FULLBACKS: SAPP gets high tender, KYLE JOHNSON low tender
On Wednesday, Sapp found out he likely will be sticking around the Broncos for at least one more season with a healthy pay raise. The Broncos informed the fullback they were tendering him at the $1.3 million level as a restricted free agent, meaning any team that signs him to an offer sheet will have to give the Broncos a second-round pick as compensation should they decline to match the contract. The second-round compensation is new this year under the revised collective-bargaining agreement. Sapp made about $430,000 last season. The Broncos placed the $850,000 low tender on fullback Kyle Johnson. The Broncos retain the right of first refusal if another team offers Johnson a deal and would receive a fifth-round pick, where Johnson was drafted, if he leaves. Sapp, an undrafted free agent who joined the Broncos' active roster in October 2004, is expected to be the favorite to start next season. He was on that path before getting injured in training camp last season and missed the opener. Sapp rushed for 80 yards on 10 carries and had eight catches and six special-teams tackles in 11 games before he broke the fibula in his left leg while returning a kickoff. Sapp was placed on injured reserve Dec. 4. There's a chance he might get a look at tailback. http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drm...386587,00.html |

He DID but has added some weight for the FB position and has no doubt have to continue rehab. However, that's a great speed for a FB. If he can run under 4.7 he's still quick for a FB.

They have talked about Sapp at RB for awhile now and he rarely plays there, so I don't see that changing next year either. He's gotten bigger since college and likely not as fast. Tony Hunt seems a bigger version of Mike Bell. Would be nice to find a RB with decent size at least, but the ability to break long runs more frequently.

Hmm, Sapp and Johnson are weak?
I disagree. |

Our whole RB situation seems weak to me. Tatum Two Toes isn't an every down back, M. Bell isn't either. Johnson was banged up the whole year and Sapp has never impressed me.

And how do we know that Mike Bell isn't an every down back? We had an anemic offense last year - passing game included so how do we arrive at this conclusion so early?

hmmm..
I like both guys a lot, so I hope they both stick around. Sapp might fill in at RB at times but no way he starts. I still see us drafting a RB high (first day) or go after a FA back. |

This isn't a suprise. Sapp was undrafted, giving him the low tender would result in Denver receiving no compensation if someone signed him away.

i'm glad sapp is going to get a look at HB...he impressed me with quickness and just running people over in the few looks he got last year...always seemed to break the first tackle at the line and keep going. he might be the dark horse....

The Broncos needs a running attack badly. If they don't start upgrading the offensive line another running back is just going to be that...another running back.

Personally I prefer Johnson at fullback when healthy, it will be interesting to see if he can bounce back.

We have a winner. The offensive line that we started at the beginning of the season was not the same offensive line we started at the end of the season. That needs to be addressed. Another RB can't find the gap if there is no gap...
