Girl's feet severed on ride at Six Flags in Kentucky
POSTED: 10:36 p.m. EDT, June 21, 2007

(CNN) -- A girl's feet were cut off Thursday when a free-fall thrill ride malfunctioned at the Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom Amusement Park in Louisville, Kentucky, police said.

A cord wrapped around the 16-year-old's feet and severed them at her ankles while she was on the "Superman Tower of Power," a police dispatcher said. The girl was taken to a local hospital.

"That could have been all of us -- riding that ride," Whitney Sandfer, who witnessed the accident, told CNN affiliate WDRB/WMYO.

The incident took place shortly before 5 p.m. ET, according to Six Flags spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg. The park remained open, but the ride in question was shut down and will remain so until the full investigation is complete, Goldberg said.

During the ride, passengers are lifted to 177 feet, suspended momentarily and then dropped, according to the park's Web site.

Passengers drop 154 feet at 54 mph, stopping "just 20 terrifying feet above the pavement," it adds.

"I seen the car go up. Then, like, the cable broke, I heard -- pwchh -- and I heard a lot of people screaming," Chris Stinnett, who was at a ride next to the Superman Tower of Power, told WDRB/WMYO.

"The cable went under the car -- and I seen it pull up and hit a lot of people -- and I seen them bring their legs up," Stinnett said.

The ride was introduced in 1995.

I have been on a ride at six flags when it stopped and we had to vacate it by the system of stairs and passage ways off of the ride. Scary.

Fortunately, I left with both feet attached to my legs.

I know it's gruesome, but I hope someone had the presence of mind to get her feet in ice and hopefully they could try to reattach them. Not likely, I know.....

Aside from her pain, I can only imagine the anguish her parents are going through. What a nightmare for that whole family.

Just speculating here... but blunt-force traumatic amputaion of anything is just about impossible to re-attatch. Bones, nerves, arteries, veins, muscles, ligaments... all completely pulverized. Doubt there was much to salvage but a couple of gory pieces of evidence.

how this happend is a lift cable snapped as ride fell hitting some people wrapping around the little girls legs and taking them off above the ankles "makes it harder to reattach" ... its friggen tragic ... so can we pls keep this thread somewhere near tasteful ...

i used to live in theme parks... like for 6 summers i bet i was in kings island 500 times ... 5 days a week for 3 months a year as a kid and many other parks but i live near KI , now that im older i just dont know if id ride anything .Like 3 years ago i was back in KI for first time in years and didn't ride son of beast cuz i like to wait till a ride aint new .and it has a bad accident to the point they have redone the whole ride removing the loop "son of beast was the tallest fastest worlds only looping wood coaster ... and that same day i road face off ,a hanging coaster and i have long hair and i just felt like i was asking for bad $hit ... could feel hair acutally catching in the cars body ... if you have long hair watch the hanging coasters. even tho they dont say its a risk, i could feel the pivot in the cars catching my hair .

This theme park brought to you by Dan Snyder. Maybe this little girl will end up being Joe Gibbs boss.

What a tragedy.

Slightly off topic, but don't you just love eyewitness acounts that repeatedly day "I seen it"? The only higher form of quotation is "I done seen it," or "I done sall it."

Unfortunately I don't see her winning in court.

She doesn't have a leg to stand on.

Yeah I know it's tasteless and heartless. I'll go ask for forgiveness.

Doesn't faze me from amusement park rides whatsoever, anymore than the (much higher) risk of running into a tree while skiing stops me from skiing.

No risk, no fun.

My wife and I went to Six Flags in Cali about 7 years ago. She isn't a roller coaster rider... or at least she *wasn't*, but I managed to turn her into one. We got on ride after ride, she was nervous before each one, but afterwards, she was ready to try it again.

There was only one ride she absolutely refused to get on, and no amount of talking would change her mind: The Superman Ride.

Yes, she has it made. Why? She will be able to walk again. Prosthetics have come a long way, especially foot prostethics. She will be able to walk, run and jump, and in some cases probably better than before.

Meanwhile, she is going to get one helluva settlement AND probably lifetime medical bills paid.

She has no feet, for christ's sake. Poor kid. No protestic or money will ever make her whole. Every time she sees a cute guy, every time she has to get up for one of her kids, and then she'll have to deal with it when she's old.
