'He's the worst scum of the Earth' 10:53 AM MST on Thursday, May 17, 2007 By Karla Barguiarena / KHOU-TV News It was behind door 518 at a Galveston motel room where the unimaginable happened: A father put his two-month-old daughter in the microwave and turned it on. Manager says man calmly called for help after microwaving baby Last Thursday, Joshua Mauldin, 19, was alone in the motel with his baby when he called for help. “The father called down here, asked us to call 911, claimed that the child had a bad sunburn and was bleeding,” hotel manager James Marx said. Marx said he didn’t seem distraught at all. Mauldin later told police it wasn’t a sunburn, but that he had accidentally spilled boiling water on the child. Then his story changed again. Also online Joshua Mauldin's MySpace page (Warning: Contains offensive material) “The first time, he tripped,” Galveston Police Sgt. Annie Almendarev said Wednesday. “Then he said, no, he was drinking it and spilled it. There were just too many inconsistencies. He just couldn’t keep his stories straight.” A tip then led investigators to the hotel room’s microwave, where they discovered the baby had been placed inside. Mauldin then confessed, saying stress had driven him to burn his child. “There was no expression. There was no expression at all. No remorse,” Almendarev said. The baby girl was rushed to Shriners Hospital, where she’s undergone two skin graft surgeries and is in critical but stable condition. She suffered severe burns to the left side of her face and left hand. “I’ve been doing this for a lot of years and actually it brought tears to my eyes,” Galveston Police Sgt. Annie Almendarev said. “The baby is burned on the left side here and it’s just really bad. Her hand is so swollen – if you’ve ever touched something hot you know you get that big boil on your hand – it looks like she’s holding a ball in her little bitty hand. It was just heartbreaking.” Investigators believe the child was in the microwave for ten to 20 seconds. 11 News Behind this door, the unthinkable happened: Joshua Mauldin put his daughter in the microwave and turned it on. “I’m sitting there looking at the pictures and I’m sitting there looking at him, and there’s nothing I could really do about it but just keep my composure,” Almendarez said. Mauldin had checked into the hotel last week along with his baby, his wife and his mother. Police said he came to Galveston from Arkansas in search of a job as a minister. “He’s the worst scum of the earth. I can’t … It makes you want to have cameras in the rooms,” Marx said. At the time of the incident, Mauldin’s wife and mother were reportedly picking up dinner at a nearby restaurant. According to police reports, he told investigators God ordered him to go to Galveston. Mauldin was being held in the Galveston County Jail facing felony charges of injury to a child. His bond was set at $250,000. Prosecutors said, if convicted, he could face anywhere from five to 99 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. |

As a father of a small child myself - I am dumbfounded with rage
I cant even comprehend how a father could possibly do that. Stress? Please, stress effects everybody. No sane individual would possibly find microwaving an infant to be stress relief. Clearly the guy is mentally ill. No pity - string his ass up! excuse me while I puke |

Wow. Just, wow. That literally made my stomach lurch. I just can't imagine what it would take for a human to do that. Especially having the perspective of a parent of a baby about that age - she is just so reliant on us. And she trusts us unconditionally. We are literally her world, period. To take that stewardship and so thoroughly abuse it is just unimaginable. I would have no issues with them putting him away and never letting him out. There are some things that can't be fixed in a person.
You know, I sometimes have sympathy for people who abuse their babies. I know that sounds terrible, but every parent has had situations in the middle of the night where you're exhausted, and the baby is screaming, and you're just not thinking right. I have never hit my children, but I think I was close to it a few times - especially with our first one. But this? It's not like it's losing it and smacking the child, is it. It's sadistic, cruel, and premeditated. There is something irreparably broken in a person to be able to do that. I wouldn't see locking him up for the rest of his life as punishment. Do you keep a lion in a cage to punish him? No, you keep him there so that he won't hurt people. I don't see sickness like this any differently. If he suffers in the process, then so be it. |

I'm with Hogan. Take out the oven racks, stuff him in an oven and turn on the self cleaning cycle. If he's a fat pig, just have an open pit with a spit.

This is why the death penalty shouldn't be reserved solely for 1st degree murder. In fact he should be ordered to recieve the same treatment. He should be microwaved but kept alive and then everyonce in while taken back to the microwave and cooked up again. This makes me completely sick. If I was the responding officer I would have been kicked of the force because he would be leaving that hotel in an ambulance himself. Sick ****.

Footstepsinhismouth already said on another thread that he only posted this because, in his twisted mind, he's trying to further race relations in this country. Somehow, by exploiting this child's agony, Footy's teaching all the snivelling racists on this board a lesson.
Personally, I think his momma put too much oxygen into the womb when he was a fetus and now we're all paying the consequences. |

After reading the Vick thread, I bet Mike is berating his cousin because he didn't think of this in the first place to destroy the evidence.
And yes this dude should get the chair...the only thing I am stumped by is how big was the microwave?....I'd have to literally cram a newborn in the ones that I have ever had in a hotel. |

How anyone could do something like that is beyond comprehension. Poor baby... may she recover and be put in the care of a responsible adult.

What gets me is his claim of being a minister. No religious, god fearing, GOOD person would even entertain this kind of thought, let alone actually act on it. Man the image of that poor baby in there just makes me physically sick.

I happened to have my 3 month old granddaughter over when I read this. It literally brought tears to my eyes. I'm with Blueflame, hopefully she will go on to live with a person who is responsible and loves her regardless of the stress.
Put his a** in prison. They'll take care of him. They don't like that sh** |
