Being a Bronco fan living out of state, its always been interesting to me to hear how/why someone is a Bronco fan. (especially if they dont have any personal ties to the state.)
I was raised in the great state of Colorado and my father had season tickets from 1981-1990. Some great years there, some tremendous highs and lows My parents were divorced, and my father would use visitation to take me to Bronco games. We would park about 2 miles away, make our way through the surrounding neighborhood - bought kick ass home made burritos from the locals for 2nd half munchies - ate at the Burger King on the hill (Federal Blvd) in front of the stadium and watched the crowd grow. As a young boy; getting to see my dad - being taken to Mile High Stadium and seeing the hoopla of the tailgating, vendors, crowd, crushed peanut shells and spilled beer everywhere, the glorious foot stomping that would blurr your vision and make your blood boil - sights and sounds of NFL Sunday - some of the best memories of my childhood. As result, I will bleed Orange/Blue as long as I live - regardless of where that may be. So how did you get turned onto the Broncos? Obviously if you were raised in Denver it is a part of your DNA - but your comments are still welcome! Last edited by RkyMtnThunder; 03-26-2007 at 06:39 PM.. |

My Dad was born and raised in Denver, and when I was like 8 or so, he told me we were rooting for the guys in orange.
The rest, they say, is history. |

Isn't that like asking why am I human? Why am I a male? Why am I BMF? It's just how it is, it was predestined before I was born!

You need a reason to be a fan of the best organization in pro sports?
Seriously though, They're the home town team. I'm a Denver Broncos fan. If they became the Cheyenne Broncos or the L.A. Broncos I probably wouldn't give a sh*t about them from that point on. Ben |

First football game I ever watched just happened to be "The Drive".
How could you not be a Broncos fan after watching that! |

I moved from England to LA and immediately hated the raiders. Then moved to Denver and found the team that i wanted to root for forever

First game I ever watched on TV was highlights of the 1987 American bowl at (the old) wembley stadium which was the Broncos vs...I forget to be honest!! (Dallas maybe?)
Anyway the announcers kept going on about this guy called John Elway and how great he was. That was the first season I started watching - up untill that point everybody else at school had been mad about the sport (there was a craze for the NFL in the late 80s that died out almost as quickly as it started..) but I had been sniffy about it. Finally curiousity got the better of me and I watched it just to see what all the fuss was about... ...after a few short weeks I was hooked, and i kept noticing that this guy Elway was always running around, making plays and popping up on the highlights all the time. Without even realising it I found myself wondering how the Elway guy had got on each week....untill I realised that even through the strike games that year when he wasn't playing I was still checking out how his team was doing and rooting for them. By the time the playoffs came I was well and truly hooked. I remember that the loss to the redskins in the superbowl that season hurt just as bad as England losing to Argentina in the world cup two summers previously. I went upstairs at 3 am wondering if I had backed the wrong team and if it wasn't too late to pull out and change allegiance to someone more likely to win. Thumbing through my book on american football with a breakdown of each team, I realised the futility of th exercise. I could no more change alliegence than I could change my surname - I was Broncos for life whether I liked it or not.... It was exactly 10 years and one further humiliating superbowl loss later that I finally got my just desserts for my Broncos devotion..... |

Well I used to live in Omaha, so my choices were basically the Vikings, Chiefs and Broncos. My dad liked the Chiefs, so natural rivalry kept me from rooting for them, and for some reason me and the Vikings never clicked. My older brother was a Broncos fan, and I really liked the orange and blue uniforms, so that is where it all started.

I was a LA Rams fan, loved the fearsome foursome and Roman Gabriel. Then in 1970 the Broncos played a pre season game in SLC. My mom took me and I fell in love with Floyd Little. The fearsome foursome were breaking up, but Gabriel and Olson were still there. Still I enjoyed watching Little and there was something about the Broncos that was exciting....and hopeful. Pretty soon I was diehard. And then the ultimate of rewards.....John Elway. Thank God I became a Bronco fan.

Dad grew up a Cowboys fan but when I was real young he was going to law school in Colorado and cheered for the Broncos. I looked up to him, so of course I rooted for them too. He now cheers for teams with players he likes but I will always live and die with the Broncos.
Mom still has pictures of me as a kid crying after the SB losses in my Elway uniform. I had the helmet, pads, eye black and everything. She always tells me how she had a helluva time finding that little uniform during Christmas. Finally found one in CA. Anybody else have that uni as a kid? |

After moving to Denver in 77 the whole town was in complete and utter Broncomaia. It was absurd honestly...
We had a DL and LB crew even Slappy would approve of. Right up there with the best of all time. I had come from N. Iowa which is why I still follow the Hornheads, but I haven't visited their site for ages or even have it thumbed. I can't say that I didn't jump on the bandwagon, I was going thru the tribulations of a freshman in a rich boy's school. I guess I became a real die hard after the NFL slugfest on Monday night against the defending champ Bears. The game was Ali vs. Frazier on the gridiron. I don't mind bandwagoners, I never lost faith even when Reeves tried to run Elway out on a rail and fired Shanahan. Those were dark days. Reeves pulled his own lever to the gallows by drafting a boy in Maddox who wasn't even close to ready in the NFL just to posture. We all know who won that power struggle. If Denver could assemble even close to the DL of Da 80's Bears, or the Purple People Eaters this team would be poised for a SB run. It was nice to almost fluke into the SB a couple years ago, but it wasn't a championship team whatsoever. Anyway, lots of great memories and God willing, many more to come. Too many people hare are drama queens when the team has made several moves, especially on offense last year. I won't go into the draft, wrong thread, but I'm sure the D will come back to Denver very soon but maybe not this year yet. In parting, why isn't everyone a Bronco fan? I have some roots 30 years deep so don't tell anything about bandwagon. |

I was born in Baltimore and became a Colts fan during the Unitas years as a very young kid. No, Joe Montana is not better than Unitas. When I moved to Colorado in 1971, I came as a Colts fan but was incredibly impressed by the Bronco fans support for a team who had never had a winning record. One day not long after our arrival, my next door neighbor told me that I was only a Colts fan because they were winning football team. This wasn't true but it made me take a closer look at Denver and their AFL history. Unitas was traded in 72 and I became a Floyd Little fan - along with other Broncos and I was hooked. Stanford/Jim Plunkett had been my favorite college team, so when they hired John Ralston, I was fully on board. I did get to experience the half a loaf game with Saban before Ralston came along - that further endeared me to the Bronco fans because they let Saban have it.
Ralston in very quick fashion brought some significant talent onto the Broncos and you could really see something take shape. 1977 was absolutely a magical year even beyond the Superbowl wins because this team had come so far in such a short period of time. That year was really the key to changing the expectations in Denver. As time has passed so has the very nature of Bronco fans. I do not mean to insult present Denver fans, but those fans who endured so much for so long loved their team like no other fans I have ever seen. I grew up in Baltimore during some very prosperous Colt teams and Baltimore fans could not begin to measure up. I bought with paper route money, on game day, face value tickets to an AFC championship game between Baltimore and the Oakland Raiders. Do you think that would be possible in Denver in 1970-71. No Way. |

I'm still amused how they let Deacon Jones biatch slap linemen into concussions and the refs just watched. That was a great DL tho.
