Default Nique's Journal/Blog Entry May 15th: Service and Community

Service and Community

May 15th, 2007 - 9:10am by domonique_foxworth

I’ve done a lot of community stuff this past week. I went to the Boys and Girls Club Gala on Saturday. It was an amazing experience. It was just amazing to hear how much promise the kids have. And how much the money and time that’s contributed actually goes to use, because sometimes you feel like when you’re giving to charities you don’t know what really happens.

But just seeing the kids who received awards give speeches and then they had dances and performances and they just lit up. That was just a great experience on Saturday.

I was there with Cindy Galloway-Kellogg, and she’s been amazing for me. And that’s something that’s been important to me is getting into the community. She’s been amazing just setting up opportunities for me — not being too pushy, but letting me do as much as I can.

On Monday I ended up going to Jeff Shoate’s son’s school for an assembly. Myself and Champ, Curome, Steve Cargile — we went over there and did a whole program for them about health and sports and education. And that was really exciting. Shoate asked us to do it.

After that I went to a Boys and Girls Club meeting about the Darrent Williams Teen Center they’re putting up. I plan on being just as involved in that as I can, and actually maybe teaching some programs with the teens. Maybe a writing class or something like that since I enjoy writing so much. I’ll be able to pass that on to those kids.

After the meeting I ended up staying down there and playing basketball and playing games with the kids until like 8:00 at night. It’s just fun to be around those kids. I was pretty much playing point guard — just distributing the rock. I saw some of the kids from the program. You get close to these kids and are really vested in their success.

Today actually John Lynch’s foundation is having their Salute the Stars luncheon and I’m going to that. So, I guess that’s the theme of this week is service and community.

I don’t think people take into account how much we actually enjoy doing it. At least I can speak for myself and a couple of other players — I know John and Champ, some of the bigger name guys, and I know Dre’s done some things in the short time he’s been here. We really enjoy doing that.

I think we all accept the responsibility of being role models, and accept the responsibility that comes with being in the spotlight. I mean, I definitely do. I welcome the challenge of giving that 100% positive role model to young kids. And not only being a role model, it’s going out and participating hands-on. Not only just giving money and hoping they do the right thing with it. You’ve got to go in there and work with it.

But this Darrent Williams Teen Center is going to be my new passion, I think. I’m really excited about that. Cindy’s been talking about ways to raise money, because right now it’s just an idea. Supposedly it will be up by next January. They already have some funding, but they’re waiting on the state. So all you readers can write a letter to your state congressman or whatever to get it straight. And buy the Broncos license plates, too, because that money goes to the center.

You can drive by the teen center one day and say, “My 30 bucks went to that right there.”

I don't think many people understand how much work some of these guys do in the community. They should be applauded for that as much as for their football skills.

awesome stuff.

I love this team, they are just all class. That DW Teen Center is a great idea, I hope it works out well for Denver.
