Default Steve Cargile: Who is this mystery man?

Practice squad phenom who worked his way onto the roster through good special teams play. Now they are considering using him in certain nickle packages as a fourth linebacker/safety. He was signed before camp, so I never got to see him practice or play.

Mason is talking about him a bit:
http://blog.denverbroncos.com/mason/...steve-cargile/

All of Steve Cargile’s expectations for the first year of his Broncos career changed forever in Arizona last month.

He arrived in Denver in November as a practice-squad signee, looking merely to make enough of an impression during the mid-week sessions to make a run at the 53-man roster next year.

… Assistant head coach Jim Bates expounded on the experiment of using safety Steve Cargile at weakside linebacker — which was in part due to his success on special-teams coverage units late last year. “It’s important that we’re able to fill our two-deep (roster) and get quality special teams guys,” Bates said. “He has the intelligence to play two positions.” …

“If I can stay here, get to learn under these guys like I’ve been doing, just keep on working hard and let the coaches see what I can do,” he said just after joining the practice squad, “then hopefully I can set myself up for next year to actually compete.”

Everything accelerated in December, when the Broncos promoted him to the 53-man roster, which led to a promotion to the active roster in time for the Dec. 17 win over Arizona, where he led the team in special-teams tackles and took away the unit’s boxing-gloves trophy handed to the player of the week on the kicking and coverage units. He then played on special teams in the two games that followed. The December contests represented the first regular-season action in a career that began on Dallas’ practice squad in 2004.

special teams scrub who is getting a lot of attention because he is getting reps at WLB which may mean he becomes third string WILL!

I remember he made one huge hit last season. Beyond that...not much. Maybe the guy just needs a chance.

The staff likes him and we have one of the most proven set of coaches here maybe ever. Special Teams, Defense and of Course Shanahan; What a bright set of football minds. If they like what he can do, then I do too.

I cant argue with that. Im really hoping this team does well this year. Mainly, i want them to be consistent throughout.

I wan them to be consistent in the last part of the season. I'm tired of our team starting out hot and then wearing down. Hopefully we're a more physical and powerful team.

Well, I wouldn't want them like Oakland, who consistently suck.

He was "in on it" quite a bit, and contributed a lot in the ST department. I thought he stood out, and I think he's worth a roster spot.

I don't think so. This kid caught my eye last year and it wasn't during training camp, but in the heat of a playoff run.

You're forgetting that he's already worked his way up from the practice squad to the roster, seen the field, and done well with the chances he was given. That's far different than an undrafted rookie getting hyped in camp.

I think we'd all love to see that. However, with our past history and our tough 2nd half schedule, I think we will be lucky to finish 10-6 this year. Next season will be much closer to honing in on our championship window, imo.

No, he made the team after camp. They liked him enough to play him in the regular season. That they liked him that much suggests he's more than "camp fodder."
