Default Portis off to see Dr. James Andrews

Heard on the local news, Channel 9, that it might be serious but no one knows.

http://washingtontimes.com/sports/20...0920-7695r.htm

Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis missed the team's offseason practice Wednesday and Thursday to have his knee examined by team consultant Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.

Director of sports medicine Bubba Tyer said Portis has patella tendinitis in the knee. Portis missed half of last season with shoulder and hand injuries, but has not missed any time in his career with lower-body ailments.

Portis, who has rehabilitated his offseason surgeries in Miami and Northern Virginia, complained of soreness on Tuesday.

"He had some soreness in the knee, but he described that he could run and work out on it and it would be fine the next day," coach Joe Gibbs said. "This week, it bothered him after the workout day so we decided to have it looked at."

Gibbs said the tendinitis didn't develop because Portis was working out too often and too hard. He has been limited in the offseason practices as his shoulder and hand recover.

Tyer wouldn't guess on how long Portis would be held from running.

"He has to get some therapy, strengthen his quadriceps, stretch his hamstring and he'll be fine," Tyer said. "We had it looked at to make sure it was OK and we think we're OK."

Dr. James Andrews is the guy a lot of major league pitchers go and see when they've got potentially serious arm trouble.

Portis can't handle the load of 350 carries. He would be better off to the 250 range.

Bummer for Portis and all the Skins fans who still think they got the best of the deal.

I remember a skin fan telling me Portis would get 10 thousand yards in 8 years.

In all fairness, DWill reminded me of Portis how they both played bigger than their size. Gibbs has worked him like a rented mule. As noted, he's not a 350 carry back. Out of school, he was considered a third down back. If it's tenonitis, which I had in my elbow from pitching at a young age, the only thing you can do is rest it. I liked Clinton, but we certainly came out of that well. Basically, the food chain eventually landed both our starting CB's.

He'll always have his painfully unfunny comedy sketches.

He's got 6400 in 5 years but started breaking down last year. If that knee just needs a little rest, he should get 10K in 10.

There is a reason that average career life span of RB in the NFL is around 3 years

Portis is/was a great RB. But in reality I don't see how anyone can even make a pretense that wsh got the better end of that trade. even if it would have been baily portis straight up.
