Default Broncos possibly without Smith

Wow, I can't believe Broncos without Smith. not sure why Smith would not restructure his contract though, he has always done that and helped the team. These talks have been going on for a while now... Is he thinking retirement too considering the surgery he just had?

Smith update

The Broncos and the agents for wide receiver Rod Smith have decided to table talks on restructuring the contract of the longtime star. Smith had a bonus due today, but it has been pushed back later in the month.

A deal is expected, but if it doesn't work out, Smith could eventually be released. Smith, who will be 37 in May, recently had hip surgery but is expected to be ready for training camp.

My guess is that the delay is to determine exactly what cap space Denver needs to use to complete their offseason plan. If they don't need to retructure, they keep his high cap this year rather than push it out into future years.

Rod isn't going anywhere. He's one of the best players we have.

I surely hope so. I thought the plan was that he would even come to coaching with the Broncos in some fashion after he retires. I would never imagine him getting released.

It has to be more than a re-structure - has to be a major cut. #3 WR's don't get $5.5 MM.

Can he be paid as a player\coach and have it count less against the cap...ala Spencer?

I want Rod to be associated with this team.

He exemplifies what a Bronco should be.

Maybe they are waiting to see how his recovery goes until they determine how big of a cut or restructure they need to do.

He is not going anywhere.

He WAS...the reason he always restructured was because we kept pushing money into a guaranteed bonus. This year is different. It's not a restructure, it's got to be a rework...again...it's just business. He needs to listen to the music or will be out the door in bad terms.

Denver will be running alot of two TE sets, and Marshall is now a vet, plus Hixon is hopefully healed. He just had hip surgury? Why didn't he in January? You honestly expect him back full strength by camp? Now he knows the book back and forth and could wait till preseason, but the idea he can work in the offseason is ludicrous. He's been a warrior but he's not even close to a #1 now.

Marshall is going to be a stud, but we must keep in mind what happens a lot to WRs in their second year. A ton of WRs have slumped in their second year. I pray this isn't the case with Marshall, but if so, I would rather have Rod around to step in then say Kircus.

It's a business first and he knows this is his last contract, so he wants to get paid now

see...Joe Montana...Jerry Rice...Tony Dorsett...just to name a few

I am just curious why nobody is high on Kircus. I personally think that guy produces when called upon, but with Hixon we don't know what we get as he was mostly injured last year. Plus they are planning to use him more as a kick returner, and I am sure they wouldn't want to get him tired, with Special Teams as one of the areas we need to improve a lot...

We can wax poetic but we have to have bumps on our head bouncing off the cap. I can't believe what they got done. Look...his cap # is 8.5...how much of that is deferred SB but Denver won't just push it back this time.

I predicted this. Maybe this time Rod should actually be concerned his name won't be there on the locker.

There are some good wide recievers in the draft. I think it comes down to is Rod going to be third WR or fourth WR. This might depend on the hip surgery as well as what players might fall into the Broncos lap. Rod might have decided to retire but is not doing that now because the team doesn't want to announce that it might be looking for a WR. There are no end of variables to this but I hope Rod stays one more season.

What's evident when we hear moves of getting rid of the likes of Wilson via trade and perhaps releasing Rod is a lot of fans who respect what they've done and are and will always remain huge fans of theirs because what excitement and leadership they've brought to the franchise.

The fact is Rod Smith is 37 and having surgery. He's making a ton of money and there's no reason why he needs to be paid that much. Rod's leadership and what he brings to the locker room cannot have a dollar amount placed on them, but his play on the field can, and after witnessing the wall he hit last year at 500 MPH, he's just not worth 5.5 million in base salary this season.

Rod Smith is the epitome of a winner, conssumate pro and as a Broncos fan I have enjoyed watching him play. I will always be thankful for what Rod has done on the field and off the field. He's the definition of an all-time great. But the NFL is a business, and if the Broncos brass feels that Rod doesn't have what it takes to compete at a high level, or that his price is too much to pay then releasing him may be their only option.

A re-structure is not needed, a pay cut is needed.

I'll always love Rod, always be a fan - but the NFL is a business. **** happens, and he has to be released to save money then so be it. Rod's always been a team guy and I think he's quite aware of the situation. The fact is, Denver's looking to get younger on offense and they're trying to build an offense around Cutler that cannot be stopped.

Unfortunately, Rod is about 10 years older than we'd like and I'm not sure how he fits into those plans.

Nail on the head Req...I had a pang of sorrow for the good old days, honestly I did...but time has to march on. It doesn't matter if Bill Gates owned the team, there is still a cap.

It says nothing on there as to WHY they "postponed" talks. He just got out of surgery. Maybe a little respectful time during his recovery was needed and they will pick things up afterwards. Honestly, I don't think I'd be wanting to talk business the same week I just went through surgery!

Here's the question though, if the rumors of us trading bly & wilson are true & we end up with a top 10 pick & we lose Rod, does that change the pick? Do we go with the obvious DT? Do we pick Calvin Johnson? Do we still get Adrian Peterson anyways? I hope the rumor about us trading up in the draft gets resolved soon.

We need Rod, but it sounds like his injury might be part of the hold up. He's never missed an off season training day and now he's going to miss the entire program? That sounds a little dicey to me. My guess is they are putting off his restructure until they determine exactly how bad this injury is. Perhaps if its too bad they will cut him.

I hope not. It will be a sad, sad day in Bronco land when Rod retires.

I disagree...Rod has earned all that money. And I am disappointed that the FO is trying to push him out.
