Default Study on Denver Pro Sports Team's Charity Giving...Cool Read

I guess this won't be nearly as much fun as chortling over another Vick=Satan or Pac Man gets a traffic ticket thread but I thought it might appeal to a few people getting tired of constantly hearing nothing but bad news on this board so I did a little checking for something positive...

According to the Sports Philanthropy Project, at least 22 NBA and 37 NFL players currently have charitable foundations set up for giving back to the community. I also ran across this and thought it was interesting. (this is a PDF file)

http://www.naccouncil.org/pdf/ARNOVA...fer%20Wade.pdf

The title of the study, Understanding Sports Philanthropy: The Case of Denver Sports Teams is a 2005 paper by a CU @ Denver assistant prof...and looks at the community philanthropy work being done by the Denver area pro teams...the Rockies are omitted from the report at the present time due to some snag over permission to publish. Specific info on all the major sports league programs is available but I've noted only the NFL programs and the indiviual Denver area teams specific charities. This is an interesting read but I'll sumarize just the most relevant parts that detail at least $73 million in charitable giving by the Broncos, Nuggets and Avs, not counting what players give on their own through other charities:

The NFL participates in three major umbrella programs made availble to indiviudal franchises, the One World Educational Classroom, the United Way program, and the Super Bowl and Pro Bowl events-based outreach programs. they are grouped as follows...

I was at an Avs game in their 10th season where they handed out 10 Million in one night. - Ten million dollar checks to ten local organizations. There were a couple of other philanthropic entities involved - and Joe Sakic. If you want to look at an exemplary athlete you don't have to go much further than Super Joe.

None of this means anything unless you consider how athletes rank against the general public in charity giving, though, right?

Obviously, we better factor in financial wherewithal and circumstances of birth while we're at it.

Bonus points will be awarded for tangential links to important looking pdf files.

Unless it is misidentified in this summary, there are additional charities supported by the Broncos. They have committed $250,000 to a group I work with that provides health care to those that can not afford it. I think people would be very surprised to see how many of the players do charitable work in the community - many preferring to do it without publicity. This is one reason I get very angry about the bad apples in the league and how their actions taint the good that the majority does.

The summary only breaks down major divisions of charitable giving by the teams. Bowlen's foundation for example made numerous grants to dozens of different organizations, but it looks like the paper didn't break it down further than naming the number of such grants.

I'd also bet that this doesn't cover the many individual contributions that players make like Rod Smith's sickle cell blood drives and whatnot.
