Keep in mind that this article was originally published on May 5th, before the start of our OTAs and private mini camps (and thus the evaluation of Kuper, Holland, Myers etc. in these camps) and the quotes refer to conversations pre-draft (they also mention post draft conversations but not specifying teams), so I dont know whether we are still interested, but I still thought it was pretty interesting.
SF willing to part with right guard Smiley Chicago, Denver, Baltimore and Seattle have called the 49ers about possible trades By MATT MAIOCCO THE PRESS DEMOCRAT SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers are willing to trade right guard Justin Smiley for a second-round draft pick. ADVERTISEMENT Smiley knows because 49ers coach Mike Nolan told him in a recent conversation. The 49ers and Smiley are far apart on a contract extension, with Smiley's deal set to expire at the end of the upcoming season. Nolan said Friday following the first practice of the team's three-day minicamp that he is not shopping Smiley or right tackle Kwame Harris, whose contract also is set to expire at the end of the season. But he also cautioned that everybody has a price. "I have a lot of respect for both players," Nolan said. "I'm in no hurry to get rid of those guys. There have been some guys who we've had here where their days were numbered, but not those two guys." Whereas the 49ers could have locked up Smiley to a long-term extension with about $8 million in guaranteed money several months ago, the figure it would take to sign Smiley now has nearly doubled. Free-agent guards Derrick Dockery, Kris Dielman and Eric Steinbach cashed in, with each receiving at least $17 million guaranteed. "I'm not asking to big-time anybody or over-the-top them," Smiley said. "I just want what's fair. We'd make it worth their while and discount them to be here. Right now, we're far apart." Chicago, Denver, Baltimore and Seattle called the 49ers about possible trades, Smiley said. The 49ers have even given his agent, Pat Dye Jr., permission to speak with teams about a possible trade. "Before the draft, about four or five teams were courting me and Nolan said he wasn't going to give me away," Smiley said. "They were strong on asking for a second-round pick for me." Even since the draft, the 49ers have fielded some calls about Smiley and Harris, team vice president of player personnel Scot McCloughan indicated this week. "Every day, teams are trying to entice them," Smiley said. "It makes me feel good because I know last season I had a good season, and this year I'm taking it to another level. I'm very excited about it." Smiley is not participating in the minicamp after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder on Jan. 16. But he said his offseason is going well, as he has increased his weight to 313 while maintaining his trademark quickness and athleticism. Smiley played a year ago at 295, and said he lost 28 pounds in three weeks following the surgery. "Hopefully, something gets done here because I want to be here," Smiley said. "I'm going to play like I'm part of this team." In other 49ers news and notes: The following players were held out of practices because of injuries: receiver Darrell Jackson (toe), cornerback Shawntae Spencer (foot), offensive linemen Smiley (shoulder), Jonas Jennings (shoulder) and Eric Heitmann (leg), and tight end Delanie Walker (shoulder). Jackson passed a physical last week before the 49ers finalized the trade with Seattle for a fourth-round pick. The team expects him to be available for the opening of training camp in late July and hopes he'll be ready for organized team activities at the end of this month. Receiver Ashley Lelie sustained a right quad strain early in practice while going for a deep pass thrown by quarterback Alex Smith. His availability for the remainder of the weekend practices is uncertain. Defensive lineman Bryant Young, who is attending the funeral of former 49ers linebacker Kevin Mitchell, and guard Larry Allen were excused from the workouts. The 49ers signed eight undrafted player quarterback Luke Getsy (Akron), defensive ends Zach Anderson (Louisville) and Darius Sanders (Oregon), tight end Zac Herold (Nebraska-Omaha), cornerback Sammy Joseph (LSU), punter Ken Parrish (East Stroudsburg), DE, receiver Dominique Zeigler (Baylor) and kicker MacKenzie Hoambrecker (Northern Iowa). Why on earth would they be looking to re-sign Kwame Harris? He might be the worst starting tackle in the league.

IIRC, there was a mention in the Post after Day 1 that said Denver made 0 attempts to trade for Smiley (and Moats and Jenkins too).

Are you sure it's RIGHT guard? I hear props for little Ben Hamilton from the coaches but that was pre-Cutler with the scrambling man back there. He gets owned trying to sink in and battle straight up with big DT's against the pass rush. It would not bother me to see Holland take his job.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Hamilton plays LG, and Carlise was the RG. Now they have Holland and there is some thought that Kuper might play some there, as well. Actually, I think the Oline may be set but some of them are a bit short on experience....
OT: what does IIRC stand for? |

From watching Hamilton's performance in the 5 games Jay was the starter, I think Holland was brought in to replace Hamilton, not compete with Kuper for the other guard position. (and dang, I never really noticed it till now, but Hamilton is EXTREMELY small (in terms of being an o-linemen in the NFL). I thought he was a TE for a second). It's a good catch, SoCal. However it is a small blurb and not a very official one. I'm inclined to think that if they become concerned about right guard, or any position, we'll see some more moves as camp approaches and whatnot.
However seeing as they haven't even brought any in for the practice squad since Montrae Holland was signed, right now they only have three pure guards on the roster. Ben Hamilton, Holland and Kuper. That either means they are confident in what they have or more is on the way. I do know that if Shanahan feels we need help in an area he always goes out and brings guys in. We'll see. |

Two years ago I said Hamilton was the worse OL and that he got overpowered too much in fact I predicted that he would be let go... Instead Shanny gave him a nice big long contract.

Hamilton is one of the better guards in the league, especially for our system. Thank god some of you aren't in the front office.

I agree, what Hamiliton lacks in size, he more than makes up for it with technique. Hamiliton is still a great fit for this team considering we still use a zone blocking scheme. On passing situations he may not be as good as running situations, but what we might see this season is a rotation at guard where Hamiliton comes out and a better pass blocker comes in.

Everyone seems to think Hamilton is such a pansy on the OL, yet he keeps getting the highest grades of the OL every year? Someone explain that please. How can someone's performance be that poor and the coaches feel he performed the best year in and year out?
As for the Guard position, Denver is going to have turnover at Right guard as Carlisle is gone. Might as well get as much competition as they can. |

Hamilton's larger than Nalen, and Nails has one year left.
