Default Were Broncos too cheap not signing Kerney?

Some people were saying that the Broncos were not going to sign Kerney because they were being cheap.

Now that Kerney signed his contract with Seattle, do you think the Broncos were too cheap?

Would the Broncos have stayed under the cap if he got the same deal with Denver?

Finally, do you think Kerney is worth the contract he signed?

I'd like to know what they offered, I thought his deal would be up around $8M per year after what Kelsay got along with Kerney being the best DL on the market.

I also think he's worth what he got, but some of that probably stems from my belief his deal would have been larger.

They were not too cheap...since when did Patrick Kerney become Reggie White?

No. They weren't cheap.

It was a smart move not to break the bank for Kerney. We would then get into cap hell in a few years time.

We'll be better off going DL in the draft. It's a deep class for DL. And we have a good DC in Bates who hopefully is a talent evaluator. We should spend 3 of our day 1 picks on DL. Even if 2 of them work out, we'll be set for several years without sacrificing our cap.

No, Kerney isn't worth what he got. Of course, my sense of worth is not yet adjusted to these inflated numbers...but still.

How many great dominant DL that are under 30 and in their prime hit the FA market? ZERO just doesn't happen.

I don't care...homeboy isn't the missing link to a SB trip. He got over paid...and I am glad we didn't waste the money on him. He would have been nice...but not at 6 mill per year

That's all fine and dandy, but we need a RB first.

I'm with Herc. He wasn't overpayed given the market standards of today. I thought he'd actually get more, and never delluded myself into thinking he was going to be a Bronco, especially once he left Denver.

Kerney's salary of under 7 million is a great deal and honestly taking into account the crazy FA deals this year, you could even say it was a steal for the Seahawks to get him that cheap. Denver probably offered similar dollar sings but less years on the contract. I wouldn't want to keep the guy for more than 5 years, otherwise he'll be 35 years old and how likely is it that he will be a performer at that age, at his position?

his agent said it was neck to neck until the end when he thought he could win a championship in seattle, maybe they sold him on unlimited star bucks

I think it's pretty cool that we ended up forcing Seattle to pay nearly $20million in guarantees to a 30 year DE coming off two average seasons for him.

Wonder how long he lasts there after Seattle realize he's a 7 sack guy at most?

I'll think it's even cooler if this causes the Broncos to ramp up their efforts to land Daniel Graham.

Like most free agent deals, and like the draft, it's too soon to tell. Hindsight will show whether he is worth the money or not.

I am fine that he went to Seattle simply for the reason that he's been hurt lately and just hasn't produced. If we've learned anything over the last several years it should be to stay away from players who can't stay healthy.

Can you imagine the uproar around here if we did sign Kerney and he continued his injured/ineffective routine? Paging Courtney Brown...Courtney Brown to the service desk please.

Also remember that we are early in the off-season. I like the Broncos moves so far and there is a lot of time left. So far, so freaking good, I say.

When are we going to learn that we must stop trying get the quick fixes on the DLine and actually build through the draft? It will save us time, money, and in the long run, we will end up with better players than we could have signed through FA.

Shanahan and co. are weird about the DLine. We have guys like Berry and Hayward who I think were just entering their prime, and they wouldn't pay them. Then you have a guy who will be a scrub in about one or two years and we are going to fork over 6 or 7 million a year and a huge bonus? That doesn't make sense.

Kerney is done and i'm glad he is not a bronco. We need to stop this instant fix theory, sit down, draft, and develop some guys. Do our coaches feel they can't do that successfully?

You think a 30 year old DE with 11 sacks the last two seasons is worth $20 million in guarentees? That is the key figure, by the way, not the average per year. They may get two seasons out of him, and then they'll still have 8 figures of that bonus to account for against the cap. Hell, he appears to already be on the decline given his last two seasons. No thanks. Build the DL throught the draft, that's the only sensible way with guys like Kerney getting that kind of scratch.

I agree with that, and would add that it's cooler if it forces us to go DL in the first round. I think Jarvis Moss or Adam Carriker will have more impact in 2008 than Kerney.

It's like those car auctions on the Speed channel. You go in with a price fixed in your mind for each car you want. If the bidding slows before your price, you throw out a bid. When it goes over what you believe is the top value of the car (and the most you're willing to pay), you move on.

Rep! Kerney proves again, that in the end, it's always about the money. Just glad Denver had since enough the not overpay for him. It will be interesting to see what the Hawks return is on their investment after the season.
