Default Calvin Runs a 4.33 forty

http://www.footballsfuture.com/news/...433-in-40.html

The guy is 6'4" and weighs 234. I just hope no AFC team gets him.

Probably hand timed, i.e. totally worthless except you know he shouldn't run worse than a mid 4.5 (obvious anyways).

Hand timed 40s are worthless.

I don't see anywhere in that article where it says it was hand timed. How do you jump to that conclusion?

I only imagine what he could have done in a pass friendly offense during college. Some games they didn't even throw to him.

Don't know of any trainers having computerized timing systems at training facilities, or of any pre-combine 40's being anything but hand timed.

Does it mean he won't run a 4.33? No, the rule of thumb with hand timed 40's is a gross overcompensation for a timer's personal bias and itchy trigger finger. But unless it flat out says "professionally implemented mechanical timing" I take it with a monster sized grain of salt.

Maurice Drew ran the best 40 at the combine last year with a 4.39, I could see several guys in this class, including Johnson, beating that.

Trade our draft and get him! Offensive problems? Not anymore! Just chuck it deep to Javon or Johnson!

That's about where the comparisons stop.

As for handheld timing, this isn't the stone age, agents spend tens of thousands of dollars on equipment for their clients and even more on trainers, coaches, etc. Here is a digital timing system:

Or a Reggie Ball-free offense.

Calvin Johnson, preparing for the league's scouting combine in Indianapolis next week, was clocked at 4.33 in the 40. He also recorded an 11-foot standing broad jump and had a vertical leap of 43 inches.
While Johnson might not be the first player chosen, he is clearly separating himself as the top player in the 2007 NFL draft. Johnson is a rare talent. He is 6'-4", 234 pounds, and runs a 4.33 40 yard dash!
His combination of size, speed, hands, intelligence and work ethic are unheard of at the receiver position. Think Randy Moss talent with a Marvin Harrison work ethic. In fact Johnson is actually 25 pounds bigger then Moss and if the 4.33 - 40 is accurate, just as fast.
...and he is just going to gain more weight and get faster before the combines/personal workouts. It will be hard for Al Davis to pass on CJ's numbers and physique when all JR has is an arm with a big body.

With the 2nd overall selection in the 2007 draft, the Detriot Lions select...

This is the worst thing ever for the Lions. Roy Williams is good and that one WR works his ass off but adding CJ would be sick. The only guy I could see that is worth passing on CJ for would be Peterson, and thats if he really is as fast as they say he is.

He has legit 4.4 speed at the very least.

The guy is super explosive for being 6'4 235 pounds.

If he runs a sub 4.4 in the combine he is guaranteed to go top 5. Apparently AD will also run a sub 4.4 also making him a guaranteed top 5.

Johnson is as close to a top 3 lock as anyone in this class already, he doesn't have to do anything.

I have my doubts on a legit 4.33 digitally timed. I can't recall a digital 40 ever being leaked pre-combine, college programs hand time their own preseason 40s. Athletes' Performance (one of the biggest pre-combine training outfits around) was show in an ESPN piece on Puszlosney today, he ran 40s without digital timing set up, and they were working out groups of prospects, when you'd think it'd be worth setting it up.

I'm not saying Johnson can't run a 4.33, I'm personally expecting a 4.35-4.4 flat, he's a freak and he's going to blow the combine up regardless. Just saying that pieces like this shouldn't be taken as unquestioned guarantees as to his speed.
