The Broncos have not given up on the idea of having Dan Wilkinson clogging the middle of their defensive front. The Broncos and Miami Dolphins have agreed to extend Wilkinson's reporting date with Denver, keeping alive the trade the teams made March 3, an NFL source confirmed. Today was the original reporting date for Wilkinson to show up and take a physical, as written into the trade. If the deal is voided, Wilkinson's rights go back to the Dolphins and the Broncos get back the sixth-round pick they agreed to send the Dolphins for the April 28-29 draft. The teams can agree to extend Wilkinson's reporting date as long as they wish. The ultimate deadline, though, must precede the draft because both teams need to know the status of the pick. The extension seems to indicate Denver intends to have the 340-pound Wilkinson, who turned 34 on Tuesday, in the middle of its defense. Wilkinson fits the system of Jim Bates, Denver's new assistant head coach in charge of defense. Bates likes to have big, quick defensive tackles. The Broncos seem confident Wilkinson will decide to play for them. Last year, when Wilkinson went from the Detroit Lions to Miami, he didn't report to the Dolphins until several weeks after agreeing to terms. Wilkinson, a former No. 1 overall pick, has been reluctant to attend offseason workout programs. Denver's offseason conditioning program begins April 2. While waiting on Wilkinson, the Broncos brought in defensive tackles Alfonso Boone and Ian Scott for visits. Scott is in talks with Minnesota, Chicago, Atlanta and Kansas City. Boone is talking to Kansas City and Chicago in addition to Denver. According to Burger Bill we're not even negotiating with Scott. That's sure to piss off a few fans on here. |

Well if he is visiting, then I'm guessing there will be negotiating.

Why don't we just get down on our hands and knees and beg like a pauper with a tin cup? What's up with this crap? This guy's a 10-15 play per game rotational cog, maybe on the goal line...nothing more. We're treating his sorry arse like he's Merlin Olson, Mean Joe Green and Randy White rolled into one. I don't care if he shows or not...in fact I prefer that 6th rounder back instead.

Ofcourse we're not going after Scott.
Let's go after the 34 year old, fat DT who's offseason conditioning program so far has been one of chilling out on a cruise contemplating retirement and is coming off a season where he hardly played. Screw Scott. He only started on a SuperBowl defense and is a good young run stuffer. Rewind back a few years and we had a similar system here with fatbody DTs that eat up space in Chester McGloughton and then we changed to a Tampa Bay type DL with fast aggressive DL when Coyer was in charge. Now it's back to big, overweight DTs. The more things change the more Denver's DL sucks. |

I agree as well...we're wasting time with this guy and it's about time to turn the page on him.

There's a hell of a difference between Brown and Wilkinson. One's a lazy **** and the other's just injury prone. Certainly not CB's fault just the way he's built.

The one good thing about this is that at least it tells us Shanny knows the defensive line needs some attention, and if this dude wimps out and we lose out in the free agency competition for Boone or Scott, maybe we'll actually draft some beef in the D-line in order to try and fix the problem this time around instead of another punt returner.

That said, they are still bringing in old retreads as stop-gap measures with the Cleveland crew the notable exceptions. Are they really that bad in selecting younger defensive talent? Or scared? |

Flail, piss and moan about the guy all you want to. Bottom line is the guy in charge thinks it worth taking the shot. So I guess it's his call. |

Watching Gilbert Brown breathe in SB32 made me love fat guys in the middle.....playing for the other team that is.
I just can't see Wilkinson coming in and playing more then 8 decent snaps at Mile High. |

Amen. It's a shame Shanny didn't hire some of our resident whiners instead of a guy with a proven track record of success. We'd be top 5 in no time!

I hope Mr. Bates gets this man a protege. Depth at the DL would be a very nice change of pace. |

Maybe he will yet...isn't he running out of DC's he can bring in here? How many have we had? I remember Robinson, Ray Rhodes, Coyer and now Bates just since the Superbowl years...am I missing anyone? That's one every 2 1/2 years...any idea who the next one will be after Bates leaves in 2009?

I'm absolutely certain Bates will get some production out of retreads and castoffs, hey he's a good motivator. But no scheme is going to change things unless we spend big resources towards the DL over a number of years. FA and Draft. Wilkinson is just another in a long, long, tired line of one year fixes. Oh well, there's always the possibility that he might retire. ![]() |

In order for Denver to sign any DL, they must be traded to Cleveland first.
