Royal is pretty hot for a 50 something socialist.

Anyway, I am happy with the result.

Love the fact that the french can not figure out a why a 35 hour work week and subsidizing every sector of economy mean high employment and lack luster GDP growth. I highly doubt Sarkozy has successful term

This new French President wants closer ties with USA. This is a good result for France and is also good for USA.

The new President wants to curb social welfare, tighten immigration, end the 35 hour work week and let people work as much as they want to earn more, and make closer ties with the USA. I think he could do pretty good.

Before you get too excited, remember that the French right-wing is still to the left of our Democratic Party.

From a political standpoint, Chirac is more right-wing than Sarko.

I will wait and see just as I did w/the new lefty congress we elected. Strengthen ties w/the us? We will have to see how the majority in france take this. We would need to do something to get back in thier good graces for it to be accepted by the French citizenry

I just think it's cool that not one issue in the French election had to do with evolution, abortion, private lives, family values, gays or prayer in public places AND more than 80% of the entire population actually got out and voted.

Yeah, the French suck alright ...seems to me we could actually learn a lot from them.

Yep. 85.5% voter turnout. That's humiliating.

Good for them. As much as I pretty much despise the French, it seems like they had a good informed turnout, better than our usually 50% turnout with the majority voting for or against a guy because of the most stupid reasons imaginable, mostly not for or against any real particular issue.

I think I saw somewhere where he said that France was a friend to America. Good news there.

Royal is so far to the left there is no distinction between Sarko and a moderate.

Unfortunately, the political machine in the United States cranks out career politicians who drive many people away from their civic duties. I'm hoping one day we elect someone who isn't part of the political establishment. I'm sick of governors and Washington politicians being the only ones with a legitimate chance at the presidency.

So you are contending the French don't have career politicians and that
is why they have such high turnouts? Do you think Sarkozy was a sheep
farmer before he got elected president?

wow I'm pretty amazed that the french election is a subject that interest american people.
I'm really happy about this.

About Sarkozy, I don't know in fact, He is sometimes brutal and here we are afraid that he could create a real tension in our society but we'll see. 85 % of people expressed themselves and it's great for a democraty.

I'm happy that he talked about USA in his first speech. He said that USA is our friend and it's a good sign I think. But he said too that a friend can be in disagree specially about Kyoto treaty.

If you have some specific questions, i'll be pleased to respond.

No, I'm contending that the political system has driven Americans away from the polls. It WOULD be a good study as to why the French accept career politicians as leaders and Americans don't.

French only have 45 million people you can't compare them to USA 300 million when it comes to voter turnout. The French this year were drawn to the polls because they are sick of all the immigration and want it stopped. They are worried France is losing it's Frenchness.

Americans don't vote because they life is good for the most part. I bet the next election has a really high voter turnout though because of the war.

in france, we always vote on sunday.

I really hope that the election will permit a return to normal relation with the USA.
I think that Sarkozy will have some hard days when he will try to reform our social system, but maybe i'm wrong...we'll see.

Just a precision , we are 61 millions of people , not 45.

I wonder if our voting percentages would go up if we voted on the weekend, rather than a ****ing Tuesday? Ya think?
