DENVER -- The Broncos have heard Dre' Bly is bitter about being traded to Denver, and that he'd prefer to play for Washington. The team, though, wants to give their new cornerback some time to warm up to the deal. It's only been a few days since the 29-year-old Bly was acquired from Detroit -- along with a sixth-round pick -- for running back Tatum Bell, offensive lineman George Foster and a fifth-round pick. "Hopefully he'll see the light," said Jim Bates, assistant head coach in charge of defense, at a Tuesday get-together for the Broncos' new coaches. "He'll see the opportunity in Denver of being part of a great football team, great organization and being opposite the side of Champ Bailey. Hopefully he'll come around and say, 'Hey, this is where I want to be." Bates hasn't spoken to Bly personally, but said others, including coach Mike Shanahan and general manager Ted Sundquist, have contacted him. Bly's agent, Kennard McGuire, didn't return a call or an e-mail from the Associated Press. "I don't know what Dre's thinking," Bates said. "Hopefully, over the next couple weeks, he'll come our direction and be positive. We want a positive player once we get in here." The Washington Post, citing people it did not name, reported Bly would rather play for the Redskins because they're closer to his home in Chesapeake, Va. However, Denver doesn't have any plans to deal their newly acquired defensive back just yet. "We expect him to be playing corner for us," said Bates, who was out of football last season, but spent the 2005 season as Green Bay's defensive coordinator. "We'd love for him to be all fired up and get ready to roll. Sometimes, especially in today's game, you have to have a little patience and it takes a little time." The thought of Bly and Bailey holding down the corners for the Broncos brings a smile to the face of Bates. The Broncos can apply more pressure because they don't have to worry about either Pro Bowl player needing extra help. Bates has already studied film of Bailey from last season and was amazed at the footage. Bailey tied for the league lead in interceptions with 10 and finished second in the Defensive Player of the Year voting. "I've been fortunate to be around some great corners," Bates said. "I don't think anyone has been more complete from what I've seen on tape than Champ. A lot of these guys were great cover guys, maybe a little inconsistent in the tackling area. Champ does it all, and does it all at a high level." Denver's Domonique Foxworth was penciled in as the starting right corner until the Bly deal. Foxworth will likely fill the nickel role. The Broncos are still trying to recover from the loss of cornerback Darrent Williams, who was killed in a drive-by shooting on New Year's Day. The case remains unsolved. Bly has 33 career interceptions, the fourth-most in the league since 1999. He's returned five interceptions for touchdowns in his career. Now if the Broncos could only get him to warm up to the deal. "We've heard some of his remarks since the trade's been made, but hopefully he'll see the light as far as playing opposite Champ Bailey," Bates said. "I think it would be a great opportunity for him." |

Doesn't sound like Bly is talking too much to the Broncos. Or maybe he is, but it's through his agent. If Bly is on a one year deal, sure he wants more. Like a Nate Clements type deal.
Ted will have to do a lot of talking and charming apparently to get Bly to agree to a short term deal, but it would be nice if Ted could do that. Maybe Bly reads this stuff and tells his agent to make it work, who knows? I'd like to see this deal work out a lot more than I'd like to see Graham here. |

Why in the **** did Bly sign with Detroit when Chesapeake,VA is so God damn dear to his heart? It's not as if VA is a hour drive away from Detroit or anything.
Stupid son of a b****. I don't care what Bly says, don't trade him. Let that geographically challenged human being rot away in Denver next season making 4.2 million dollars. Oh, the agony. Screw Dre Bly. |

If Denver can talk the Skins into trading the #6 and some impact player(not named Portis or Springs) for #21 and our second third rounder, I'm for it.

I am curious as to whether or not Dre Bly's pro-bowl status is akin to Deltha O'Neal's pro-bowl status. Lots of big time plays interspersed by even more big time bad plays.

Agreed. Bly will be missing an opportunity if he forces another trade. If he does, his value would take a hit. |

The Washington Post, citing people it did not name, reported Bly would rather play for the Redskins because they're closer to his home in Chesapeake, Va. Funny "people" have jumped to the conclusion this is something Bly has even said. Sounds like pure speculation is being passed off as the truth and only but the truth. God I'm sick of the media. |

This is all about money. Bly went to Detroit because of money. Bly wants to go to Washington because of money.

Exactly. I'm sure bly's agent released the being close to home BS to facilitate a deal to Wash, which would've been good for Bly and the agent in regards to getting paid.

He saw Clement's contract. His agent is poking him with a stick to get a new payday.

I've had enough of cry Bly already, let him sit for all I care. I just dont want to give up draft picks and keep what we have to load up on D-lineman and Safety or whatever else the FO has plans for. Since there's alot of depth this year on the def. line...lets keep our picks.

I haven't heard a single word out of Bly himself yet. All I've heard is rumours and speculation, which is why I'm giving this whole "Bly is unhappy thing" no attention.

As much as I would love two Pro Bowl corners on the Broncos, I want someone who actually wants to PLAY for the team. It's time to pillage the Redskins again...

With Cutler - we'll only need half the defense we have now. Just trade'em all!

I think there is truth to rumor because Bates seems to think its true and he has talked to Pat and Shanny who have talked to Bly. I was thinking the same way you were until Bates started commenting on it.

Not so sure I would want to extend contract on Bly too much. He's good but not a stud, and he's no spring chicken, and doesn't have a great attitude (Champs has all of them). But screw the idea of giving up a 1st 2nd and 3rd and Wilson for #6. I want to keep our #1 and #2 for DL picks. I'd send Bly to them for their 2nd this year and 3rd next year. Having #21 overall and two 2nd round picks, we could get some serious DL to plug in there. Save that 2nd next year for a safety.
