature to call Croyle a "bust", though I didn't call him a bust. I've just never been impressed with his college career and I don't think he has enough talent around him that you want when you bring along a young quarterback, especially if you get rid of LJ. That's the whole irony of Kansas City's situation on offense. He might not be horrible but I just don't think he's a "franchise quarterback". Anyway, that's just my opinion of him and if he proves me wrong, I'll eat crow.

As for LJ going for a first and a second or third, I don't think it's going to happen. He's going to cost too much money for a new team since he wants to be paid like LT or better, and despite not getting much playing time earlier in his career, he's got a lot of mileage put on him in the past two years. Those are issues that will factor into his value.

I believe you're correct. 4th was the best offer they could get for Mr. MVP.

It depends on the value they can get for him.

If it's a second, I wouldn't do it if I were the Chiefs, unless they really want to get rid of his baggage.

I don't understand why they just don't pay the guy. He has definitely earned a new contract and yeah, he wants more than they want to pay but he's their offense right now.
