Default You gotta love Mel Kiper...

No matter what draft he covers, he ALWAYS manages to get John Elway's name in there as a comparison. The ESPN crew was talking about Jamarcus (don't call me Tank) Russell. He said Russell had "Elway like ability" although the guy's a pocket passer (he was referring to the throwing ability.) Then they were talking about the wideout that everyone had as No#1 in the draft. Kiper said John would always rate highest, but this guy has a chance to be a special player (Burman asked him if he'd ever rated any player so high).

John is clearly Mel's eternal man crush.

If you want to compare arms, Cutler's back foot 65 yarder to Walker qualifies.

Mel gave John Elway the highest grade he has ever given out.

I think "on his knees" is about the only way Boller could have been a starting QB for so long. Only he and Billick know for sure, but thats my guess.

He did it...it was captured on video and I've seen it. It was on one knee for the record.

Mel Kiper has refered to John Elway as the only guy to live up to the hype.

You could also add Manning in to that as well.

For the record, Russel's throw is from one knee as well. Speaking of which, from one knee, I can watch football for just over 17 minutes...I think that's got to be some kind of record.

For most people, throwing a football 60 yards through a goal post is hard enough. Try doing from your knees! For Kyle Boller, it's a cinch.

"It started a year or two ago when I was messing around with buddies on my team and decided to see how far I could throw while on my knees," Boller said. "Somebody bet me lunch that I couldn't throw the ball through the goal posts from the 50-yard line while on my knees. So I got down on my knees, chucked it, and let's just say he took me to lunch the next day. Ever since then, I've done it to show off my arm strength, and I never heard of anyone else doing it.

"I did it again during my Pro Day when a coach asked me about it. So in front of all the scouts and some media, I went out there, got on my knees, even tossed some grass in the air to show there was a slight breeze in my face, and I just reared back, twisted my hips a little bit, and let it go and it came out nice. I actually got a little standing ovation."

Boller was such a workout warrior. Oh, look at my arm strength, I can throw a ball 60 yards on my knees! Well, ya know what, that doesn't matter during the game!

Manning was considered a lead footed, mechanical stiff. Everyone was all over Ryan Leaf's jock...which I never understood. To me the guy looked goofy, dumb and soft (the only weights he lifted were sandwiches). Yet the Manning/Leaf debate raged. And oh yes, Leaf was also 'another Elway.' Cripes, its getting ridiculous...any lug who has an arm and can halfway move is now an 'Elway.' Leaf had the athleticism of a hippo on crack. Maybe the NFL needs to break out some old game films...people these days seem clueless, and I think their memories are fading badly.

(insert name here) is another 'Elway.'

various commentators have named (for some reason or another)

Vick
Leaf
Tim Couch (believe it!!)
Carr
Rattay
Big Ben
Steve McNair
Young (of the Titans)
J. Russell (flavor of the week)
Eli Manning
Peyton Manning (?)
Cutler
Akili Smith

being black gets additional points for 'athleticism' whether true or not.

being white gets reduced points for 'athleticism' whether true or not.

guys who play with a different style from Elway are also compared. You know, the logic of comparing peanuts with tree trunks!

I've often wondered what will happen one day when half the league has guys who both run and throw...will they ALL be #7? He's one prolific assed dude!

Jay Cutler cut to the root of this when he said you could pretty much take any first rounder and compare him to John. That's the only sensible statement I've heard in awhile.
