Default Grade your 1st-3rd round picks

Well since the 3rd round seems to be moving fairly quickly, I figured those of us who were done could start the evaluation phase of the first 3 rounds.

Round 1/Pick 2: Gaines Adams - DE - Clemson

I was kind of in a tough position with this pick. The draft started a little earlier than I had expected, so I was caught off guard there, but that wasn't a big deal. Almost every mock draft I've seen have me picking OT Joe Thomas due to the Lions O-line troubles, however I viewed defensive end as just as big of a need and Gaines Adams is the best DE in this draft. Honestly, I could have moved down a spot or two, but then I would have risked the chance of not getting him, so I went ahead and made him my pick.

Round 2/Pick 34: Tony Ugoh - OT - Arkansas

With this pick, I had tried to trade down into the middle to late 2nd round, but unfortunately it just couldn't get done and I panicked a little and grabbed Ugoh. The Lions deperately need O-line help, and I passed on Thomas to get Gaines Adams. I thought Ugoh was a decent but not great value pick because more than a few sites had him going in the late 1st, even though I could have picked him about 10-15 spots later than this had I been able to work a trade.

Round 3/Pick 66: Eric Wright - CB - UNLV

I think this was my best pick so far. Wright was a USC transfer who had been very consistent as a player despite some off field baggage from early in his career. Wright was a legimate 1st round talent who was overlooked because of the small school and his aforementioned legal troubles. With Dre' Bly going on the trading block, Wright should be able to come in and make an immediate impact for the Lions.

I think your draft has a ton of potential. By far my favorite choice for you is Adams. I think he is just a ball player that gets it done. He is going to be very good for a long time.

I'm up and down on Ugoh. I watched him at Mobile and I just got the feeling that he doesn't have the dominating attitude to be great on the next level. Too much George Foster in him. With that said he does have some good feet with explosive hands. The tools are there... it just must be questioned if the love for the game is as well.

Finally, Wright is another guy who could be a boom or bust type. I think Mediator broke him down nicely. The guy got into some trouble early in his career and appears to have come back around full circle. The skills are great... just hope the character issues don't rear back and bite him in the a$$.

I think if all the guys were on top of their game, each could have easily carried a 1st round grade. The talent is very high with these selections.

Gaines Adams is going to be a good player but I'm not sure he's the best DE in this draft. Jamaal Anderson will be right up there when all is said and done. Based on his size he could easily go off the board prior to Adams.

I think BPC summed up Ugoh perfectly. I think he'll go in the 2nd round but not quite as early as you took him.

Wright could shoot up the boards in the next few months. When it's all said and done it will be interesting to see where he finally falls (I'd say round 2, towards the end). Great pick for you there.

Now, for my guys.

Jamaall Anderson...arguably the best DE in the draft
Daymeion Hughes...arguably the best NFL ready CB in thte draft.
Anotonio Pitiman...Great instincts and a TD clone IMO.

No, I'll do it when I'm done. I would like to give a shout out to Mock for putting on a brave face and pretending he selected his picks purposefully when he really just got embarrassed and grabbed the first name of the same position that popped into his head after totally ignoring what everyone had already taken and having no idea what was going on.

His trading up to select a player that was already picked had to be one of the greatest moments in mock draft history.

Good thing "Arguably the best Defensive end in the draft" was there for his second choice. Wonder why he traded up for the second the best end...

I've stumbled around but it's still excellent. Many have Jamaal rated as high as #4. Daymeion Hughes is regarded as NFL ready and has been an interception machine. Pittman led OSU in playmaking and is alot like TD in vision.

The only thing is that my two second rounders don't have elite speed, but they have football speed and make plays.

Victor Abiamiri DE, ND.
Not to many people like my first pick, not really sure why he fits the 3-4 D that I run. Everything that I read about him says that he is talented but he hasn't put it all together yet. I really believe in the Jets coaching staff. Still most sites have him as a first rounder.

Aaron Ross CB, UT
Now this is my guy. All the makings to be a shutdown DB in the NFL. He might be a little raw right now but plays hard and tackles well. He had a pretty good Senior Bowl week which might help him get into the first round in the real draft. Winner of the Thorpe award for top DB

Zach Miller TE, ASU
He cost me some picks but he adds another weapon for Chad. The WRs for the Jets are solid now we add another guy to open things up for noodle arm. I think he was a major steal where I landed him given the fact that he is either the best TE or the second best TE in the draft (I think he is the best). If he is as good as blocker as they say then he is the perfect TE.

Overall I would say I did well other then maybe reaching in the first a little. I really, really, really wanted Lawrence Timmons but he doesn't fit the 3-4 scheme. Not when I have two good MLBs in there now. Anthony Spencer was another one but as of now he isn't graded as high.

#27 Lawrence Timmons
I was ecstatic with this pick. I had initially told myself to pick up a CB with the first pick but 1. They will probably address it in FA and 2. The players and values just didn't line up and trading up for Darrelle Revis was too expensive when I knew I had quality later in the draft. Timmons is a great football player, somewhat lacking in numbers(sure to be up this week in combines) but is consistently making plays with "football speed" and good instincts.

#50 Justin Harrell
Probably the second biggest need for the Saints, great value in the middle of the second round. Another hard nosed football player. Played through a ruptured bicep tendon against Florida. He has pretty good speed and size and could be combine riser.

#77 Fred Bennett
I was really hoping and counting on David Irons but I'll take another SEC guy. Bennett is not that physical of a corner but he has pretty good speed which will come in handy(ATL and CAR) and very good measurables. He is another guy who will likely be rising up draft boards after combines.

All in all, I've been extremely happy with my picks. I've addressed the three biggest needs and still have plenty of picks left...I'll leave it at that.

AZ Cardinals:

Round 1 - Joe Thomas, OT - I wasn't optimistic he would be available with the 5th pick, but when he was, it was a no brainer. Obviously the best OLineman will fit well into the plans of a team needing major help on their OL.

Round 2 - Brandon Merriweather, S - My ONLY reservation about taking Merriweather is that I view this as a deep S class and belived I could still get a good S in round 3, maybe even 4. But I view him as a potential first round talent, but with some risk. Of the 3, I would say he was the least value, but I'm still happy with the way it has worked out.

Round 3 - Tim Crowder, DE - I don't see Crowder lasting beyond the first half of the second round, and the DL needs help. The starting DE's for the Cards are 31 and 32 years old and need someone to come in and help. I see Crowder as filling a rotaional role in year one and then developing into a starter.

So getting an OL, DL and S the first three rounds fills some major holes - but ther is still work to be done. BTW, it's much easier picking close to the start of each round!

Ditto, and then he comes on here and pimps his "2nd choice players" as "arguably the best ....", I could go on but what's the point?

That's a BRONCOS draft... atleast what I'd like to see from the Broncos! Sub Levi Brown for Thomas and it's atleast possible. Great draft though.

My first day picks were made with one thought in mind: Make Eli successful. Like it or not, he's the future of the franchise. Last season, he lost Amani Toomer in week eight and had a hurt Shockey for the majority of the year. Tiki went above and beyond the call of duty, but even he couldn't do it all. Then, you had the off field stuff with Strahan and the NY press. Then you have Plexico. When his coach requested that he train with Eli during the offseason, Plexico's reply was, "Tell coach he'll see me when camp opens." Of course, after I made my second round pick, I heard that Reese was putting his stamp on the club and had cut Pettigout, Emmons, Arrington and Morton and a couple of days after that, Whitfield retires. All good moves, IMO.

When put in the simplest language, what I think Eli needs on that team is some friends; People to lean on. I think these picks would hold up:

1st Round: Robert Meachem, WR, Tenn - 6’3”, 210
Meachem not only has great skills, he's a great character guy who is willing to go the extra distance to help his team win. He would run routes with Eli in the off season.

2nd Round: Brian Leonard, RB, 6’1”, 240, 4.5
This guy is a multi-faceted player and an intense competitor who fires up the people around him. Another high character pick. He can block, run and catch. He would enhance both Eli and Jacob's games. Also, I forgot to mention, the dude is a homeboy. Get's some of those Rutgers butts in the seats.

3rd Round: Mike Otto, LT, 6’5”, 305
Obviously, the Giants are going to have to rebuild that Oline. This guy is a good start. A four year starter and a real football player and another high character team leader.

I'm pretty happy with the first three rounds.

1 -- Charles Johnson, DE. This guy is moving up the draft boards fast. It would not surprise me to see him in the top ten. A guy who can come in and contribute right away at #15.

2 -- Marcus McCauley, CB. I was thinking about trading back here, but there were a couple of great values available. I was PISSED when Breck Bronc snagged Staley two picks ahead of me. Still, McCauley is a mini-steal in the middle of the 2nd round. I guess a sub-par senior season scared some folks off. No matter. A guy who would defenitely see the field in nickle situations at the very least.

3 -- Ryan Harris, OT. I did trade back in the third round. A lot of the talent I was hoping would fall to me did not, so I picked up a 6th rounder. (Thank you youcan.) Harris is going right about where he should here, and he has some upside. If he develops nicely he could be a starting RT. Maybe even a left tackle, who knows?

Thoughts?

I like your draft JCME...

Your first pick lands a fast-riser, and your last two picks get you two guys with first round talent (but second and third round performances). I was actually considering McCaulley at my first pick...

55. GREG OLSEN

85. LORENZO BOOKER

I really like how mine has gone so far. The two players I've taken can both jack up the power of that Seattle offense (especially Booker, as an early contributor). My other needs can be addressed much later, so I feel comfortable with how things have gone, thus far. If only I had that first rounder...

Carolina is satisfied with their draft so far. First two picks will be more valuable in 2008 than 2007. Still have a couple of needs to fill.

D. Jarrett - big receiver to compliment Smith and replace Meshaun.
D. Stanton - a gamble, but Delhomme's inconsistent play has worn out its welcome.
B. Davis - MLB is the biggest current need. Davis is small, but is a tasmanian devil on the field.

The Chiefs picks through 3.

Darelle Revis- Not a super need, but considering Walls is their #3 and Surtain and Law are up there in age, he'd be a good pick, especially two or three years down the road.

DeMarcus "Tank" Tyler- A need pick and tremendous value near the end of round 2. Tyler would come in and start from day one. Tyler is a guy that I suspect will be gone in the first 40 picks of the draft so I consider it a value pick at a need position.

Doug Free- Another great value pick at a need position. He is recovering from a foot injury and his Sr. year was not as good as his Jr season. If he makes teams feel comfortable about his injury status he will almost certainly be drafted on the first day. All in all I think pick #84 is right about where he should go.
