Default D-line close to getting big boost from Adams

D-line close to getting big boost from Adams
One-year offer for huge tackle
By Bill Williamson
Denver Post Staff Writer

When will the Broncos stop adding veteran players?

The busy franchise is on the verge of acquiring a player who would fill one of the few holes left unfilled during this kinetic offseason.

According to an NFL source close to the situation, the Broncos are expected to sign veteran defensive tackle Sam Adams to a one-year contract. The deal, barring an unexpected breakdown, could be announced as soon as today.

Adams is the biggest name remaining in a slim free-agent market.

The 6-foot-4, 340-pound Adams, who turns 34 on June 13, would give Denver a massive player in the middle of its defensive front. Adams would fit perfectly into Jim Bates' system. Bates, the Broncos' new assistant head coach in charge of defense, loves big defensive tackles. Denver tried to fill the need when trading for Miami's Dan Wilkinson (6-4, 353) on March 3. But the trade was voided March 31 because Wilkinson never reported to the Broncos.

Denver selected Florida defensive tackle Marcus Thomas in the fourth round of the April draft. Thomas (6-3, 296) is expected to get a chance to earn plenty of playing time as a rookie. The Broncos also have signed Alvin McKinley (6-3, 294) of Cleveland. Adams likely would play in a rotation and could start alongside veteran Gerard Warren (6-4, 325).

The Broncos would be Adams' sixth NFL team. Adams began his career with Seattle, which selected the Texas A&M product eighth overall in the 1994 draft. Adams has made three Pro Bowl teams, the last in 2004 while with Buffalo.

The Broncos began looking into signing Adams the day after he was cut by Cincinnati last month. Broncos defensive line coach Bill Johnson coached Adams at Texas A&M.

Adams, who has 44 sacks in 13 seasons, would be the 13th veteran the Broncos have added this offseason. During the recent draft, coach Mike Shanahan said he thought the Broncos were done adding veteran players. But he added that if a quality veteran were to hit the open market and he fit the Broncos' needs, they would consider signing him.

This is good news! It would give Thomas time to develop and still get some playing time. We've beefed up the DT position if this happens...now do your thing Bates.

Excellent addition if it happens. Next season we can aim for a top coverage type safety and any other hole that might appear. I think we will see some serious QB pressure this season.

I think Sam Adams could really help Warren more then anyone else. Warren with a little heat off him might be able to get some confidence back by not seeing as many doubles on first down. I do think though that Adams will have to be kept fresh by rotating him out quite a bit. No big deal really Broncos usually do that anyways to keep DT fresh.

From what I heard Cincinnati was disappointed in his play. THat being said he is a step up and added depth. Hopefully he will come motivated and wanting that Super Bowl ring that has avoided him.

Because he is 34 and can be lazy. He needs to play for a new contract every year.

Very nice move if it pulls through. This would make me feel very good about the DL going into the season.

An Adams signing would mean he's decided to just say no to Kris Jenkins I think.

Probably lost some weight over the winter when he couldn't play for Florida.

This would be a great signing. Not just because Adams can be a reliable hole stuffer on first and second down, it also pushes Thomas, McKinley, Veal, etc. down a notch on the depth chart, and considering that "talent" pool is a very good thing.

Thomas will now get to play a situational pass rush and backup role, McKinley will get to find a home in a role similar to what Ekuban and Pryce have done the last two years (run stuffing end, pass rushing tackle, rotates depending on down), though probably in a reduced capacity. Veal and/or whoever else makes the team at DT will also be far enough down the depth chart that we should only see them on special teams and in the event of an injury.

This would be the cherry on top of a nearly ideal off-season. Losing Wilson still sucks but other than that we've added every other piece we needed for this team and in the right fashion. Spent the big money where we had starting holes open, used the draft to fill an otherwise shallow position, and added veteran leaders across all the other spots that make for some great camp and pre-season battles for starting jobs.

I think what it is is that he has shown he can play at 315 in college, and it is anticipated that he will be asked to play at 315 for the Broncos given Bates' proclivities, but he actually weighed in at the combine at 296. I think that's where it all comes from.

Players are often drafted at weights well below what they end up playing at.. added to which there are lies, damn lies, and NFL player weights.....

Hopefully he's not just here to cash the check. If gets his fat butt in shape before camp, maybe he can give them 15-20 quality plays a game. Otherwise, I'm not going to get too excited about a guy who's play is dropping fast and has never been a hard worker.
