Default OT: Need help from the Computer Whiz's around here

So my daughter and I went skiing at Big Sky yesterday and I got some kick ass clips of her skiing on my camera phone. I then emailed the clips to my email address, however it has some weird ass .file name and wont play on my computer. Does anyone know how to convert it to a file that will play?

Need to know the extension before any help can be offered.

You may just need a codec for it, or you may need the camera's software installed on your computer or there may be conversion software that will convert it to a more typical video format for PCs.

But without the actual extension, I cant really offer any help.

Jam the phone in the DVD drive. Hell if I know. I'm sure you have to convert the file tho. or something they said.

like most win pc's, he may not have his pc set up to view file extensions...

go to Start Menu ....Click on Tools, Folder Options, click the View tab, and then make sure "hide extensions of known file types" is unchecked

The short version of the answer is to first turn on the file extensions in Windows, so you can see what type of file it is.

Once you know that, run a Google search for "convert -file extension- to MPG." There are a number of video format conversion programs available on the Web, ranging in cost from free to roughly $90. The most common price point is $29 or $29.95. If you can, look for a program that offers the ability to handle and convert as many file formats as possible. That'll give the ability to also convert other video formats in the future, if you want or need to. (You can convert the file to formats other than MPG if you want. I just picked that one out of the air at random as an example.)

Two more things to keep in mind as you hunt video conversion software...

* Many of the programs have documentation and website text written in "English as a second language." You'll have to experiment more with the program itself to see how the various features work. With some of the programs, even the dialog boxes and error messages are incomplete or make no sense at all.

* How well the video conversion programs run on your computer depends directly on your machine's horsepower. Some programs won't run at all on low-powered or older PCs. Other programs will hog so many of your CPU cycles that you can't do anything else at all while the converter is running. If you've got a choice, load the converters on the machine with the fastest CPU and the most RAM available to you.

* Figuring out which codecs you have and which ones you need can be a major pain in the ass. I've found this program, GSpot 2.70, to be very useful. It analyzes video files and tells you what codecs were used, and whether or not those codecs are present on your system. I've used GSpot mostly with AVI files. The website page indicates GSpot will help identify other kinds of video files, but might not fully support them for codec identification. (This site is just a good one, anyhow, with a lot of information and a great archive of codec files to download.)

m.
