Default Predictions of the future

Thought it might be interesting to hear from those left, right and indifferent regarding what others have predicted (or what you predict) about what the next 100 years will hold for humanity. Each religion has outlines in their scriptures about how the "end" will unfold, I wont add to this first post what the Bible says regarding some of the events, as that may be covered by someone else. If there are those with a very bright/positive outlook on what is in store, that would be interesting and may be good to hear as well...

As I am LDS, I dont expect that many have heard the following thoughts all written many years ago, that seem more plausable now as the times have changed. The first was spoken by Joseph Smith, the second (reportedly) by George Washington.

Joseph Smith (spoken 1830's)

" There will be two great political parties in this country. One will be called the Rebublican, and the other the Democrat party. These two parties will go to war and out of these two parties will spring another party which will be the independent American Party. The United States will spend her strength and means warring in foreign lands until other nations will say, "Let's divide up the lands of the United States' then the people of the US will unite and swear by the blood of their fore-fathers, that the land shall not be divided."

There is another statement made by George Washington, and shared by Anthony Sherman, in 1859, who was 99 at the time. The first newspaper article was published recording this man's story in the National Tribune in 1859, and reprinted in 1880. Anthony claims to have been present when George Washington related a vision that he had. I will not share all of it, but will quote exactly from the newpaper article.

George Washington

"And again I heard the the mysterious voice saying, 'Son of the Republic, look and learn.' At this the dark, shadowy angel placed a trumpet to his mouth and blew three distinct blasts; and taking water from the ocean, he sprinkled it upon Europe, Asia and Africa. The my eyes beheld a fearful scene: from each of these countries arose thick black clouds that were joined into one. And throughout this mass there gleamed a dark red light by which I saw hordes of armed men, who, moving with the cloud, marched by land and sailed by sea to America, which country was enveloped in the volume of the cloud. And I dimly saw these vast armies devastate the whole county and burn the villages, towns and cities that I beheld were springing up."

Oh, and have a nice day

I think the further ahead in the future you are predicting for the less likely your predictions are to be accurate. 100 years from now is too far ahead to predict with any certainty.

But if you want what I think is a pretty good book about what the next few decades will probably hold for us, I recommend The Singularity is Near by Ray Kurzweil.

My predictions:

In ten years electric cars will be superior to internal combustion engine cars in every way and will start to supplant ICE cars on the roads.

In twenty years medical science will have developed treatments that will dramatically slow the aging process. In thirty years they will be able to reverse the aging process altogether.

By 2020 the first robots that can function in natural environments will be rolling off the assembly lines. By 2040 they will be commonplace. The robotics and AI revolution will dramatically reduce prices and raise the standard of living. A great decentralization movement will begin as people relocate from big cities to small towns where land is plentiful. High-speed maglev trains will connect every city and town by 2050 making commutes of hundreds of miles possible (if one needs to commute at all that is). Eventually all cities and towns will be approximately the same size.

By 2030 100% of the secrets of human biochemisty will be known leading to stunning treatments of all kinds of conditions. By 2040 you will even be able to change your appearance at will.

And the Chargers will will every Superbowl starting this year.

Every thing here, I would ok with except the Chargers false-prophecy. If we ever learned out to lengthen telimiers (sp) and reverse the aging process, cant see how that would be good. You think we are crowded now...

Although telomeres do shorten with successive cell generations, the relationship of this phenomenon to aging hasn't yet been established.

I am also concerned with overpopulation due to increasing lifespans. But if the technology of the coming decades leads to production of resources that outstrips our ability to reproduce (and I think it just might) we should be OK.

President Hixon, recently retired from the Denver Broncos after breaking all NFL records by leading the team to 15 consecutive world championships and winning the Nobel Peace prize and the Medal of Freedom, will bring peace to the earth.
