Default OT: Job Help

Hey I am looking for some advice and I know this board is really good about giving their two cents on just about everythig so I figured this was the perfect place to come.

Ok so heres the situation. I live/lived in Greensburg, KS where a huge tornado hit and wiped out the town. So I was a teacher there and when I hear this I jump on the internet to apply for jobs around the state thinking that there is no way that the school will be up and running. So I get a job interview at this really nice school which pays about 5000 more a year to teach at. Good location near Wichita, but then I find out that they plan on opening the school next year. So here is the problem. I just don't know whether or not I should take it. I would feel bad leaving Greensburg in their time of need and I want to rebuild, but I also was renting a house so I wouldn't have the money to build a new one and live there. But I feel that I should take the Wichita area job because I am getting married this summer and I want my fiancee to be happy and if I take the job near wichita it gives her a better chance at landing a job(she is a teacher too)and we wouldnt have to live in a FEMA trailer for a year. We just can't be for sure on jobs for her or how long the school will last. Families might leave and force the school to close. I just don't know what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, We "feel you pain"...IMO, get a couple jobs and find a house to buy. Get the Witchita job. I wish I could say that isn't in tornado alley, but it's a moderately small city.

I would take the job and bid your time and eat Raman Noodles I guess. It's a nice minitown and you just need to ride out the storm so to speak. Perhaps you could tutor but I dunno if that pays anything.

I'm not in your shoes. I would move there and gut it out till the school opens. They probably will put the school on a short track after Greensberg, but I dunno.

I think you survived an amazing thing there. I would take the job in Wichita but also look at the cost of living and see if that is actually a pay raise or not. Unless I was born there I would not have any issues packing up and moving on. You have a lot of factors to consider. I am sure you get some good advice.

What are some of the experiences that you are going through up there? How is FEMA treating you? I bet most people don't even know some of the things that you are going though. Could you share some of your impressions on these things so that we could have a better idea? There are several teachers on this board that do post. Some of them might be able to share in working through this. What grade do you teach? Are they providing you compensation to stay in Greensburg? What is the morale like of the people there? Is plenty of food and water? Did you get to meet the President orany dignataries?

Blessings come in all sorts of disguises. Even a tornado. When you experience a life altering event there is no guilt in assessing your situation and looking at what opportunities are available to you.

Thank you and your fiance for being teachers and for wanting to continue to be one. I'm not so sure where you do that is important, just that you do it with honesty and integrity.

So ask yourself, would you and the fiance have considered a location move to improve your situation before the tornado? Is it an event which means you cannot consider those options since it occurred?

Sorry to hear about the trouble.

I would look out for you & yours 1st & take the job.

You were not a homeowner so I would not be concerned about moving on. If you were a large property owner who was on boards in the community it would be one thing. They can find teachers.

One thing I have learned over the years is that everyone can be replaced. even me.

I admire your willingness to help rebuild, but you have to look out for your future and the future of your upcoming marriage. You know the good people of Greensburg and the surrounding communities will do whatever they can to rebuild, so I don't feel that you're leaving them high and dry. In fact, I heard an interview with the mayor of Greensburg on the radio. He said that he wants to rebuild Greensburg better than it was before. They'll be fine and you'll be fine with your new job.

BTW, you said it was "near Wichita". Where is it, exactly? I know the Wichita area very well...

I think it's very unusual that teaching would now suddenly become such a dangerous job. The recent news out of Boulder brought that to mine. Who would have imagined that teaching could be so difficult?

I was going to advise you to consider Colorado for a location to come to because things really aren't that bad there. I know City and County of Denver is always looking for substitute teachers. You can sub there for awhile until you get back on your feet. Why not? You get a chance to see the Broncos training camp and maybe meet some new friends. Large urban areas are good places to get your footing. In every opportunity there is risk so be careful what you wish for.

Thanks for all the help. FEMA has been awesome and the support from the government and everything has been great so far. From what I hear they are very commited to rebuilding. I didn't get to mee the president yesterday I was too busy cleaning things up and getting all of my salvagables out. I have it all cleaned out now so the house is going to be bulldozed. The moral of the people in town is actually pretty high. Most people I have talked to feel that they can rebuild, but there are also some who question how it can possibly be done. The new job is in Valley Center which is a very good district so I am leaning towards that right now. I was semi-looking before the tornado so that my fiancee could find a job and the area around Greensburg just doesn't really allow for that. All of the volunteers and things like that are awesome. I just want to know what kind of federal aid they are going to give to everyone in town that needs to rebuild before I decide exactly how happy I am with them, but so far I think they are doing about as well as can be expected. There is plenty of food and water so far. As far as compensation for staying I don't know about that stuff yet. I have been so busy trying to clean up I havent heard much about all of that. Oh yeah I teach the fourth grade.

I am happy for you.

The situation was a lot different in New Orleans where FEMA is still a four letter word. Even the LRH promises have not been fulfilled. I hope we are able to learn from the mismanagement and improve the situation for people in disasters that follow.

I understand your struggle with what to do....I had a similar decision in New Orleans and choose a compromise. I am part of Nola rebuilding and still have my home there; however, I needed to make money as well which wasn't going to happen in New Orleans. So I went where the job was and now live a bi-coastal life between Los Angeles and Nola.

There is no better feeling than rebuilding an area that you love that was devestated...be a part of it even if you work in Wichita.

First off...God Bless and Good luck. Second...take the job and keep quite about maybe going back to Greensburg later. You have to look out for yourself and your looming family with your AW.

This might be a little blunt But the real question is "IF the tornado hadn't hit, would you and your fiancee have stayed in Greensburg" IF the answer is NO then take the new job, if the answer is YES then think what you need to do to rebuild. You just been through very traumatic event, don't let that storm mess with you more then once.

Good luck whatever you do and keep safe.

Yeah I kind of have been thinking this way also, we were looking before the storm but the storm just kicked the search into high gear. So I think that it would just be better for me and my future wife if we go somewhere that she can be happy. I don't want to even think about her doing nothing all day while sitting in a FEMA trailer and then I get home. That might be a recipe for disaster.

I think you have your answer. Right now you're feeling a little bit of survivor's guilt, that very normal after something like this. And doesn't mean that you can not come back later in life.

Take out what you went through in Greensburg like elsid13 said. Put both cities as if they were equal and see what you feel. I am sorry you went through what you did but any job that improves your standing should always be considered. Now if it is at the expense of loved ones then thats a different story but it sounds like your wife will like the move closer to Wichita anyways. I say move but its easy for outsiders to say that.

I would think the school would have quite a few less students next year because many people will move on so there should be expectations that many teachers won't come back and won't be needed.

For what it's worth, a lot of people affected by Hurricane Katrina migrated from that area to start anew all over the country. There's nothing wrong or shameful with picking up and starting over. You're concerned about your significant other and that's great. You should be talking to her rather than worrying about what "we" think! I'm glad you're okay.

It's all about you and your family. Take the job. Sorry to hear about your current community, but if you had thought of looking for new jobs because of the disaster, you mind is already made up. Take the job & move on. It will be better for you and your family.
