That's a good read. Surprised that Jason Taylor only got one nod from the "experts." Odd considering he won the thing last year.

I was pretty suprised at someone's comment on there about Champ playing the "sexier" position over one of the DEs. It seems to me that DEs get a lot more love than CBs... As Kaylore just pointed out even, Champ gets the most votes on there yet the DE won the DPOY.

HITF can you claim this

John Clayton: Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman has emerged as the game's best defender last season.

When this happened and why:

Merriman was suspended for four games last season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy

I think he's just saying that Merriman on steroids is better than these other guys not on steroids.

Anybody else notice that Champ had more tackles than any of these other "best players". Pretty amazing guy.

Call me a homer, but I don't believe he actually took steroids knowingly. Why? Because there's so many other drugs that you can take to get around the system such as HGH. If anything he was suspended because he didn't make sure that whatever he was taking didn't violate the NFL policy.

That being said, Champ plays in the harder position so I concede the fact that he is the better defender.

Someone like Merriman isn't going to get as many tackles as Champ simply because of their different positions. It's like me saying Merriman is better because he has more sacks than Champ.

Weak stuff guys!

Merriman may have been busted but he was still a force AFTER the suspension and MORE drug tests.

Sorry you are going to have to deal with him for a while longer.

I do give props to Champ though. He is without question one of the best NFL players out there.

Yeah, because we all know linebackers don't get a lot of tackles and corners do...oh wait...

Champ gets the nod solely because he's surrounded by **** talent. The Chargers are loaded in comparison.

He was juicing in the off-season and it wasn't out of his system when he got tested. Unless you are arguing he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer. With millions at stake, it would be foolish not make sure what's in his body and what he's taking is legit. Further more, what he was taking is not banned. IIRC, many other players take it...so the idea that he got the one bad sample is ridiculous.

He's cheated pure and simple...but he's smart in the sense that he takes in the off-season and not during the season.

Personally I think these guys should take what they want and drop dead for it, but I am not the decision maker on that.

Would agree there.

Remember when you guys thought Derrick Johnson was going to be as good as Merriman.

I just don't understand how he can get 17.5 sacks in 12 games in the NFL and he was never anywhere near that in college. He's hopped up on something... testosterone levels through the roof.

I love it when people say he didn't knowingly take steroids. In order to get the 4 game suspension... didn't he have to fail more than one test?

So using this line of thinking, with all those much crappier players for offenses to pick on, so many easier players to attack than Champ, he still lead the league in interceptions and was runner up for DPY. You basically made Champ look even better.

And you're an honor-less b****.
