Patrick Willis LB Willis (6-1, 237 pounds) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.37 and 4.38. He also had a 4.37 short shuttle and 7.10 three-cone drill. He stood on his numbers from the Combine for the rest.

Oh man ... #21 will be long after he's popped his champagne. I would trade Al Wilson for him straight up right now ... I'd thrown in a pick too.

I was writing a big long post on why we were going to draft him too.

I'm glad for the kid. But, he's not that fast. Must have had a hell of a track coaching. Good thing is that he really fits a 3-4, and NE won't get near him.

Well he's a top 5 pick with those numbers. You can anchor a defense for years around that kind of player.

eh...not top 5. Top 15 I'd say, but not top 5.

Those numbers are crazy-fast, but even if he's a full tenth slower than that, he's still incredibly fast for a LB (makes me think of the article on steroids again). I'll split the difference and suggest he's a top 10 pick at this point.

Seriously, he didn't look that fast playing. Though in 2005 he played through foot and ankle pains.

The last three defensive players I liked as much as Patrick Willis were Brian Urlacher, Ed Reed and Tommie Harris.

No, I can't take credit for this. I've just watched his stock rise and he's shooting up the board. Consider also that there aren't any linebackers in this draft or free agency which makes a prospect like this more valuable because of the positions scarcity.
-Slap- was turned on to Willis before any of this, though I admit that made me pay more attention. Since that time I've followed him closely and it's pretty clear to me that this is someone that will be a star in the league and be one of the best at his position for some time. He has all the measurables, he makes plays and he's a good guy. That's the full package. |

He is doing everything right and he is a great physical specimen. He is a beast in the run game, but I still have memories of him being worked over in coverage from Mobile by average college players at TE and RB. I know everyone loves a prototypical MLB, but the NFL still passes on over 55% of its downs and Nickel coverages have kept LB's like DJ Williams off the field alot.
That said, he is an awesome talent that should be a top 10 selection, but will probably go between 10-15. Slap was dead on right about the football instincts and athletic ability this kid has. Coverage is the hardest part for NFL LB's to adjust, but this kid seems to have a sharp easy learning curve and could work through it quicker than most. |

I told my brother before last year's draft that AJ Hawk wasn't nearly as special as everyone thought and that Patrick Willis was a similar talent.
Patrick, thanks for proving me not only right, but to have undersold your talents. Now just don't play in the AFC, thanks. |

I just noticed the other day that there's at least 25 players that are a *lock* to go in the Top 15 this year. Each Pro Day wonder that arises just pushes more into that category. I've heard a lot of people saying we'd be stuck with a 1 dimensional DE at 21 but I just don't see it happening. With all the Top 15 Talent this year, there's almost a lock for a top DE, DT, or S to fall to us.

I remember you singing the praises of Ed Reed and Tommie Harris but I don't remember you mentioning Uriacher. Doesn't mean you didn't I just don't remember it.

Ah, well, I've been wrong about my share, too. I sure thought Antrel Rolle would be a better NFL player by now. Maybe the light will click on this year. |

Now let's be contructive - approach this like a business problem: 1) How far do we need to move up to get him, and,I'd swap our first-round pick and Al Wilson or Ian Gold .... any better ideas? |

We were sitting @ 10 and we knew the Bears loved Urlacher @ 9.
We could have easily leapfrogged them by making a trade with AZ @ 7. Instead we traded down to 15 and took Deltha O'Neal. We also would up with Ian Gold and Kennoy "Death to flying things" Kennedy. |

Werenīt there questions about Urlacherīs position when he came out? I remember reading that he was a bit of a MLB/S Tweener ... and I was horrified we were gonna pick Travis Taylor at 10 that year. Anyone remember what we got from Baltimore that year?

Looks like Pat Willis could be like AJ Hawk from last year.
