Travis Henry, a prized offseason free-agent pickup by the Broncos, continues to get most of the practice snaps at running back.
"Every day, I'm getting more and more comfortable with the offense, with the line and blocking scheme," Henry said today, the second day of a seven-day team camp. "Just getting better every day." Henry, a compact 5-foot-9, 215-pound back, rushed for 1,211 yards last season for the Tennessee Titans, becoming the first franchise player to amass 1,200 yards since Eddie George in 2000. His head-on, take-it-downfield style should suit the Broncos' offense. "One cut, downhill, that's been my forte my whole career," Henry said. "I think I fit in real good." Henry said Denver's offense could be terrific in the coming season. "We have guys on the offense - at wideout Javon Walker, Brandon Marshall. We got Jay (Cutler) at quarterback, and (tight end) Danny Graham. We got all the weapons. The sky is the limit." I don't see Rod's name in there? |

Yeah, but in his defense he has yet to step on the field with Rod so the guys who came to his mind were probably just the guys he's been lining up with.

Screw forgetting to name Rod Smith. Why on earth would anyone not even mention Hixon. I am not so sure about this Henry guy anymore.

Face it, Rod is not the go too guy anymore. Javon will be the new face of the Broncos receiving corps. Rod had his moment in the sun, time for the new guys to get some attention.

He was listing guys he thinks of as "weapons". Do you think of Rod Smith as a weapon anymore? I know I don't.
I doubt he's forgotten him. |

That's really the point I was trying to make. Not that anybody forgot Rod was still a Bronco but more that he's on the back burner now and it's not just us fans that see this but the current players on the roster are seeing it that way too. Rod, if healthy can still be valuable to us, but he's not the top notch weapon for us. |

With the glut of WRs they team has brought in, I won't be the least bit surprised if Rod and/or Stokely spend the first six weeks on the PUP list. It'll provide an extra body for special teams while giving the brass more time to figure out which youngsters they want to keep.
Besides, with Graham in town I think it will be Scheffler (unless he's on the PUP list as well!) joining Walker and Marshall in the 3-WR sets. |

Rod is probably done. I'll happily gobble down some crow if I'm wrong, but the writing seems to be on the wall.

It all depends on whether the hip was really a big reason for his decline last year. If he can bounce back healthy, he could be a big contributor again. Especially if he's in a less demanding role.

This is a good and bad thing, and I think Rod would agree. Rod always expected that every day for a decade, he could be the next cut. So he trained and lived as if he was fighting for his job. When the time finally hits, he will understand it and I hope the Broncos organization has a spot for him.
Training camp will tell the tale, but there is a lot of competition shaping up at receiver. Rod won't shrink from the competition, so it may rejeuvinate him, we'll just have to see how healthy he is in July. Most guys come off rehab (with Greek) stronger and faster than before because they are concentrating on all kind of muscles they didn't use before. You know when the time comes, Rod will be working as long and hard as anyone to prove himself. I'll be wearing my #80 jersey for training camp and hope that fixing the hip gives him another 1-2 years. If it actually gives him back a little speed, he could have a hell of a year as a #2/#3. |

I think Rod is smart enough to know when to say "when", if he can't contribute, he will retire

Zona, you should be most pissed that Henry didnt include Hixon as a weapon. I mean, future HOFer is being dissed.

I think Rod could flourish with Cutler at Qb...now when i say flourish I'm not talking 80/1200/6 but more like 45/600/3... the problem with plummer and Rod was that Rod is a route runner and if the ball isn't there he isn't going to outleap anyone for it or burn them down the sideline
maybe Cutler can actually deliver some ten yard outs and stab patterns that Plummer never could....route running is rewarded with a strong arm...do you remember how many times a DB jumped over or around our WRs on a third down last year to break up a pass?? won't happen with the way Cutler is goign to zip it in there |

I wonder if keeping Hixon on active roster would cause Shanny to cut Rod?
That would be like cutting an old Walker Tx Ranger for a Young Walker Tx Ranger! |

I am not ready to write off Rod keeping his starting job this year.
Think about it, he has said doctors were amazed he was able to walk let alone play last season with his hip. Let's say last season he played at about 70% at best. Even at 70% he was able to hold off anyone taking his starting job, now after having had surgery to fix the hip he is going to play even better. I like Marshall but i think he has 1 more year before he is starting. GO ROD!!!!!!! |

Im all about giving Rod his props, but I agree with some here that now is the time to pass the torch. Isnt he almost 36 or 37. Production is down considerably. Seems to be more injury prone at this point. I guess we'll see.
