Default Scott O'Brien Discusses Special Teams

Here's a video of new ST Coordinator Scott O'Brien explaining his philosophies and plans for the Broncos.

http://www.denverbroncos.com/page.php?id=609

Some things that stood out to me were...
  • Likes Hixon. Thinks that he's a good prospect that he wants to work with.
  • Says that his scheme is about getting certain body types in positions where they fit what you want to do. He talked about body type a lot.
  • First thing he did was evaluate everybody physically as players so he knows that they can physically do what he'll need them to do.
  • Feels very comfortable with Shanahan.
  • Expressed a need for "penetrators".
  • Talked about how part of your scheme is dealing with what other teams send against you.
  • Likes Quincy Morgan's aggressiveness. Thinks Clark still has some potential.
  • Spoke about Mason Crosby where he's a good prospect but inconsistent.

The most interesting thing was when he explained how Shanahan asked him to grade out players. He says that he goes through every prospect and grades them out against our current starters and turns that in to him and Sundquist. I thought it interesting that they aren't just being graded on just their strong and weak points but how those points directly compare to our current roster. Pretty interesting.

I'll post the Bates one when it goes up.

Hopefully we see some improvement on the STs this year thanks to him. I think he's got the right mindset, we need phsyically capable guys that can be coached into the right roles. I wish we had a half dozen early second day picks to add capable STers with, we could use 'em all.

This is the kind of detail oriented coaching that needs to happen on Special teams. People take this part of football for granted.

Who was the Special Teams coach when Terrell Davis came along? Anybody?

A better punter might also be useful.

Anyone hear if Hixon is completely healed and running? Well, I guess I read he had the screws removed so those holes have to fill in. Foot bones are so darn tiny..man was not meant to walk on two legs, yet alone play football! I just keep having the Willies nightmare. Let him completely heal. It's still just march.

This has been a surprisingly profitable offseason in Ferengi language. Hopefully we are cracking the noodles over the draft now. We can deal with cast offs later.
