After the death of Darrent Williams, Bronco owner Pat Bowlen was very public about finding guys who wouldn't be attracted to Denver's seedier elements. He wanted guys who would heed the warnings of when and where to be out at night.
So the Broncos essentially spend this year's draft and a part of next year's draft on two players from Florida with checkered pasts - just the sort of guys you could picture in one of those "wrong place, wrong time" scenarios or dreading the commish's "third strike" rule. Sure, we don't need a full team of Boy Scouts but isn't Bowlen kind of asking for trouble by drafting Moss and Thomas, not to mention going out of their way to trade up for them? |

How do you respond to this? Shanahan takes a calculated risk, Bowlen is about winning Super Bowls. End of story.
You don't pass up on what you consider to be a smart draft pick because you're afraid they might get shot at. Perhaps the third strike rule is a factor, but if that's so, where was this thread when we traded for Travis Henry? I really don't think there's a need to worry. |

All Moss did was smoke weed. A bunch of other players admitted to that also. Some schools would never go after players like Florida did. Some schools cover things up some don't. Neither Moss or Thomas have done anything where you say man what a horrible person. They are just normal kids that don't always do the right thing. Some kids get caught and some don't but it doens't make Moss anymore a risk then Calvin Johnson who also admits he smoked weed. It's good though these 2 are under the microscope, no way they think they can get away with anything.

I'll respond by saying that neither of the guys you mentioned had actual trouble with the law. Neither have been arrested for anything, their issues were with the University. I think Bowlen was more referring to guys who are habitually on the police blotter (ala Pacman Jones & Chris Henry).

The only way this is a risk is if the offenders are un repentant.

And hey, at least their character issues aren't connected with stomping on other players' legs... Meriweather......

Pat talks a lot .... but Mike's in charge.
![]() Besides - and I've posted this three or four times but nobody has yet said 'good point Buff' - FLORIDA A.D. JEREMY FOLEY IS A CLOSE PERSONAL FRIEND OF MIKE SHANHAN!!! They go waaaaay back. Mike would've never traded up for BOTH without Foley giving him some positive inside info on these kids. |

Until somebody posts "good point, BroncoBuff," (without adding a "but" right after), I'm going to post my Jeremy Foley-Mike Shanahan connection post in progressively larger and larger fonts, every 12 hours.
My demands are non-negotiable. |

OK, when are we getting Goliath who was arrested stuck in a cellar window?
To be fair I dunno why he was busted. It just sounds funny to me. Like Santa stuck in the chimney. I remember a burgler that had to be hoised out of a shimney. Freakin idiot. There was a youtube of a burgler falling thru a syrofoam ceiling. Last edited by watermock; 04-30-2007 at 03:48 AM.. |

I am going to laugh when sooooo many Bronco fans eat crow. We got an absolute steal with Thomas in the 4th round. Mark my words on both these guys. They have been roomates, played D-line together, and both get fresh starts in the NFL with a very well respected and classy organization. THe chemistry of them working together is already there and they will also be playing along side another Florida Alum with Big Money.
Look for big things to come with our D-Line. |

Florida is "Classy" now? I picked them to win the NC at the begining of the year but that isn't a squeaky clean program. I'll leave it at that.
That place is all about winning. The fact we traded three draft picks for someone that managed to get kicked out of Florida is creepy. Last edited by watermock; 04-30-2007 at 04:05 AM.. |

In all the coverage regarding Darrent's death, I must have missed this. I sure hope Bowlen was careful to point out that what happened to Darrent could have happened to anybody, and wasn't a case of him being attracted to seedier elements? It was New Year's morning in LoDo for crying outloud.

Actually, most people don't frequent strip bars and get into arguments with crip members. WTF are you talking about? "Anyone" is a pretty serious reach.
I'm not saying he deserved it at all, but damn...there is event after event after event in these strip clubs. And you don't think Strip Clubs invite a "seedier element"? WTF. What planet are you on. Last edited by watermock; 04-30-2007 at 04:10 AM.. |

I would never go to a strup bar late, just for happy hour, and with my GF...she was hit on by the owner. heh.
Diamon Cabaret I think. I dated a gir who was a dancer at the front line Vegas clubs. She made 7k a week for 20 hours a week. Told her some crazy story that I was going to make her an executive secretary. It didn't last long. Heh. |

BTW, Buff, doesn't Shanahan know some people in Florida that he might have gotten some inside info from?

Texan...that post pretty much implied that Darrent was out looking for trouble or that he had a history...which wasn't the case. Teams will be a lot better off if they draft by talent and hire people to work with these guys and teach them the value of team and falling into the system. You think Pacman jones actually buys the team concept in Tennesee or listens to Jeff Fisher...I highly doubt it. And Marvin Lewis has coached guys who have had issues and never dealt with them the entire time he has been in the league going back to Baltimore. Look at how few problems have come from NE, because the players buy into the concept of team and community to win games. I don't think that was a concept that was accepted in Dallas when the coke heads played there. It isn't easy to hand a 20 yr old 1, 2, 3 or more million and expect every one of them to be a perfect citizen.

D-Will wasn't at a strip club. He was at a birthday party for Kenyon Martin of the Nuggets. It was new years eve. It was random, D-Will didn't do anything wrong here.
