Default Rebuild the D

I may be reading too many of Mediator12's posts, but this really seems like the year to rebuild the D through the draft. Here's my ideal draft, with two trades:

First, keep Al Wilson. Move him to SAM if needed and let him help DJ transition to MLB.

Trades:
1. Trade our 2nd (#60) for a high 4th and a 2nd next year.
2. Package Stephan Alexander and our 3 2nd day picks for an early-mid 4th.

Draft:
1. Jarvis Moss- Tall, rangy pass-rusher with room to grow. A great fit for the new D.

3a. Dan Bazuin- Another pass-rusher for Bates, he was extremely productive in college and would make a nice bookend for Moss. Denver would have the ends they need to run the new scheme.

3b. Josh Gattis- Good size, speed, and athleticism, he can contribute against the run, in pass coverage and on special teams. I like Wendling here, too, but in the end I think Gattis will make more plays in coverage.

4a. Quincy Black- Very fast and athletic, he also weighs 240+. Let him learn from Wilson and Gold for a year before starting next season. He's another guy who can contribute on special teams.

4b. Paul Soliai- A huge DT who can tie up blockers inside. It might take him a year or two to develop, but he could be a force.

Adding these five fills all of the major needs on defense and helps the special teams, as well. I wanted to add a WR or OT, but would rather have the extra pick next year, when the OT class is stronger. I feel next year will be a bit of a down year with the change in defensive schemes and the youth on offense. Denver will probably be picking in the high teens and could package that with the extra 2nd to move into the top-10 for a top LT prospect. That would leave a 2nd, 3rd, two 4ths, a 5th, 6th, and two 7ths to fill out the depth and set up a very bright future in 2008 and beyond.

what is the point in trading away the second rounder?? dont really like either of the trades...alexander and three picks for a fourth rounder?? we could use those to build more oline depth, just like we usually do. plus how many pash rush specialists do you think this team needs? i think spending 21 on pass rush solves that problem and then leave it alone...build depth at DT.

I really think we need two DE's and the depth there this year is just too good to pass up. As for trading the 2nd rounder, I really like Soliai better than any of the DT's in the 2nd-3rd range and I'd rather have the ammunition to move up next year for a top OT. The 2nd trade was based more on my opinion of Black and Soliai. Both could be excellent players in a couple of years and I'd rather have them than a couple of late round lineman (we really don't have room on the roster for more than one OT right now).

I'm no Longhorns fan, but I'd be cool w/ an almost all Texas Day 1.
1-Michael Griffin, S, Texas
2-Tim Crowder, DE, Texas...if we have to trade up a few spots, so be it.
3a-Brian Robison, DE/OLB, Texas...he could fit in either spot. I'd love to try him at OLB and slide DJ inside. Worst case, he is great on special teams.
3b-John Wendling, S, Wyoming...yes, i think we'll need 2 safeties to be ready for '08.
5-Paul Soliai, DT, Utah...If we need to move up to get him, do it. Dude has been on my radar for months. MONSTER who will keep the OL off of our smurfs.
Then a returnman like Steve Breaston or Ryne Robinson.

I like that alot better, but I still have a man crush on Antonio Pittman...Nothing like the Man Love I have for Griffin tho. Going to have to move up in the second for Pittman tho.

After that, spend all 3rd rounders on DL.

Fun read, I don't like the idea of AW at sam though, he gets wiped by blockers enough as it is. There's several late round prospects this year who a prototype sams, i'd like to see us get one. Also, even though he's not quite as big as a typical sam, i really like tim shaw out of penn state.

Never say Never with Denver. I expect that come the 6 round they might take a flyer on RB. It not like Cobbs has shown he should stay on the roster.

On the roster for next year - I see three (3) locks - Henry, MBell and Sapp. That leaves two to three slots open for competition. I know KG is out there, but I don't think he a lock to make the roster.

Remember - Thie first words out of Shanhan's mouth at every press session has been that they must get the offense back into the tope 5 in the NFL. Not all of the coming moves including the draft will be defense.

I'm sure we'll end up with a couple of offensive players, but if it was up to me, I'd concentrate on D. I don't see any offensive needs right now beyond a WR and an OT, and like I said earlier, I'd rather wait for an OT next year.

Ya , after researching it , I would have to agree on taking Wendling instead. Even though Weddle looks to have more versatility in playing different positions including punt & kick off return man, scout.com has him listed as a corner. Wendling has the tools to be a big strong safety for us. He's physical with good size and speed. Fixed that.

At 21 I would be happy with either Griffen or Cariker either way it seems like an imeadiate upgrade. in round 2 I think you look to see who fell and who is available. that said DT should be the pick some one like Crowder out of Texas or even Johnson out of Georgia I think depending on the first the first third round pick will belong to the oppsite. I like the S from wyoming alot. if these pick happened I will pop a cold one and call it a happy draft.

It may be wishful thinking that Doug Free will be there for us at 87. I will keep my fingers crossed and the hot line to Shanny open.
