Default Plummer, Cap, Retirement, $$$ ???

Just a question, but an interesting article popped up in the Tampa paper today. It says that There will be $5 mil of money coming back to the team that Jake "retires" under. Now, they are trying to figure out if he retired before or after the trade.

Is this salary cap money?

And, I know this is screwed up Oliver Stone stuff, and is contingent to the answer of the last question but...

Could we have traded him to Tampa expecting him to retire and reclaim $5 mil of cap money Just a question that I have no real answers for since I don't understand the cap at all.

Mess Brewing Between Bucs, QB Plummer

By ROY CUMMINGS The Tampa Tribune
Published: Mar 5, 2007

TAMPA - General Manager Bruce Allen stood behind a lectern in a conference room at One Buc Place on Saturday and casually announced the Bucs had just become the proud owners of quarterback Jake Plummer's rights.

A few hours later, the NFL Players Association was hinting Allen might have spoken a tad too soon.

Claiming that the rights to a retired player cannot be traded, the NFLPA is expected to file a grievance against the trade that brought Plummer from the Broncos to the Bucs early Saturday.

The time the trade was finalized is critical to the matter. If it was finalized after Plummer filed his retirement papers, which reportedly was Friday, then the deal could be voided.

Even more critical, however, might be the roughly $5 million in prorated bonus money Plummer will have to pay back should his retirement, which he officially announced on his Web site Saturday night, stick.

If the deal goes through, there is a chance the Bucs will be in line for that $5 million payback. If it does not go through, the Broncos likely would be owed the money.

Also important are the rights to Plummer. Though he has announced his retirement, he could unretire at any point. The team holding his rights could then trade them.

There has been talk of the Bucs possibly trying to talk Plummer out of retirement in an effort to trade his rights to either the Raiders or the Texans. But Allen insisted Saturday that the Bucs traded for Plummer because they hoped he would play for them and further solidify their quarterback situation. As long as Plummer stays retired, he does not count against the Bucs' salary cap. If he unretires, the Bucs would be hit with his cap figure. That could force the Bucs to cut him or other players, so there is some danger in having Plummer on their roster.

As of now, though, the danger seems minimal.

After his brother and mother hinted strongly at the likelihood that Plummer would retire, he made it official by announcing his intentions on his Web site, jakeplummerfoundation.org, late Saturday.

His statement was titled "A Message From Jake" and read in part, "Football has been awesome to me in many ways. I leave the game with my health and happiness, and look forward to the future. I've got many rivers to cross."

Meanwhile, the Bucs have lots of work to do to shore up the other areas of need and they made some headway in that direction Sunday when they signed Jets free-agent fullback B.J. Askew.

A four-year pro out of Michigan, Askew is considered the quintessential blocking fullback. And while he seldom runs the ball, he is said to be an effective route runner and pass catcher.

Also, the Bucs continue to search for offensive linemen. They have met with and begun negotiations aimed at signing Giants free agent Luke Petitgout, but other teams are courting the left tackle.

The Redskins are said to be interested in Petitgout, who missed the second half of the 2006 season because of a broken leg. He can play either left tackle or guard.

The Bucs also have expressed interest in Cowboys free-agent center Al Johnson, 49ers free-agent center Jeremy Newberry, Vikings free-agent linebacker Napoleon Harris and Falcons free-agent fullback Justin Griffith.

In addition, the Bucs are believed to still have interest in re-signing center/guard Sean Mahan.

We can address this once we figure out the Lelie trade. I know this much, no way does Tampa get on the hook for any of his pro rated signing bonus. Let the lawyers duke it out. I see it that if we was traded then retired, Denver is on the hook for the complete SB, unless there were stipulations as rumored regarding that possibility. I have no clue why we traded him after he nixed the first deal. This is not like Denver to bumble around with something so important regarding cap space. Now it will go to litigation...trust me.

I guess this could end up with the Broncos paying the Bucs $5 million for a seventh round pick?

All the local reports said that it did not matter who held his rights if he retired, that both teams agreed that the Broncos would be the team who could go after the bonus money.

So, even if we are the correct party and we collect the 5 mil, that is money that doesn't count towards the cap I guess it could be used to help with other FA's, or new signees, but I was also interested in cap savings.

Just a question since I don't understand how retirement fits into the picture. I thought we were talking about cut/trade being about equal (dollarwise) for our team, I just didn't figure retirement was going to be his choice.
