Need some advice:
What's a good online source for downloading MP3s? I've tried Itunes before and hate it. Haven't tried Napster yet. Hoping to find a place for less that .99 a song. Looked over AllofMP3 but found it a bit shady. What other online services are there that come highly recommended? Thanks! |

I personally use Itunes. I think its a piece of cake. THey have a free download everyweek that got me interested in many new bands and artists.
To answer your question, AOL has something like where you pay a flat rate and get as many as you want. I doubt it has a very good selection, but you can try that if you want. |

Yahoo does for like $75 a year (unlimited). I had over 20,000 songs downloaded on my PC using them until I went all lossless.
I think their inventory is up to about 1.5 million songs. |

ruckus.com
You may have to be a college student for this to work (I am so I have no problem). It is legal and you have to download a special ruckus player off the site. The secret is to download FairUse or a similar decrypting program that will allow you to put the protected windows media files ruckus provides onto your mp3 player. The song selection is tremendous and constantly updated. I'd check it out if you are in college or can get around that part of it. |

I'm surprised you hate Itunes. They have an unmatched selection and the UI & ease of purchase I find to be great. The only downer there is usually the DRM which only allows it to be played on Ipods, unless you burn the music to a CD and rerip it.
But if you don't like DRM in general, then I would really encourage you to just buy CDs. BTW, how's your computer comming along? |

There is this wonderful internet tool called a search engine. Funny thing about these search engines, the offer suggestions, reviews and pricing differences for pretty much any product far more detailed than any answer anyone here is going to give you. |

Aren't you impressed with yourself. While on the topic of search engines do yourself a favor and look up FLAMING A$$HOLE. It will probably lead you back to your own address.

I've been using www.emusic.com
Not a huge selection, but tons of the inde stuff that I love... Spoon, Bloc Party, etc. My favorite part about the site is that the files are straight MP3 -- no DRM licensing to hassle with. For about 10 bucks a month I get 65 songs. |

Geez Alec, chill my friend. The dude gave a few placed he checked out and didn't like and then asked what some people here use. What is so terribly wrong with that?
Personally I don't download music at all. I'm a big time CD buyer and find that usually I end up listening to more songs on a CD then I thought I would. Of course I buy the CD for the few hits that I hear on the radio, but then I usually fall in love with 3 or 4 more. You're always surprised and sometime it takes listening to it a few times and then they grow on you. I've got about 90 GB of MP'3 that I ripped from my own collection. I load 2 GB at a time on my USB drive and plug it right into the face of my deck in my truck and it's the bomb. I love that new deck. No more burning CD's at all. No music skips when going over bumps. Then I take the USB drive out of my truck, take it into work and plug it into my PC and continue listening in style. Love it. |

Thanks for the direction and advice guys. The reason I don't like ITunes is because of the proprietary files. I can't easily burn my own CDs with it. Maybe things have changed? It's been a while since I used it.
I have a HUGE collection of CDs and an even bigger collection of vinyl. The problem is, there's a bunch of songs --here and there-- that I don't have. I'm an old fogey so some of tunes I'm looking for are a bit hard to find. But I'll find a "Greatest Hit" album from some group for which I like one or two songs and I don't want to spend the $10 for two songs I like and then 10 that I don't. I'll check out some of the recommendations. Let me know if ITunes isn't so incompatable any more, too! And, Alec, when your day goes bad and you feel like taking a cyber punch at someone remember: God Loves You. |

I personally find that word of mouth has been superior to search engines when it comes to finding quality things. Search engines are a good place to start, but I'll take experience over ad placement every time. |

Find a torrent program, such as uTorrent.
Then, go to FileMP3.org or Demonoid.com. Sign up, and download. |

Yeah, guys, I don't mind paying for the music. It's just that at a buck a pop, with the list I have, it's going to add up quick and if I can LEGITIMATELY get the songs for cheaper, I will. If not, I'll just sign up for Napster and be done with it.
But, like Taco said, I'm hoping to get some advice from those who have traveled a similar path. On another board, someone suggested mp3stor.com, but it looks extremely similar to allofmp3.com and I'm not sure they're on the up-and-up. If they are, great! They're music is much cheaper. But I don't want to participate in anything shady. I'll be paying via Credit Card and, contrary to many a theist's opinion, some of us atheists DO have a conscience! |
