Default Broncos' Bailey aiming to get pickier

Broncos' Bailey aiming to get pickier
By Jim Armstrong
Denver Post Staff Columnist

Notes from the Valley of the Dove ...

Champ Bailey has a personal goal for next season. He wants to intercept more passes than he did in 2006.

Sounds good - except for the fact he tied for the league lead last season with 10 picks, seemingly one for every time an opposing quarterback threw his way.

Come on, Champ, you're going to top 10 picks? Can't happen, can it?

"It's possible," Bailey said.

OK, how many then? Eleven? Twelve? Thirty-seven?

Depends on how many times he gets tested, Bailey says.

"Well, if I get 15, I'm going to get 15, then." ...

Everything you needed to know about Bailey in two sentences, courtesy of Mike Shanahan: "He's not content just being a great player. He wants to be the best player." ...

Stephen Alexander, at 31 the senior statesman among the Broncos' tight ends, when asked if he was sweating his roster spot after the Daniel Graham signing: "To be honest with you, no, the thought has never crossed my mind. ... I've had a great career. So if it ended today, I'd be extremely happy that I was able to do it for as long as I have." ...

Trust me, Alexander isn't going anywhere. The Broncos need numbers at that position, what with the coaches planning to use a ton of two-tight end formations. ...

And now for today's reality check, brought to you by the standard of the cornerback industry. Bailey, when asked if the three defensive linemen the Broncos drafted had impressed him during the team's quarterback camp: "They got a lot of hype coming out of college, but I'll tell you what: This is the NFL. They've got to win those jobs." ...

Bailey is getting older. He needs to somehow sustain the great play of the past 2 seasons. Hopefully the added meat up front will prolong Bailey's career at corner.

Even after he starts to lose a step (doubt it will happen though for at least another 3-4 years), we can look forward to a few years of Bailey at safety, a la Rod Woodson, I bet. So we got that going for us...which is nice.

Probably 27-32 is when they can be their most productive. We picked the right time to try and upgrade the front four.

I hope Bailey does get 10, a pro bowl and get to hold up a Lombardi. O.K. Maybe 6 game winning touchdowns is too much but I want at least 5.

I think Bly is going to have fun being a Bronco.

Good, I thought he was 30 already. He entered the league at a very young age, right?

He left Georgia a year early, and played his first NFL game at age 21.

I see, thanks guys. That means he has... what? At least 3 more years at a very high level? When do you think he would switch to safety? And has he ever said ANYTHING about wanting to do that? Maybe he won't... who knows.

I expect at least another 4 or 5 years playing at a high level....perhaps still the best CB in the league at 34......Champ Bailey at 75% is still better than most the CB's in the league, and that's no exaggeration....he truly is in a "league of his own".....the guy could seriously play until he is 40 years old, barring injury.....Darrel Green played 20 years.....
