A New -- and Necessary -- Beginning

Domonique Foxworth had quite a bit to say as he met the media on Monday. Watch in Real or Windows Media Player.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- It was only a couple of hours past breakfast, but the workouts of Monday morning were enough to make some Broncos lose their collective lunch, reported Domonique Foxworth as he addressed the local press corps following the first offseason conditioning session.

"If you go out there (on the field), you can see a couple of people's breakfasts and lunches," Foxworth said. "None of mine, though, fortunately. I kept mine down."

But for Foxworth, April 2 is not so much a beginning of working out as it is a continuation. He offered himself a one-week pause after the season ended before resuming his regimen of "three or four" workouts per week.

Many of those, however, took place in solitude. His regimen for the next three and a half months will come with his teammates at his side -- and nary a moment too soon in what has been one of the grimmest offseasons in recent memory for any NFL team due to the deaths of cornerback Darrent Williams and running back Damien Nash.

"It's wonderful to be back, to be honest with you," Foxworth said. "It's a little bit of normalcy. It helps to be around players who you know cared about the individual just as much as you did. It's nice, and it wasn't a somber mood at all.

"I think we're all happy to be back and happy to be together, and I think the mourning process goes on for a while."

Another step in the grieving will come when the cornerbacks begin convening for group meetings at organized team activities beginning in mid-May.

"I think it'll be tougher when we go to do team things together and position stuff, and just places where you expect to see him, because in the offseason, you don't expect to see Darrent or Damien too much, but now, when you expect to see them, it's hard," Foxworth said.

"A voice that was always there is not there anymore, so it's painful."

Of lesser concern is forgetting about how last season ended on the field -- with an overtime loss to the San Francisco 49ers in which Joe Nedney ended the Broncos' season with a swing of his leg. That defeat was mostly forgotten hours later after Williams was shot and killed in downtown Denver, but there remains a sting that goes with sitting out the postseason for the first time in four years.

"We're happy to all be here to get the taste from last season out of our mouth as soon as possible," Foxworth said.

Of course, it might be subjugated now by the taste of vomit, but when that is the byproduct of a hard morning's work, it's a much more palatable option than defeat's bitter flavor.

Preseason Slate Set; Broncos Open on MNF

By Andrew Mason
DenverBroncos.com

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- It won't take the Broncos long to make their 2007 Monday Night Football debut.

The Broncos will open the preseason with a Monday night contest at the San Francisco 49ers on Aug. 13. Kickoff will be at 6 p.m. MDT at Monster Park, and the game will air on ESPN.

It will be the Broncos' only nationally televised game in the preseason slate, which was announced Monday afternoon. Denver follows the trip to San Francisco with an excursion to Dallas to face the Cowboys, who are under the direction of new head coach Wade Phillips. That game will take place between Aug. 16 and 20.

Denver makes its home debut for the year the following weekend in the third preseason game, against the Cleveland Browns. That game -- which will likely see the starters play at least half the night -- will take place sometime between Aug. 23 and 27.

The Broncos close out the preseason with a perennial August foe, the Arizona Cardinals. That game will take place sometime between Aug. 31 and Sept. 2.

Notes on the opponents:

WEEK 1 - SAN FRANCISCO: This will be Denver's first preseason game at San Francisco since 2000 and first game of any kind there since 2002 ... Teams last met in the preseason in 2005; Denver won 26-21 en route to a 4-0 preseason ... The 49ers' reappearance on the Broncos' preseason schedule resumes a series that saw the teams play 15 preseason games between 1988 and 2002 (they actually played twice in 1995, but did not meet in 1998). The clubs also met annually from 1968-79 and 1984-86.

WEEK 2 - DALLAS: Is the resumption of an annual preseason series that ran from 1999 through 2001; Denver won two of the games, including a 2001 duel at Texas Stadium ... Could end up being the Broncos' last game at Texas Stadium, as they are not scheduled to meet in the regular season there before the Cowboys move into their new facility in Arlington, Texas ... Teams also met each summer from 1994-96; Denver won two of those three games ... Denver holds a 6-5 edge over the Cowboys in their preseason series.

WEEK 3 - CLEVELAND: Will be the Browns' second trip to INVESCO Field at Mile High; the teams met in the regular season on Dec. 14, 2003 ... Teams have not met in the preseason since 1983, when the Broncos won 19-10 at Mile High Stadium in their only August duel.

WEEK 4 - ARIZONA: Will play for the fourth consecutive preseason and fifth in the last six seasons ... Denver has won the last two preseason games with Arizona and six of the last seven ... Teams met three times in the preseason between 1999 and 2002; the Broncos won all three. The two teams also played each other every August from 1990 through 1994; the Broncos were 2-3 in those games.

« A Return to the Veteran BackupUpstairs, Downstairs »For Openers: Where and With Whom the Season Can Start
The NFL released the nationally-televised games for Week 1 of the year, and for the third consecutive season, the Broncos will open the year out of the coast-to-coast limelight.

For now, however, we can deduce some potential scenarios for the Broncos’ season-opening game.

1. The Broncos can’t face any of the teams whose openers were announced Monday. This rules out starting the season against the San Diego Chargers, Indianapolis Colts or Chicago Bears.

2. The Broncos can only be at home against an NFC opponent. This is because CBS traditionally does not carry any late afternoon games during the second weekend of September, owing to their coverage of the mens’ singles final of the U.S. Open tennis championships. Since the NFL has never scheduled the Broncos for a regular-season game beginning at 11 a.m., this rules out the Broncos’ six home games against AFC foes — three against their division rivals, two against AFC South opponents Tennessee and Jacksonville and one against the Pittsburgh Steelers. This leaves the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings as the only potential opponents for a season-opening home game.

3. The Broncos cannot play a road game against a team in the Mountain or Pacific time zones. Again, this owes to CBS’ U.S. Open coverage. So say goodbye to being the opposition for Lane Kiffin’s first game as head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

This leaves the following possibilities for the Broncos’ Week 1 game:

vs. Green Bay
vs. Minnesota
at Detroit
at Kansas City
at Buffalo
at Houston

The league also announced its Thanksgiving games, and the Broncos learned they will not play on Thanksgiving for the first time since the 2004 season. Christmas Day falls on a Tuesday, meaning the Broncos will not play on one of the two major holidays for the first time since 2003.

WEEK 1 GAMES THAT HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED:

Sept. 6: New Orleans at Indianapolis - NBC - 6:30 p.m. MST
Sept. 9: Chicago at San Diego - FOX - 2:15 p.m. MST
Sept. 9: N.Y. Giants at Dallas - NBC - 6:15 PM MST
Sept. 10: Baltimore at Cincinnati - ESPN - 5 p.m. MST
Sept. 10:Arizona at San Francisco - ESPN - 8:15 p.m. MST

The full schedule will be released in April

Obviously, DWill and Nash still sting.

Cool...I get to see the opener preseason game..they obviously did this because of my mancrush on Cutler. Plus, since August 13th is my sons birthday, all I have to do is get him on his cell and tell him he gets to watch the Broncos. He will be so thrilled.

Co-sign on a new work truck when you can watch the Broncos? The ingrate!

I think they have played here first year after SB. 99 was the last time the Vikes played here.
